Title: Hook Bolts for Vendo 39 Evaporator
Post by: vendo81d on February 25, 2017, 06:12:31 pm
I am re-restoring my Vendo 39 from the first year of production (1949).  When I looked at the evaporator, I saw that the bracket for the fan was attached to the evaporator tubing by three hook bolts.  When I took the nuts off at the end of these bolts, two snapped because they were corroded.  I wanted to replace these parts anyway because they are made of steel and were rusty.  Rod at Fun-Tronics showed me the other day how his son replaced these hook bolts with screws and fender washers that rested on top of the evaporator fins.  I considered doing this also, but then I found another way.  I was at my local Ace Hardware today and I found #6 x 3" stainless steel threaded rod.  I bought three of these and modified them for my machine.  First, I ground the threads off about half of the length.  Then I bent the rod to approximate the shape of the original.  The rod was fairly easy to bend.  I didn't match the original shape exactly, but I got it close enough to work.  I like that the pressure is on the tubing and not on the fins.  Attached is a picture of the original hook bolt (on left) and the three hook bolts I made.

Nice job !
I could spend hours at a well stocked ACE. Great bits hid in the bins.
Thanks!
