Title: Cola Kerb Sign. Now in its new home.
Post by: davethebirdman on September 24, 2015, 01:59:40 pm
Wow didn't realise how big this sign actually was. Needless to say there was a lot of tutting from Mrs B but after a heave and ho I managed to get it wedged into my garage.

when I get a little time I want to give it a clean and a bit of a polish before trying to get it into my room. There is some white paint splashes on the sign and I was hoping someone could suggest a good way of removing them
without hurting the paint work below.

I 'm also after some trade secrets as to how to clean and shine.. Anyone prepared to share??

Dave

Howdy Dave,
Very nice sign! They are big. First off get a bunch of micro-fibre towels. To get it clean, hot as you can stand soapy water. Hand dishwashing soap. Not dishwasher. Dawn works well. Could use diluted Car Washing detergent as well. Rinse and dry. If all of the worst is off a good spray wipe with Windex.

For the white paint first try laying hot towels on the spots and see if it will come off. Latex paint will. If not the paint is hopefully enamel. Motesnbocker's Graffiti Remover is a great stuff. Just don't leave it on very long. I took 4 coats of paint off a Wayne Model 80 fuel pump and it didn't touch the original paint. If you can't find it ring the streets dept. and see what they use.

To get the last of the oxidation off. See if you can find/order Flitz Polish. Novus #1 will also work. At this point I'd give it another bath. For indoors I would just put a few coats of good car wax on. I like Mequiar's QuickWax spray. You are done.

Yikes, forgot test the Graffiti remover in a small spot just to sure it doesn't hurt the paint.

Anybody have anything to add would like your thoughts.

Great Sign!

Signs are porcelain, easy off oven cleaner or paint stripper, use a plastic scrapper or razor blade, I also use a SOS pad and fine steel wool take your time! It will NOT hurt the porcelain! apply a coat of wax done!

I do this 3-4 times a week on porcelain signs, just take your time

Before he cleans these signs are the green letters "baked" into the porcelain also? Some of these older signs used a water release type letter to make the sign
say whatever they wanted. Kind of like a privilege sign... I've never looked at one of these up close in person so I don't know. Just would want to make sure
so he doesn't damage the lettering as some of the cleaners would peal these letter right off...

Awesome find Dave- congrats on the purchase!

Every one of these I've owned or been around the green letters were always baked on.

Yes but that one time I had all the letters wash off with just bleach . Not the same sign of course those are always porcelain but I am very careful now.

very rare in england........in fact

be surprised if there was another

you need to calm mrs b down dave and

tell her you are going to split the sign in

x2 and reposition on a wall..................

so takes up hardly any space at all then

half the time to clean and polish too.....!

coke and share they kinda go together...

only joking....enjoy it....... even in the rain!
