Hello Brian, Nice job. I just finished restoring one as well about two weeks ago. I delivered it without having the coin instruction decal (I have it now). So I will post a picture after I install the decal. These changers are awesome!! I gotta get one for me. :)

These changers must have at least a hundred screws/bolts holding them together. ???

I'm working on 2 I bought last year at an auction. Both are the older models (no empty window)
I'm getting the chrome redone. I've rebuilt in Photshop & FreeHand both Labels.
One had the Bell Boy label the other had a Clark Candy bar wrapper over the Coke Label...
Which is probably why they didn't go high... couldn't tell
unless your a collector that they where for Coke.

The repro Coke “Button” is off center... So I just scanned and rebuilt them myself and printed them on cream cardstock.

Neat little machines

Eric,
The one I restored was the early version also. It originally had the bellboy card. My client wanted the green coke card. I am looking for one of these for my collection. When I get one can you make me a bellboy card. :)

Post by: Eric on January 19, 2006, 04:28:34 pm
I'll make you and/or anyone either card...
I just print them off on a laser printer on off white card stock. Or save
them on a disc in .pdf format (.pdf I think would be best format.)
Just let me know when.

Eric

Nice, I have an original but would like another for my shop. What's the web address?

Title: Vendo coin changer
Post by: Eric on January 19, 2006, 05:21:05 pm
it's www.soda-signs.com
We're about to revamp this site it's too chopped up (I don't know what I'm doing!)
So I'm gonna have someone who does sites for a living set it up to be more user friendly...
So if you have questions call Erin at that 800#    1.866.910.3000
The new sign isn't on yet...

Thanks
Eric

Thanks guys! Yeah Matt, the paint job is, well......ok. :D The entire cover/door was repainted inside and out, rechromed, new lock, plexiglass and decals/vinyl.

I didn't really have to do anything to the actual mech itself seeing as how it worked ok when I got it. Now all I need is either a pipe stand or a wall mount backing plate for it and I'm done.

We've looked into Pepsi but the License and commentment and guarantee of sales
is just too much for us (It's just me and my brother) that do this....
And we've gotten a license with Roush Racing so we're gonna see how that goes....
This is still just a side thing but would love for it to really boom into something...
But metal is $$$$ and alot of these other sign places making stuff over seas it's hard
to make anything and compete.

Yep, it's a restored Stoner Junior. The pull knob color isn't original and there is no base. but other than that it all correct.

I would get a base for it but I can't see forking out $450 for a reproduction one. That's over $100 more than I paid for the top portion!

I intentionally had my Jr. redone in the original colors. I'm more of a purist when it comes to antique coin-op machines. I didn't want any extra mirrors that weren't original and any additional lettering except for the original "Fresh Candy" embossing on the flip-down cover for the info card which I also duplicated. Basically I wanted this to look as close to how it looked when it rolled off of the assembly line.

I didn't have a choice on the handles. The original bakelite handles were the orange marbled and one of them had a huge chunk missing off of it. I repaired the handle and decided to paint them red.

That and the polishing on the stainless parts are the only things I didn't do myself. I restored/rebulit the vending mech myself.

Talking of Stoners

I have just seen this on Ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws....ck=true

Would like to bid but with tensions in the house at an all time high and the Postal service now getting back into profit with my recent purchases I'll have to pass. But there was someone out there a while ago who was looking for one of these. Just can't remember who it was.

I think the Stoners look nicer with out the separate gum caddies.  I have never seen a totally restored Stoner with the gum caddy intact.  If anyone has such a picture, please post it.  This is my 3rd Stoner project.  It is a 180.  I am doing it without decals.  The candy is actually painted on with pearl white.  It should be complete in a couple of weeks.

ps

As you can see my "hooby" has taken over my office.  Matt Carter asked about the fresh paint fumes.  I almost passed out a couple of times at work today.  In the future, I would not reccommend that you put anything using automotive paint
in you office until at least a week after it has need painted.

My wife thinks I have gone completely mad.

It was me... I'm dying to find a Stoner Jr and a gum wall mount... Will be watching this one.
About a year there was a 8 pull with the gum dispenser still mounted on the side way up North
too far for me.... can't remember what it went for.
Hopefully this will be the year.......Thanks

Eric

To Brian B:

I also think it is important to recognize restoring to the "original" way it was intended.  Unfortunately, the original Stoners were not that attractive.  They did not have the modern paints that we have today.  I have enclosed before and after pictures of my 1955 Stoner Theatre.  I do not like the original wood grain look very much.  They used the wood grain paint so it would fit in with the old style decore used in movie houses in the 40s and 50s.  The original hammertone finish was also popular in the art deco styling of the 40s.  With todays paints, I think candy machines should look bright, shiny, and inviting to children.  I have tried to recreate this with my restorations.  I would like to know what other people think as well.

Brian C

I agree with you 100% on not liking the woodgrain "effect". It's tacky and ugly at the same time.

Your Theatre looks great. My comment about being more of a purist is just my opinion. I never force my ideas of "what is right" on others because that's all it is, my idea.

To me, the fact that you have saved a rare machine and preserved it so it wouldn't meet the same fate as many of it's steely brothers is awesome. Too many of these wonderful machines have gone the way of the dinosaur.

I'd love to get my hands on a Stoner Gum Machine...And a Stoner Coffee Machine......dream a little dream  :D

Post by: Eric on January 31, 2006, 10:59:47 am
It all comes down to personal preference... If and when I come across a Stoner I'll put it back
to an original state... I agree the wood grain would have to go but I'd probably go Hammer Green.
But also I like the all red versions Brian C has done. Just, to me, I don't know if I'd go with all
the decals along the sides and pin striping.
All my soda machines will go “Off the line” look no pin stripes or decaled up. We've had this question
pop up before. I like the look of some machines the way they were, but some, like the newer square tops, when restoring look good with decals... I don't mind decals... heck... I'm in the middle of trying to design some decals for the group... I want something that was... not fantasy...

My 72 has a decal faded on the front along the bottom that I want to rebuild and have made...
I'll snap a image of it and post it... It's a great alternitive to the big 10cent and will
give the all white doors more color.

Brian C your stuff looks awesome and if your selling candy out of them they are
definitely eye catching. And agree you've saved something that may have ended up being
crushed and junked..... Which is still hard for me to believe when I see this stuff... I can't
believe that all people aren't hooked collecting.... This stuff is awesome.
No matter how they are restored.

Eric

Eric and Brian:

Thanks for the kind words.  Candy is always free at my home.  I  take the coin mechs out to avoid potential jamming problems.  The kids love to come over and help themselves.  Last summer, I set up a Vendo 56 (my first restoration project and it shows) can machine and my mint green stoner candy machine outside under my awning and let the nighborhood kids come over and help themselves.  I set coin mech on the 56 for dime.  What a bargain!!!  They both sat outside all summer long.  I hope the kids will remember this and will be able to tell their grandchildren about it some day.  Someone has to keep the torch lit.  I have 4 children and they all love the finished restorations even though I get little or no help with the restoration process.  I admit, I may go a little overboard with the candy machines.  They did not look anything like this when they rolled off the assemble lines more then 50 years ago.  I am much more of a purest on the restorations of my "round tops".

If you have a dime, my back yard Vendo 56 Square top will get you an ice cold can of Pepsi.  All are welcome.
