Title: 33 weekend
Post by: ld26 on April 27, 2014, 07:17:37 pm
picked up a couple 33's this weekend, I think these are really cool...The embossed is complete, runs and vends nicely, the generic has a frayed cord I have to replace to test it out, I really like the patina on the embossed one, anybody have any advice on how to treat it to prevent it the rust from getting any worse?

Nice score.

I am sure some of the more experienced members on here will have some recommendations for rust control and preservation.

I would look under that sign I bet that's embossed also. Just a thought.

thought about that, its not held on with screws though, not sure if I would be able to get it on nicely again if I took it off, man that would be crazy if they covered up the nice embossing with that sign,

I'll play with it when I have some free time, maybe can get it off without doing any damage...

Does the tag say 3D-33? Is it original blue paint?

tag just says 33, so guess not embossed?  original paint is the pepsi dark blue not the light blue you see

The reason I was asking was because the 3D-33's were embossed for Pepsi so they couldn't be repainted and used by Coke. I had always believed the reason for the sign was to do nothing more than update the look for the early 60's.

I assume the embossed is a 3D-33?

Take that sign off, please. You can do it without damage. It's can be either generic or embossed Pepsi. Use Rust Mort on the Pepsi.

its embossed! got enough of the pins out to pull it back a little and peer behind the sign, unbelievable they decided to cover that up, pretty sweet, I'll snap a pic when I'm able to get the whole thing off...

Good deal. I kinda figured it was.  :happydrinkers: So I'm sticking with the theory that Pepsi put those signs on to give them a updated look.

sc, thanks for making me check, i don't think I would have done it, this is like how they covered up hardwood floors with ugly linoleum tiles back then  :happydrinkers:

Very cool, always awesome pulling the ugly parts off and finding that!  Based on the color, I wonder if they just paint bombed the machines then put on the new style sign as a refresh.

That was my guess as well. A kind of bring it into the 60's look. I almost bought this one about a year ago. I might check in and see if he lowered his price if he still has it.

It's too bad they had to drill holes through the face of those machines to add the signs.
Not so bad for the one that needs to be restored, but that original will be stuck with it.
I'll bet Curtis could modify it to become a light-up!  :happydrinkers:

Also noticed that some 33's have the VMC dimple on the door and some don't.......... embossed vs generic, solid coin door vs split door,
or one piece main door vs 2 pc (where the stainless strips hide the joint between the top and bottom).
I don't see a pattern.   Anyone have insight to this?

I don't know of a pattern for the dimple but I have seen some on the upper left half corner also which I don't understand why they would ever have put some there?

So I did the plug the pieces of wire into an extension cord trick on the light blue 33, it fired right up but never got cold, just blew warm air,

Sure this happens all the time but I'm a cooler guy, can anybody tell me what my next step should be?
