Title: Galvanize metal
Post by: Victor on March 05, 2015, 04:24:25 pm
What is a good chemical solution to take galvanizing coating off metal? (without sand blasting).     I want to remove the Galvanizing to paint.      Thanks, Victor in Michigan

White vinegar worked for me.

I have used muratic acid with great success, but have to do it outside because of the fumes.  There are a number of past discussions on this topic.  Just do a search.

Here is one example:

a solution of muratic acid and water works for me.. but yes outside and don't breath the fumes...

the stronger the mix the faster it works... I use about a gallon in a 5 gallon bucket with water full and it takes anywhere from 20-30 minutes to get the galvanizing off.. then you have to rinse it and sometimes even wipe it down after a few batches as black crud will stick to it..

but dry them right away in the sun or heat gun so they don't flash rust..

I then dust them off in a blast cabinet before we powder coat them. or Paint in your case.

Don't forget your chemical resistant gloves & safety goggles. remember it's acid.
