Title: Tombstone Dispensers
Post by: BrianS on April 21, 2020, 06:45:06 pm
Picked up a pair of tombstone dispensers in 7UP.  Had seen Pepsi and Coke before but not 7UP.  So they have the typical 50 year old soda stains inside the medallion and I am trying to clean them up.  Here is a pic of the first one.  The screenprint image has some damage from age and the staining but it looks better than it did.  So my question to the group is do I keep the original screenprint logo and its "patena" or do I remove the original image and reverse print a decal to put in its place.  It would look almost new, but it wouldn't be original.  Here is how it started and how it looks now.

Just my opinion .I like original as it tells the story of use

In agreement with others, clean and leave it original!
I do not recall ever seeing a Cornelius 7-Up dispenser like this, nice find!

I agree with everyone else, I would leave it as is as you did a great job in cleaning it.

Wow... can't believe I'm going against all.. but I think I would make new logos and make them more age appropriate... that logo is too new and generic, for me..
I think one of those had a more older logo decal with stripes in the background...
Maybe do one with new and the other leave as is.
I was torn on those... (Herman MO) because the logos were too new. but was a good buy. glad I know where they went and that their being cleaned up.

The 7up medallion looks like it was borrowed from a Cornelius compact-50 slider...

I mean it's the same company, so it stands to reason on the design.

Here's an example.

Yes seems one had that striped logo on the back of one.. I think the others were updated/replaced as they don't seem to be age appropriate (logo style wise) for that dispenser.
as far as those medallions are they reversed screen printed?

I'm not sure if they are reversed screen printed as I don't own this one I posted pictures of. I thought it was cool looking and had saved these pictures from somewhere, maybe an auction?

so as usual, I think Johnny hit it spot on.  Notice in the pic posted by Bireleys1 that the plexiglass cover over the 7up logo has no chrome ring around it and no associated holes in the dispenser to attach a ring with.  I think the chrome ring version on my dispensers is exactly the same as the Cornelius 50 badges and may have been a retrofit solution to update the display.  The back of both may dispensers have not chrome ring and the front of both of them do.  Unfortunately, the green stripe version I have is heavily damaged and shows a lot of the adhesive.  It doesn't look good.  Going to try to redo it.  The other one shows the 1943 logo and is in pretty good shape.  Going to keep it original and redo the front side chrome ring version to match.  I am thinking they provided a template to drill holes in the front to add the chrome ring.  The decal in it appears to be some sort of a foil sticker with aluminum backing.  It has adhesive in the front and back side and it a pain in the rear to try to remove.  Looks like it was applied to the plexiglass cover then adhered to the Tombstone as well. If by chance anyone has a 7up decal with the green stripes or a Cornelius 50 cooler chrome ring with an older 7up logo in it, I would be interested.

Also noticed that the other pic posted showed a version with green dispensers.  Mine has black ones.  Would be interested on green versions of anyone has some.

You could maybe make the medallion... get the artwork then pore liquid resin over them. would have to make some type of edging to shape it. those green taps can be $$$...

A quick search on google showed this pic.  The cooler is worth zero, but if anyone might have scavenged this logo off of one, it would match the back of one of my dispensers

Trying to make a replacement logo to put into the oval on the dispenser.  This turned out decent but i need a higher resolution copy of the red and black part of the logo.  When I blow it up the black outline on the letters gets a bit fuzzy.  Anyone have a higher quality version of this logo?

Eric,

Not yet.  Cleaning up the old ones to apply a new decal has proven a challenge.  I have set it off to the side for a bit as we have had a couple Covid related issues in the family.  Still planning to get around to this once we get a bit of normal life back in place.
