In certain parts of the US, Pepsi is the "generic" name used for all soda. Just as "Coke" is used as a "generic" name in some parts. I have relatives in the northwest part of Missouri and as a kid visiting them, they would offer me a "Pepsi" using it as a generic term. Pepsi tended to dominate in that area. I am sure there were other areas as well.
