Title: Primer type
Post by: BryanH on April 26, 2005, 05:20:36 pm
Over the weekend I decided to pull the tub out of the frame so I could prime both sides.  It was in great condition but the frame (especially the bottom) was pretty rusty...  I still have some Hammerite Primer left but it's about $12 / qt and is made specially for use on galvanized steel.  Was wondering if there is anything cheaper and or better for regular steel?  Could I use regular car primer?

If it matters (cost / quality of finish), I can use either a spray can or spray gun?

Lastly - once it's primed do I need to paint it to 'seal' the frame or can I leave it with just primer?

Thanks again...

Scrape the crud out with a wide putty knife, then try using a high pressure sprayer to get all the loose stuff out. Sand blast it to kill the rust and then cover with rubberized undercoating. ???

Terry - so no need for primer? Just clean it and seal it with the undrecoating?

Here's a progress shot. The undercoating seems to have grabbed very well. The inside shell is cleaned and sealed tight.  I'm at the point now where I can't delay painting the outside much more...  that and I have a bid on this machines twin brother (another pepsi vmc56 with legs).  If I win that one I'm going to have to wrap this one up pretty fast.
