Title: awesome weekend mission slider and barqs quikold Post by: ld26 on June 14, 2015, 08:43:07 pm spent the whole weekend in the car but I'm very happy to have both of these, I've been working on a deal for the barqs cooler for almost a year and finally got it done, more rough than I had hoped but I think it can be saved, Mission Slider is super clean, gonna clean and polish and leave original, the guy I bought it from got it for $25 !!!, bought it from an older man who was using it to store his gold, ha

I use Simple Green as a general cleaner. It is gentle, safe and biodegradable but works pretty well. For getting rid of old grease, brake cleaner (available at auto parts places) is awesome - it just dissolves the old grease away. I got a combo pack of Simple Green at my local Sams Club but most hardware stores will probably carry it if you don't have a local Sams/Costco/BJs handy. Flitz will remove a lot of the grime from the paint. It is a polishing compound so if you get too crazy with it you can start to remove paint, but it takes a lot to reach that point. If you apply it by hand you shouldn't have any issues at all. I used Flitz with my DA polisher on the 44 and I removed a bit of the red paint from the edges of the embossed area, but I really hit it hard all over and that was the only area in which I had any problems. It seems like most Quikolds are missing these chrome strips.
Title: Re: awesome weekend mission slider and barqs quikold Post by: ld26 on June 15, 2015, 06:25:35 pm Jim - Thanks for the tips! i already have some simple green, i'll give it a shot first than try out the flitz...
Chedki - the chrome strips seem pretty simple, if someone wants to borrow one to use as a template let me know, I don't use them anyway, I like the look of the coolers restored without them... Ed - what is the name of the dipping process you used on your pepsi jr. Eric had a good idea to go that route instead of the traditional sandblasting because of how rough this one is, don't want to make it any worse... Here is the link to the place that I used now for several standards, and I just picked up my 7up 33 that I had dipped and is being painted as I type this. This place is about 3 minutes from where I work...... as an example... 2 weeks ago I brought them 4 complete Quikold standards (2 side panels, front and backs and the base for each X 4, no lids) along with a 7up embossed 33 (cabinet l, door, coin door, back compressor cover and crank plate).... so 4 quikolds and a 33 cost me 500 to get dipped. The way I looked at it was it cost me basically 100 per cooler / machine. The auto body rate where I go is 70 per hr. I know they couldnt do it for less than 100 each item (1.5 hrs on each sanding, stripping etc...) , and the dipping turns the pcs into a BRAND NEW pc of steel. I'll post some pics of them later tonight or tomorrow with my last batch.
