Title: RT 56 / Cabinet Floor
Post by: Slapshot42 on May 07, 2016, 11:28:48 pm
Before I make one does anyone a cabinet floor for a RT 56?  FunT carries the liner flooring but I don't see a cabinet flooring.  I was surprised because the liner flooring was immaculate with the original drain tube in place .

Thanks!

Jared

That floor looks just like every upright I have ever restored. Why do you need to replace it?

I looked at some fiberglass mat today at Home Depot.  It looks like the first step would be to sandblast to bare metal.  Then from there apply the mat with the resin.  After that it looks like there a few other options.  I'd like to use some seam sealer and some polyurethane spray to try to waterproof the cabinet.

I used fiberglass mat along with POR-15 to patch a small hole in the trunk of my Spitfire.  It worked great and has lasted about 10 years and counting.

I POR15'd the pinholes and then sprayed truck bed liner on my WB-60

Depends upon the quality of restoration that you intend to do. I'd strengthen it with POR15. That should smooth out nicely. Fiberglass...meh

We cut out the old bottom pans and have new ones made at a local sheet metal place..
as far as Labor and time, its' faster and cheaper than trying to spot fix or lay in fiberglass..

As stated, depends on the quality of restoration your looking at doing... I like the bottom of the pan (upper area of the compressor unit) to be just as nice as the rest of the machine.. so just easier to start with new.

If you need one ,I can see if my body guy has an extra... we usually make up 3-4 at time to save on production but I just got done with 3 of them. so not sure if he has the xtra or not?

if anyone else needs one, I can look at making another run.. not sure on cost... probably around 30-40 bucks?

I'm interested .  I'd like to see some pictures and have general awareness how it's done before purchasing. Thanks John!

Here are a couple pics of new pans I put in my machines.  My pans look like they were in worse shape than yours, but I would replace them.  One of those, "You can't really see it, but you know its there" things.  I think I paid a local sheet metal shop $120 for the pair.  If you are putting a chunk on money into a nice restore, I think its worth the added cost.

I ended up drilling out all of the spot welds and using a spaded punch to loosen the cabinet away from the floor pan insert.  There was 31 spot welds on the floor.  Rather than removing the front piece which was perfectly fine the skinny wheel worked great.

If anyone is looking for a floor pan I will be making approximately 3-5.

Two questions:

1) What was the cost to have them done.  Been a while since I needed one.

2) Did you put the 31 spot welds back in  ?

It  was $75 with tax.  That included ( 3 ) pans and they welded the pan in the machine since I took the cabinet with me.  The ( 2 ) extra pans will need to be notched out and the drain whole marked by the cabinet.  I was wanting them a little bit different but for the price I wasn't going to complain. Not hard to lay the pan in the machine and notch them out.
