I remember watching a program on the discovery channel with my now 7 year old, about machines & how they work & their orgins in history, the ancient greek had devised a "vending machine" for dispensing "holy water" at the temples of the gods, the patron would insert a coin (drachma ?) into a large urn shaped vessel witha coin slot on the top, which would then trip a balance pan to open a valve to deliver a measure quantity of the "holy water" as the water was delivered the coins would drop into a coin box & await collection from the temple priests, so I'd imagine the "coin mechanism" has been around a while in many different forms, after all "a fool & his money"  :D
