Title: Candy machine Post by: on September 07, 2005, 01:48:22 am Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this puppy:
http://tinyurl.com/cq9e9 Seller started bidding at $275 and buy it now for $300, and got no bids. I am almost positive that this machine was designed for the NYC subway system, as it will fit between an I-beam, and I remember seeing them this color when I was a kid. I'd consider making the guy a fair offer on it. Suggestions? Title: Candy machine Post by: BrianB on September 07, 2005, 06:42:44 am That's a neat looking machine. I'm pretty sure that is a generic with a Hershey sign screwed to it, though. For that amount you could score a Stoner (Jr. or 180) for that amount if you keep your eyes peeled. A much more desireable machine. But, to each his own!
Title: Candy machine Post by: davethebirdman on September 07, 2005, 07:54:27 am This is just the sort of thing that I have moved over to. Smaller and easier to post. Already have two for collection in a couple of weeks when I go to the US.
Is there anyone else out there who collects this sort of thing??? Dave Title: Candy machine Post by: sodaworks on September 07, 2005, 10:19:28 am I have two that are similar but they vend laundry supplies. They are on display inside our laundry room. I also have a 1 cent vendor that is longer and slimmer that vends Wrigley's gum.
Title: Candy machine Post by: Eric on September 08, 2005, 09:09:23 pm Yeah wait for a stoner..... Very Cool machines.....
Title: Candy machine Post by: on September 10, 2005, 06:21:54 pm I spent most of highschool waiting for stoners, when the stoners weren't waiting for me.
Thanks, thought it was pricey. Title: Candy machine Post by: Eric on September 10, 2005, 07:03:34 pm Here's an example of a big money candy machine
http://cgi.ebay.com/Early-C....iewItem Eric Sorry to Edit Eric, but the link wasn't working... Is this the correct item...? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6207990055 Title: Candy machine Post by: joesquid on September 11, 2005, 05:22:04 am HOLY COW!! Over $4,000 bidded and reserve not met??? I'm no candy machine afisciando but....wow. A gumball machine that draws more than a near mint Vendo 81?? Did I wake up in Bizzaro-world??
Title: Candy machine Post by: Eric on September 11, 2005, 01:45:23 pm Thanks Jim... Yeah that's it! Ain't that crazy?!?!!

Could someone tell me what it is... and why didn't anyone warn me that buying machines is addictive? Title: Candy machine Post by: BrianB on September 13, 2005, 09:52:26 am Awesome!, you cant beat the price. Looks like it may be a Rowe or a National. Not 100% sure though. That's the thing with most of that era's machine. They all look alike! Looks like it's in pretty good shape too. Is it close to home?
Oh yeah, it's addictive! Don't you remember siging that liability/acknowledgement waiver when you got your account here? Funny, I don't either! Title: Candy machine Post by: Eric on September 13, 2005, 01:51:23 pm Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I need a machine like that!... I've been running ads but nothing yet There was one just like it here in St. Louis but it wasn't complete.... Wanna see more pictures when you get it! addictive oh yeah I'm up to 7 acorn gum machines.... with a total of 11 little candy machines..... can't stop... Still looking for a floor model something like that one you picked up! (A Stoner or Rowe, there's a Rowe on eBay now but it's missing some trim pieces or I'd bid but afraid I won't find the parts it's about the size of a Stoner.) By the way....You STOLE that one ! Great score! Gonna look good by all the soda machines you're gonna end up buying! And look at poor Bob K! He ran a soda ad and got a awesome little candy machine (That he almost PASSED on!) Whew! That was close! Now he's got the fever!!!! Coin-op is great! Eric Title: Candy machine Post by: BrianB on September 13, 2005, 02:47:16 pm The fever..... Yes.....I strated with soda pop machines but couldn't contain myself. Here's a picture of the Stoner Jr. that I restored. It's currently off of it's base and sitting on top of a bookshelf in my family room.

Yep Machines are addictive weather Candy,Soda,Gum,ect, ect. Here a couple picture of my Stoner I had repainted it looks black or purple .But it's really Wild Cherry.Has a few small dents over the last 6-7 years. Also the other one I beleive is made by Rowe The Canteen Is embossed.I found it just before my Father passed away .He worked for Canteen for 30 years.According to him (and watched)All the ones in the Cincinnati area were destoryed at the local scrap yard .So noe else could use them This was the first one he had seen since the early 60s .Has a crapy repaint.(bought that way) missing base +coin mech . The Canteen is very cool..... Eric Title: Candy machine Post by: BrianB on September 14, 2005, 08:45:27 am Neat! I've never actually seen a Canteen candy machine before, just heard about them, very cool.
Title: Candy machine Post by: on September 15, 2005, 09:31:57 am
Yep, it's an hours drive away. Getting it tomorrow. There's some rust on the knobs and in the drawer, but I've got some good chrome paint. No keys, though. Any thoughts on how I should unlock this thing? I really don't need 40-year old candy. Title: Candy machine Post by: Eric on September 15, 2005, 10:03:42 am I'd just drill the lock it out and replace it... I'm sure it's something that can be replaced.
check with Roger at Crowriver.com he may have a lock that will fit. And the knobs (I think are solid turned metal) and will probably just need a good buffing! Yeah wanna see that beauty when you get it! Eric Title: Candy machine Post by: Kilroy on September 15, 2005, 06:56:01 pm
Bet you could get some serious $$ for them on Ebay Title: Candy machine Post by: johnieG on September 15, 2005, 08:04:16 pm
Looks like a National 9-column to me. Title: Candy machine Post by: johnieG on September 15, 2005, 08:09:21 pm here's a National cigarette machine very similar
Title: Candy machine Post by: on September 15, 2005, 09:11:30 pm "Canteen"... "Nicotine"... you say tomato, I say tomahtoh.
Title: Candy machine Post by: dr galaga on September 15, 2005, 09:26:30 pm
I'm afraid to see what you've been listening to in your new juke! Title: Candy machine Post by: on September 19, 2005, 09:08:40 am Yep, it's a National. I love it, I can change the price to $0.75 without changing the coin mechanism- It doesn't return change. As long as no one pulls the lever after putting in a quarter, I'm golden.
Somebody said "machines of this era." What is the era? I remember them (mostly as cigarette machines) from the 60's but they look like they pre-date that. Title: Candy machine Post by: on September 19, 2005, 09:09:27 am
Let's call the whole thing off. Title: Candy machine Post by: Eric on September 19, 2005, 10:52:04 am I bet there's a date somewhere on it... It looks late 50s or early 60s.
Lets get them images on here! Congrats! On the score! Eric Title: Candy machine Post by: sodaworks on September 19, 2005, 02:56:42 pm I have the light up version of the cigarette machine.
Title: Candy machine Post by: davethebirdman on September 25, 2005, 03:47:30 pm Hello Everyone.
My 5c Shipman Gum vendor arrived the other day. Managed to get the lock off it. (No Key) and the vending Mech seems to work well. A little sticky but all there. The machine was used to vend Wrigleys Gum and also LifeSaver tubes. I went to the shop today to get hold of some lifesavers but the tubes are a lot bigger than what the space in the vendor can accomadate. Have lifesavers nearly doubled in size since my machine first began life or do they also sell them in smaller packets.??? Wrigleys five stick packs work just right. I'll have to take a load home with me because our packs in the UK are seven sticks and a fair bit bigger. Cheers Dave Title: Candy machine Post by: dr galaga on September 25, 2005, 04:51:58 pm Make sure you take some pics for us when you get home.
They do make smaller packs of Life Savers, but they are special advertising ones that companies buy a ton of and have their names put on it for trade shows. They used to also sell these smaller packs in bags at stores, but I think they stopped producing those when they started to make the "singles" packages. You might check out the Halloween candy selections - I'll also take a look when I go to the store. About how many Life Savers does it look like should go in a pack for your machine? Title: Candy machine Post by: dr galaga on September 25, 2005, 04:57:50 pm Are the size of the rolls in this picture what you are looking for? This is the size I was thinking about above:
Title: Candy machine Post by: davethebirdman on September 25, 2005, 07:48:51 pm Yep
I think they might be the ones. I did try a substitute earlier but managed to jam the machine because it was just that tadge too large. Had fun getting it out. Dave Ps... Piccie to follow. I have a digital camera here but the PC I'm using doesn't have any software to reduce the size of the picture to post. Title: Candy machine Post by: dr galaga on September 25, 2005, 08:06:54 pm You're on vacation and you can't put the coin-op things down the whole time!
Found this place on-line that has the mini rolls, but you have to buy a 10 pound box! As I said before, I'll check out the Halloween candy when I'm out shopping. Title: Candy machine Post by: davethebirdman on September 26, 2005, 06:58:37 am Thanks for the site. However, she who has to be obeyed has finally put her foot down. That extra 10lb has sent her over the edge especially as I have just bid and won a 1950's payphone which will hopefully be deleivered here in the next few days and needs to be packed and carried home.
I have stored the site away for a raid when I get home and I'm out sight of the evil eye. Title: Candy machine Post by: on September 26, 2005, 08:52:42 am Dave, congrats on finding some very cool stuff over on this side of the pond.
That payphone will look very cool in your game(s)room. Just think of the reaction the "trouble and strife" would have given you if the phone had a booth attached to it! Continue to have fun and please keep adding to your unofficial Yankee blog. Title: Candy machine Post by: on October 01, 2005, 05:31:23 pm
Oh come on, Doc... you just wanted a reason to post a picture of that awesome machine.... and who could blame you. Title: Candy machine Post by: dr galaga on October 01, 2005, 05:50:33 pm
I just came across it just before posting it. I ran an ebay search on something like "mini life savers" and this machine came up. It's kind of different, eh? Oh my, I think I'm turning Canadian, eh? Title: Candy machine Post by: Eric on October 02, 2005, 09:27:30 pm Trew...
Just went to look at a candy machine today.... A National model just like yours though he wants $200 .... But it's sooooo cool I think I may buy it.... Haven't seen anything around here in so long (actually nothing since the Vendo 56 RT) I just don't want to get slap happy and buy the first thing that pops up.... It's in a Barn/Shed... Blue..... and I think calling my name...... I just don't know... $200 firm..... what do you all think? Is it a need!!!??!?! or a fix?!?!?! till something else comes along... Don't know much about these machines...I know Stoners go high... But this is really cool look'n to...Though the knobs are a little rusty (I thought they where just turned solid aluminum... but no... chromed steel.) Any advice as to value?.... Of course it ain't no “under $75 special” like our lucky Trew here... But hey it is a coin-op... Eric Title: Candy machine Post by: Eric on October 04, 2005, 09:10:45 am Trew!
Lets see images of that machine!.... I may have one waiting... It was have buried under church pews in a barn so I really like to know what you think of this model.... He want $200... So I gotta be sure.... Thanks Eric Title: Candy machine Post by: davethebirdman on October 08, 2005, 06:28:12 am Well
I managed to make it home safely. Still on US time, going to bed in the middle of the night and waking up late in the mornings. The kids are grumpy, the wife is grumpy and to top it all I didn't get my promotion at work. What's that saying.... "There's no place like home" Anyway, the good news. My new toys are now in their rightful place. I have eclosed a picture of my gum machine. If you look closely (sorry about quality of picture) you will see that it is missing the coin entry chrome plate. I know a lot of you are gumball/candy fans. Does anyone know where I will be able to buy a replacement piece of trim for it?? I tried Roger at Crowriver but he doesn't have any. My new payphone (which frigtened the life out of your secruity chaps. It was tested for explosives and alsorts) has cleaned up wel. I used a little oil and freed the dials clogs up. The only probem I have is the transmission level is very low. Recieving is fine but talking back is only about 40% at best. Does anyone have any knowledge at all about telephones or can point me in the right direction. Today I put a set of Computer speakers in my Drive In Movie speaker holders and have now rigged it up through my PC and connected the lot to a Seeburg wallbox. I can download anything I like and have an orginal 1950's selector playing music through a PC out onto original Movie speakers. When you can do things like that why worry about work and minor things like feeding the family. Dave Title: Candy machine Post by: loman4ec on October 08, 2005, 08:42:29 am Dave my father knows alot about the old pay phones. I will ask him today. there was a time when we restored about 50 of them. We sent 25 of them off to las vegas and had them gold plated and had the other 25 black powdercoated. they were really cool looking. I was too young to remember how to fix them but I am sure dad will know.
Josh Title: Candy machine Post by: loman4ec on October 08, 2005, 09:36:52 am Ok I spoke with my father. How old is your phone. Can you post a pic. If it is a really old phone it wont work on todays network any way meaning that it has been changed over anyway. But he said that he bought a new board for the phones at a company named Phoneco. They specalize in antique phones. You could change it over with their parts. However there is almost nothing to the works of a telephone. If you can find a rotary phone or even a push button phone that has a swich from touchtone to pulse you can take the phone apart and use its parts from it in your payphone. But also if the only probem is the transmission is low unscrew the mouthpiece and make sure everything in there is Ok. They might have unscrewed it in customs and pinched a wire or something. I hope this might help. I am sorry that I don't know more about this.
Title: Candy machine Post by: sodaworks on October 08, 2005, 11:13:09 am There's a guy here in California that restores old pay phones. he restored ours that is chrome plated and came out of a old casino in Las Vegas. The company's name is "Hello Central" and he's located in San Luis obispo. 805-541-9123
Title: Candy machine Post by: Kilroy on October 08, 2005, 04:32:12 pm Dave, I was really pleased with the service and parts I got from Coinco, enough to send them my payphone for a retro refit. Coinco home page
Title: Candy machine Post by: Eric on October 08, 2005, 10:41:04 pm Dave...
Check with my friend....also named Dave... at oldtimephones.com he has collected for 40 years.... belongs to all the clubs and has restored all my phones and I bought my payphone from him after he restored it.... I'm sure he can help.... Super nice man...... Has an awesome collection...... Eric Title: Candy machine Post by: Eric on November 08, 2005, 02:05:08 pm I just post yesterday that after 4 weeks I didn't get a call on my ad...now
I just got 2 calls for the same model machine that Trew posted... made by National One he wants $25 and the other owner I haven't spoken with yet.... Still hoping for a Stoner to come through we'll see.... Ads = good! Eric Title: Candy machine Post by: Eric on November 09, 2005, 08:41:59 am Well... got home last night with a message on the phone for a candy machine
And Yes... It's a Stoner!..... Now I can't go look at it till next weekend because of the show But they've had it for 25 years, bought it at a sale and has been in their shed since... They've never done anything with it....(hope the shed has a floor...and not a dirt floor) Anyway they really didn't give a price... But having it for 25 years I bet they didn't pay much. So I'm hoping $100 or less... Going to look at a National (Sounds like the model Trew posted here first) tomorrow... $25! Was told it came out of a theatre... Anyway soda machines have dried up but the candy machine ad has gotten three good calls. It says: “Buying old upright mirrored pullknob candy machines, Stoner, National, Rowe and Canteen.” I may run it again since these 3 popped up here at the last week of running. I think I'll run another for old soda bottle machines and chests too. Advertising works! Eric |
