Title: We-6? what should i do.
Post by: Creighton on January 13, 2006, 07:35:21 pm
Really like this box! Great curves and embossing. No dents and surface rust is just getting started. It will need to sit outside and rainy season is coming. What would be the best way to save the metal until a proper repaint can be done? I'm thinking prep best I can with tools at hand and put a coat of rattle can primer and paint on the exposed side.

Side note it sure looks like a WE-6, but has a Cav tag and the liner is stamped CC-46-8. Weird the Cav tag is installed with flathead screws and looks like another tag may have been mounted as well. What was in the open space on the chrome face plate??

Pic attached Cosmos the dog say's hi :-)
Thanks much!!

Creighton, you could always ship it to me in AZ  :p. We haven't had rain in over 90 days?  Joking aside, other than covering it with a tarp,  your plan seems reasonable....

One rainy season wont hurt it. The cooler is already 40+ years old so I am sure it has been outside for a while.

The top of the chrome face plate had plexigas, so you could watch the water churn. I giess it was supposed to make you thirsty  :D

Is a U-Store-It place out of the question as a temp storage option?

Just thinking out loud, but what about shooting it with a can of WD40 or silicone spray? It'd be a PITA when it comes time to refinish, but with all the work that goes into refinishing, I'd imagine all the oils would be gone by then.

a season out in the weather will not hurt it, but what may hurt it is a location in front of the general public. keep it in a area that will keep prying eyes away from it

I'm thinking the same thing as Josh, looks like it's been outside for a while, one more spring won't hurt (just don't let that dog pee on it though! :p ).

Thanks all!! That sure was fast responses. Think I'll tarp it while it rains and give it some air when possible. Wish storage was an option. 8'x4' goes for $120.00 a month around here. I'll chain it down, but would be surprised if any of the local "employment lacking" have the motivation to haul it off. Bicycles are their target. Good point in that it may bring undue attention. Cosmos will pee on the mailman given a chance but so far has avoided the machines :-)
Thanks all!!
