Title: Vendo 39 fan motor. Post by: davethebirdman on September 01, 2005, 02:50:14 pm Hi Guys
I have recently moved my Vendo 39 downstairs and into my new gamesroom. The machine was tempremental before, the top fan would stop and by giving it a little nudge it would start up again, but it had been running no probs for about two months. Now that its in a new place and on display and more importantly required for a BBQ at the weekend its decided to pack up. Now it starts but stops within a short while. I have ordred a new motor from Steve at Funtronics and I'm waiting for it to arrive. I looked at the motor last night and tried to get a screwdriver to it to remove it from its coupling. However, when it had been restored the restorer just sprayed over the whole bloody thing. The screws are ridged and won't budge. Can anyone please suggest a way of releasing them. I appreciate that this may be a simple proceedure but for the uneducated like myself its causing no end of agro. Cheers Dave Title: Vendo 39 fan motor. What exactly do you mean by "ridged"? Are the heads buggered up past the point of a standard screwdriver being able to remove them or are they just covered with paint? If the screw head (flathead I assume) is bad, you have a few choices. Drill out the screw and then re-tap the hole, Attempt to grab onto the remaining head using vice grip pliers or use a screw extractor. Craftsman tools here in the US makes an awesome screw exctractor set that runs about $19 US. If it's just paint, you should be able to use a flathead screwdriver to chip the paint away and clear the head. Here's a picture of the Craftsman Screw Extractor Set: Title: Vendo 39 fan motor. Title: Vendo 39 fan motor. Post by: johnieG on September 01, 2005, 10:53:12 pm I belive he means "rigid" as in frozen in place, seized with paint I assume Dave? This will present a problem, I would probably use a Dremel tool with a carbide burr & carfully take off the head of the screw, as to free the motor/mount, then once it's out of the machine, if you couldn't grab whats left of the screws threaded shaft & remove it with a pair of locking pliers (vise-grips) then I'd be forced to drill & tap a new set of holes next to the originals as closely as possible & use a new set of fasteners (srews) I think they are #8/24 thread , are they slotted heads on top, or "clutch" heads? (looks like a tiny bow-tie see the drawing below,
also once the heads' been removed, sometimes you can get behind the screw from the other side & assist it with a pair of pliers, ( continue to tighten it right through the hole & out the back side Title: Vendo 39 fan motor. Post by: 90grad on September 02, 2005, 05:25:19 am Dave,
If your screw is a phillips head, I've used the Dremel tool to grind a slot in the head so you can use a flathead (slotted)screwdriver. I've also used a chisel and hammer to make such a groove. However, the Dremel is much easier. I then use the flathead bit for the drill, press hard on the drill so the bit won't slip from the groove, and ease it out. My drill is a variable speed, so I tend to pull the trigger in short spurts until the screw gives way. Then, I just back it out. This has worked for 95% of the phillips head screws that have been stuck on my stuff. Title: Vendo 39 fan motor. Post by: davethebirdman on September 02, 2005, 07:42:21 am Hi Chaps
for for the delay in getting back to you. Johnnie you are right. Frozen is what I should have said. Thanks for the tips. As soon as the new motor arrives I'll give it a go. The biggest problem I have is not being able to detach the pipe and take the whole unit away. Am I missing something. I know its possible to undo all the electirical wires but that ridgid pipe looks like its there permenant. Again I appologise for the lack of correct wording. Managed to get the new motor on last night and still running this morning. Ice cold bottles are back again & I'm making the most of it. Pitty the Cricket (bit like Baseball but more skill) isn't going our way. The Aussies are smashing us at the moment. Dave |
