Title: Wh master Post by: on April 19, 2005, 01:02:05 pm I recently purchased a WH master that I plan to restore. I have never tried this kind of project before, but am really looking forward to seeing the finished product. My 1st ? is where do I start. It has some rust in the tub, several scratches on the outside. I'm sure the old paint needs to be removed, what is the best way to do this? Sandblast, chemical stripper??? What should I put on the metal after stripping? Thanks in advance for all the advice you all may send my way.
Title: Wh master Post by: BryanH on April 20, 2005, 11:28:56 am Welcome Newtothis - the best way to start would be to read the posts in the Restoration discussion area. I'd suggest you read them all as there are gems in almost every thread but if you want a quick jump start you should check out the info on general approaches and cleaning and painting. If you have specific questions then you can add them (with pics if possible) and the folks here on the boards will most likely be able to provide specific directions and/or experiences.

First and most important, take lots of notes and pictures/video before taking anything apart. Personally, I media blast everything, do all the necessary body work and apply poly primer. Spray on a light guide coat and block sand with 400 grit wet sand. apply primer sealer and top coat. terry Title: Wh master Post by: on April 22, 2005, 11:51:23 am Thanks for your replies. My son and I plan to get started this weekend. I will make sure I take plenty of pictures.
Title: Wh master Post by: on May 08, 2005, 03:59:38 pm I am well on the way to having my WH Master stripped to bare metal. Question #1 Should the metal be treated with something before I apply primer? #2 What is the best way to paint the white embossed letters?
Title: Wh master Post by: BrianB on May 08, 2005, 08:28:58 pm Newtothis, First off, welcome aboard!! Great to have you and hope you stay awhile!
After stripping (Sandblasting/DA Sanding/Chemical) I use a metal wash that not only removes any remaining waxes/residues/nasty stuff, but also protects the bare metal from "flash rust" and does so for up to 3 weeks or so. I purchase it from a company called Eastwood They sell all sorts of neato auto restoration stuff from painting supplies all the way to blast media. The link I provided will take you directly to the Metal Wash. Pretty cool stuff and non-toxic/non-acid based. Hope this helps!
