Title: Westinghouse master water cooler
Post by: 90grad on October 03, 2005, 05:09:18 am
Well, I think the "Josh Factor" kicked in for me, albeit temporarily.  About 4 years ago, a co-worker's father-in-law came across a decent Westinghouse Master water bath cooler.  He's a crotchety guy and figured he could buy his own private island with it.  I heard the stories about how it was worth a couple grand, etc.  Anyway, he never did a thing with the cooler.  My friend and his wife slowly worked on the guy and my friend drove over to my house Saturday and dropped it off, FREE!!

I will post some pictures when I get a chance.  I didn't see any rust, except some surface stuff on the compressor deck.  The paint is dulled, but hasn't rubbed off.  It may clean up nicely.  The lids are rust-free and embossed on the underside.  The agitator motor is there.  The cord is shot, so I didn't hazard plugging it in and electrocuting myself (been trying to avoid that lately).

The only initial question I have is I didn't see a traditional thermostat anywhere.  The machine is complete and there is an enclosed metal box on the compressor deck with some wires going into it.  I thought these may be the relay junction, but there are also wires going to the compressor.  So, I figured the compressor relays were there.  I was wondering how the temperature was regulated.  I guess you don't want an icemaker, so were the stats on these non-adjustable (pre-set)?  Just curious.

I'd have to say that this story beats Josh's recent CS-96...
After all, getting a machine/cooler for free is great but when someone drops it off at your house... That's having your cake and ice cream! And even a glass of milk to wash it down!
Congrats Wayne!

Can you provide a model number off the compressor deck...?

Wow, it seems like some of the "stuff" that Josh has is rubbing off! Nice job!

Thanks, guys.  Josh still has it all over me, as he's got machines waiting for him in cities he hasn't even moved to yet and along the way!  He is amazing and great to work with.  Anyway, delivery was indeed mighty nice.

Jim, I'll try to get you a number off the deck.  It was pretty rusty (surface) down there and I haven't had a lot of "machine time" (home projects this weekend were numerous).  But, I'll definitely fish around for something.

One of these days I'll have to make a day trip to check your machines out.

Jim,

The model number on the compressor deck is L-25-0 (I think).  The data plate was tough to read.  I started to disassemble the machine and pulled off the agitator motor cover and removed the motor (it's seized).  There is a thermostat line of some sort down there, but there is no adjustment knob anywhere on the deck.  I know water can be below 32 degrees and not freeze as long as it's moving, so did these things just have a "pre-set" stat so fools like me couldn't mess with?

You have to love having them delivered for free.  I am a little skeptical though...I have a feeling if it were Josh they would have dropped it off and paid him to take it. :D :D   Congrats on the new free machine.

Great score on the machine!! Thanks for all of the kind words. I do have one great secret to finding machines. I am unemployed so I have plenty of time to look for them.
