Title: 7up VMC 88
Post by: BONOVOX on December 08, 2014, 09:51:53 am
Well..... a few years ago I found someone with a 7up VMC 88 machine in very good original condition.  I found it because he had another machine for sale and beside that machine was sitting the 7up 88.
I inquired about the machine, and was told it was not for sale.
About 3 months ago I emailed him again to see if he changed his mind etc.... and he said to shoot him an offer for it.  I gave a SOLID offer for it, (FULL FULL retail) and its hard because there hasn't been a 88 sold that I know of to judge it by.

Well, today I get an email back, saying that it is for sale, and he wants 11k for it!  If I cant meet that price, then don't waste his time with emails I was told.

SO, what do you all think a 7up 88 should sell for?  I think 11k is WAY out of line... but I am interested to see what you all think

       Rare doesn't always mean valuable.    I can't see a 7up 88 being worth any more than a 7up 81.

I was told the last 7up 88 that sold did $7500. I have also not seen any auction results? So who knows?

This is a really tough one Ed because first I know you're dying to own this machine. I wouldn't see why this machine wouldn't be as valuable as a 7up 81. This is a rare rare machine that never comes up for sale at any price. When you offered you said full retail, you just have to ask yourself how big of a gap is that between your offer in his $11,000 asking price. What would bother me more about the whole deal is the email that he sent to you saying if you don't buy it for 11 don't email him back. That would bother me a little.

I pretty much offered what a 7up 81 would sell for in rough but all there condition.  Yes this machine is a really nice original, but I think 11k is asking far too much.

I'm off to Vegas in a couple of weeks, so I hope to win big there... although there are other machines that I would pick up for less with the winnings..... :hopefull:

As for posting a picture of the machine, I don't feel comfortable in doing so as some here might know who it is, and I don't want to associate this thread with the seller.  For all I know he's a lurker or member here lol.
Out of respect to the seller, it was between he and I... not us and him.

This is cut and pasted from his reply after my offer (which was an offer that I was expecting him to allow me to counter etc....);

<<<<Hello the rare, seven up eighty eight is eleven thousand us dollars I just thought u should know please don't waist my time if u are not interested or can't come up with the money >>>>

NOT INTERESTED?!?  I've been in contact with him a few times well over a year with regards to the machine, and made an offer?  If that doesn't show interest, not sure what does lol

Oh well, in the end, it is a nice machine, and it's his, not mine... so he can ask / do as he pleases

No idea if its the same guy but seems familiar. Sounded like a a-hole I asked about buying a Decapper from. Told me it was 450,000 US Dollars. Same attitude I got.  It was like "you cant afford it so don't bother me". That type of person turns me off no matter how rare or bad I want it. I'd let him sit on it.

Sounds like he wants to keep it and for 11K he can. I would give him that much even for a restored one. I agree if you offered him what a 7up-81 would go for and he turned it down then he don't want to sell. My father always told me "everything I have is for sale at the right price!"

Give us his email Ed, we will pester the hell out of him and hopefully wear him down for you ...................

My Dad use to say "it's only worth what someone will pay for it".

Another "gee honey, I have it for sale, but no offers are coming in"

Rare? Yes. Valuable? Only to someone who believes it is worth $11K. Personally, i don't, but then i don't have an extra 11K  I can toss at a machine, so my view may be slanted

In his defence, he never listed it for sale... I kept asking about it till he finally said, ok, it's for sale.. shoot me an offer.

But still... he came back with 11k  :Oo:

I would rather take a Pepsi 88, cut out the embossing and weld in a 7up from a slider or quikold and keep 9k in my pocket lol....  Hmmmmm now it got me thinking  :tounge:

use a handheld cooler, its cheaper.

But the embossing on a handheld cooler would be WAY too small  on a 88.   The 88 coke and Pepsi embossing is one of the largest on upright machines.

The hamster in my head is always running   I need another project like I need a hole in my head (as my dad always says)

Looks like the 7UP is worth a lot more then this Vintage 1950's VMC 88 Coca Cola Coke Vending Machine.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/201060041252

You could of brought this one, added the embossing of a 7Up and saved $10,000.

Not sure if this is a machine in my neck of the woods, but if so, I've seen it. It's in great shape. Owner wouldn't let me take pictures, though.

This guy owns a great collectable and won't share?  Personally, I don't even want to see his machine now!  :glare:

Well, please don't get mad at someone that might not even be the person you think.... there are more than 1 7up 88 machines out there ya know

Like I said before, his  machine, his collection, his price..... I asked him if it were for sale... he didn't ask me if I wanted to buy it.

I have no hard feelings against him or anyone that sets the price they want for their machine... I just started this thread to see what people here thought of that machine is all.
Life is too short to be mad at people

 :happydrinkers:

Although, 11k is a bit silly in my opinion

Well, he said it wasn't for sale, then bug him for a "go away" price and get a "go away" price, nobody can complain.

Don't you guys have anything that isn't for sale that people keep asking about? I know a dealer near me that is persistent and doesn't take no for an answer.... I throw out the dumbest prices to get him to go away, if he were to actually pay that, I would let it go.

lol.... none of my family or friends even care for the things that I have.....
My dad told me you would have to GIVE him money to take one of my machines away

Just imagine if you travelled back in time and went to a greasy gas station, and told the guy working there that one day, that Vendo 81 over there in the corner will be re-painted (not sure if restored was even thought of back then lol) and then placed in the living room of a home.   He would think you were nuts   That's the generation of my dads mindset I guess.... hardworking guy all his life that had no attachments to things like this.

I'm not mad at anyone. I'm fully aware there's more than one. I just asked if it was the one I'm familiar with as I've seen it, know the seller, and was willing to shed some insight and try and help you.
