I have had this machine apart for sometime, and now I'm getting on it..

I started out with a nice looking non working machine. (see photos)

First thing I did was pull the compressor unit out to see why it was not working. After a lot of fumbling around and getting some outside help, found out it was just wired wrong (whew).

So since the compressor was out and working nicely. I started to do the restoration on it.

Soda blasted the everything I could. I powder coated the base plate in black. Rattle can industrial black the compressor and such. Polished the copper tubes (probably should of clear coated them), and replaced the fan motors with new ones. Rewired everything and added a starter.

Then I pulled the cabinet apart fully, and found it had rust. I was very disappointed, but sorta expected it. It was a nice looking machine to start with, but it was only and outer cosmetic restoration.

Well I know rust is cancer and will only get worse. So I sent it off to get repaired and re-painted.

If your in the SoCal area and need a good painter, I recommend Creations n' Chrome in Santa Clarita. Nice guy and very good. They did an awesome job at matching what I think is the proper Pepsi Blue to my same era cooler. Turned out awesome.

Now I'm waiting for all the internal pieces to get powder coated in a silver hammertone.

My first of many questions: What insulation do I use?

Looks great! I have a few projects laying around unfinished. Some just take time!

But What insulation is best to use? Anybody have experience with this area?

I'd rethink your insulation option..
You have R30 which is great if you have up to 9" openings... non compressed.. as soon as you compress insulation the "R" factor goes down and it's less productive...
so your spending money on something that really won't deliver as your openings between cabinet and shell is only about 3-4 inches..
Youd be fine with a R-19 which will compress a bit yes, but a lot cheaper I'd guess and deliver the same result.

Powder Coating is back. Turned out great! A little darker than I wanted but it will work.

Exchanged the Insulation at Home Depot without a receipt :)

Installed the Insulation and Tub today..

I'm now stuck waiting for the rocker arms to come back from the plater (gold irradiate) now..

Rockers back from plating finally. I still need to drop off next week my pieces that need chroming.

The door is coming along, but finding out the chroming needs to be done before I put the inner door skin back on. Always something that slows everything down :)

I bought the R30 because the packaging was damaged .  They charged me $7 for the whole roll did 3 machines with the same roll.  My last machine the insulating being thicker made it much easier to install the liner.   Didn't have to use any cardboard , or tape dropped right in... 

Got the compressor/condenser unit in today. Not as difficult as I thought. Will have to do 1 small paint touchup on the blue.

Gets nice and cold!

The door seems to be the biggest headache, but it's all getting there.

Yes, one little chip on the bottom lip. I'll get paint from my painter..

I have found using a few strip of blue painters tape helps around the edge when you are installing...

Chrome came back. I'm very happy with it..

Got the door on since the chrome held me up to do so. Next is the small door, but still looking for a lock bar, as I do not have one :(

I'm working on the coin door today. I'm gonna send out the coin mech to get restored next. It fully works but want that new cad plated look.

99.8% done. Just a few items I'm still missing. I'm not sure or ready yet to do a coin mech restore, even though mine does work.
