Title: Glass 12oz. coke,sprite,pepsi
Post by: johnieG on April 15, 2005, 09:38:40 pm
Hey, Hey, a sure sign of spring.. my favorite local ethnic(independant) grocery stores are getting in cases of the 12oz. glass bottles of Pepsi,Coke,Sprite,Squirt & 7up. all up from Texas (Mexican bottlers) all made with real sugar! I'll be stocking up!  anybody else?    :drinking:

couldn't post a picture of the bottles in "Announcements" & thought better of it, & I'll post it here...Jim , if you can delete it from the Announcements posting area, that'd be great!

I'm jealous!  The only thing that I've picked up at a store recently was a 6-pack of the Coke Women's NCAA finals bottles when I was in Indy for the day yesterday!

You're in central Michigan, right?  How far off of US 27 (or is it now US 127) are these stores?  I pass up the middle of the state to go north of the Soo almost every year.  Maybe I'll have to make a detour on my way back down. :p

I'm S.East actually, between Pontiac & Flint,
the stores in Saginaw are near I-75 & M-46
I have a local one here in Flint off of I-69 & I-475

Dr G, Us 27 takes you through the Michigan farmlands, so ethnic grocry stores should be found on your route. I would suggest the Mt Pleasant area (potato land), Jackson,(farmalnd) or if want a really scenic detour, the Traverse Bay area (nw tip of the Michigan mitten),

Hmmmm, I usually stop in the Mt. Pleasant area for gas since it's about half way from the border.  I might have to slow down a little.  The area up north is nice, but I go about 2 hours north of US border along Lake Superior - about 20 minutes north of here: http://www.deepnet.com/~rcurrell/NatureNorth5.html (looks a little cloudy today).  Since 9/11 I get a lot of  :censored: from customs when I cross by myself.  Can't a guy go camping for a week by himself without being a terrorist?  :darn:

Johnie, What's it cost a case up your way?  I had a source in SW Detroit who was giving it to me for 15 bucks a case.  He cannot get it anymore and everyone else wants 25 a case down here.  If its worth it for me, I might make a road trip to stock up for the summer.

$15.00 a case! I wish! the price per case I got from the guy I talked to in the local mexican grocery store was $30.00+deposit, so it works out to $1.25/bottle, which isn't bad , until you start wanting more than two cases...last summer, I could get it for around $24.00/case, the story  I got was that Pepsi especially is trying to crack down on the independants & force them to use the local distributors to get soda from, of course they refuse to carry he glass bottles , only in plastic & with corn-syrup. I'm trying to work out a deal like last year to get a mixed pallet of sodas, it worked out to about $23-24/case, but I got stuck with extra cases when some locall guys I know didn't come through with their end of the deal...

I see your Avatar is the old OrangeCrush logo, you'll love to see this, last year ( haven't seen it yet this year) they had OrangeCrush, in retro style bottles...

I believe it about them getting grief from Pepsico.  It was plentiful down here if you went into the right areas(along Vernor and Clark st.)  Lately it has been a rare sight indeed.  I had a case of that Orange Crush last year it was good stuff.  The Mexi Coke has been tuff to get too.  Whats weird is when I started buying this stuff about 4 years ago all the bottles were 20 years old and showed it, it wasn't uncommon to get Pepsi bottles date 79 or 82.  The last few cases I bought were all brand new bottles.  I wonder if not as much is coming up because they do not get there bottles back.  Johnie if you have an Indian grocer around you stop in and buy some Thumsup or Limca.  Both are made by Coke and usually run about a buck a bottle.  Really cool looking heavy refillable bottles.  The Thumsup is  a Cane sugar Coke knock-off and Limca is kind of a carbonated lemonade type thing that I really like.

I love those "Squirt" bottles with the twisting shape.

I remember those from growing up. I can taste that sour and salty flavor right now, just thinking about it.

Yeah, here in Northern CA, it's pretty easy to find those bottles at the so-called ethnic markets.  It's also the cool thing to sell them at authentic and non-authentic taquerias (places that sell tacos, burritos, tostadas, etc...)   :drinking:

By the way, can't remember if it was shown in the photos above but you can also buy Squirt in a 12oz spiral glass bottle.

And the really cool thing is that if you hold the 7Up bottle up to the light before you start drinking it, you can see all the little things floating around in it!!!!   :suspect:

Citrus-rind, acordingto Mexican law, if you state that you product contains lemons & limes, it must contain lemons & limes, gee what  concept!  You'll see Grapefruit-rind in the squirts too... :;):

Oh fwew! I had no idea what would be in there. I mean, even in Mezcal there is the worm at the bottom of the bottle.
I'll have to look for the rinds sometime. I learned something new today.

Twig's bottling is in Shawano Wisconsin and they sell to the public without any problems they are the easiest to buy from.

Celo Bottling is in Sauk City and will sell to the public sort of he really is getting low on bottles and it is like pulling teeth to get him sell but it can be done.

New London Kist bottling is in New London Wisconsin and they are a hit and miss whether or not you will find them open. But they will sell to the public.

There is also Seymour bottling in Seymour Wisconsin who does bottle in returnables too. I have not been there yet but I was told that they will sell to the public.

All of these bottling companies are with in a 100-150 mile radius of each other and you could easily visit them all in one day.

Way to go Dr_Vend!  if we all support the local bottler's we'll have them around a lot longer to go along with our hobby! I luv 76! & Kist orange!  we lost town-club here in S.E. Michigan a long time ago, & "the Pop stop" up in Saginaw/Flint in the 80's, but now with a new interest in the machines from the 60's (squarecorners) there is a renewed interest in glass-bottled sodas ( I like Jones soda-co. but for the luv of Pete, would it kill them to put the flavor on the stupid caps !!!) I'm hoping & emailing Faygo to run another batch of there little 8oz. glass collectable series, in RedPop, Rock-n-Rye, Grape, Faygo-Cola & Orange this year! ( No Kiwi-Strawberry please!) as always you find all these nice local bottlers, with no way to affordably ship some cases around..( glass=heavy)..

Yeah, those 8 ouncers rocked.  The perfect size for my kids.  Not everyone wants cola's and the glass 12 crush you can buy just isn't that good.  Do the Faygo 16 oz fit through the Vendo's bottle gate's?  I haven't tried yet.  Man, what I wouldn't give for a case of Towne Club, those were the days.

Nope, the bigger 16oz. Faygo bottles are too big in diameter to fit thru the gate, but they'll hang nicely in a slider & do vend OK in my Westinghouse (Select-a-matic) WD102MD, ya know , maybe someday they'll realize that not everbody likes to guzzle a half-gallon of soda in one serving. did it ever occur to them ( the soda companies) that in an era of reduced calorie drinks maybe a smaller portion is something to market, naw ...makes too much sense! oh well, bottoms up!   :drinking:

Yeah, to me a 8 oz Coke is just about perfect as long as it's brainfreeze cold.  Now if they would just make the darn things with sugar instead hfcs.
