Just curious if anyone here bid on this awesome clock that I so wanted. Anyone here buy it??

Ha- just read the entire description... was a hand painted clock... wow... that's a lot of $$$$$

      I agree with Eric. The only Coke script even close to that was 1 year only.....1903.

Where did you read it was hand painted? I looked and found a similar wooden one with exact glass in Petretti's but nothing exact. This persons dad found it at a yard sale!! I could only dream of that.

I was thinking it was that old but I didn't think neon was around then. I just looked it up and found this.
In 1923, Georges Claude and his French company Claude Neon, introduced neon gas signs to the United States, by selling two to a Packard car dealership in Los Angeles. Earle C. Anthony purchased the two signs reading "Packard" for $24,000.
So how would a sign from early 1900 have neon and that script?

I used to be big into clocks..... because of all the uncertainty, fakes, etc. with clocks, I stay away.  IF I were to buy a clock again, I would have to see it in person first.  Ebay for clocks is just gambling.

I can't tell if you all are being serious or not but in my opinion this is someone's fantasy piece.  There is no way that coke would have used that green neon and for the face on the clock to look that good from the turn of the century.  Neon did not even come around in the US apparently until the 1920's so I would totally put my money on it being fantasy with a great ebay seller story.   :oops:

I agree there are alot of fakes and garbage out there but from what you see in the pictures what are your thoughts?? I'm going with 1930's era due to the neon but I'm still confused as to how or why it would have a logo from 1898-1900 if it was from the 30's??? The two things don't add up. Which leaves me with a doubt about its authenticity.

The clock  is prolly late 30's, 1940's.  The advertising ring is not. My unprofessional opinion.
What I could find on Radio.TV.Adv Inc is their customer base was Radio  and TV stations. 

I agree with you on the 30's as you can see from this Dr. Pepper clock that it has the same back to it.  Someone just made a fantasy front for it.

I think Kilroy is dead on. You just made me think of something. I just went back and looked at the Radio clocks I previously looked at and noticed something wrong with the coca cola one. The neon was designed to highlight the letters from behind, just as the radio one below. The coca cola one on the other hand does not illuminate the coca cola from behind. Thus making the glass added from an earlier piece that had no neon behind it. Boom case solved! :biggrin: I now feel relieved I didn't waste $$$3000.00

Even if the clock was real I would only buy if you could see it in person prior and pick it up. Seller only has 12 feedbacks and list shipping cost at $21. Couple of red flags there.

Agreed, I here ya but then again I bought a 1890's back bar from a guy with only 1 feedback at a very low price. I was very sceptical but it all worked out. I made sure the person picking it up for me brought the cash at pick up. I here what your saying, you have to watch your back these days.

It was made for Coca Cola by radio.tv.adv.inc  noted in the description...  When I first saw this post I looked at the link and thought it was a fake....
but it's real it's just Coke didn't make it.... the radio place did... It looks hand done by the different heights and widths of the lettering along the bottom
and Coke doesn't have anything near that for their logo.... no way would Coke have done that... their logo was already set by the 20s including the
registered trademark in the tail of the first “C” ... But maybe the radio place had it designed to what the customer requested and had it painted
or screened... It's a great clock.. but not by Coke... Which is what I was thinking they were trying to sell at first then I re-read the description....
So hopefully the buyer understood too.. great clock...

wouldn't the fact that the clock has 5 cents on it be a big red flag? For one I think a nickel would be a later price and more importantly why would Coke commission a fairly expensive piece of advertising with a permanent price on it?

The sellers description of who made it is clear but I'm not so sure that glass was done by radio TV inc. Why would all there clocks I've seen have the neon shine through the letter but this one doesn't. I think the glass may be from a Baird clock from 1898-1900 just as the one in Petretti's. Baird never had neon so there would be no need to make the painted glass that light could shine through. I would agree with you that it was made that way by radio TV inc for a customer if the neon showed through the letters but it doesn't as shown above. That's why I'm still unsure if glass was originally part of this clock. Not that it really matters to me if it's original it's already sold but I like to hear everyone's reasons they think it original or not.  Also I'm curious because I almost spent 3000.00 on a clock that could be piece meal.

Hhmmm... Yes you would think if it was an original painted face whether by the Radio Co. or anyone of that time, they would have used the
proper illuminated paints (if that's what it's called) do make that face... And by the way I have a clock made from a radio company, round where
the light from the bulb shines through the lettering similar to the one posted though it's not neon... anyway it was dirty so I was going to use a
wet cloth to wipe off the dust and dirt... The white paint came right off!!!!!  :wow:
So be careful when buying these type of clocks... now I have a clock that I was wanting to do in a cafe theme.. but now I'm thinking Coca-Cola!Ha

      Coca Cola made this clock in 4 different neon colors, notice the nicely notched corners.

      I'm thinking the clock in question was made from one of these folger's clocks:

        So even if the glass was hand painted 70 years ago, but not authorized by Coke......what makes it so valuable?

Glen, It sure does look like the same frame as the folgers. I think the clock may be a mix of several different clocks. Sure is a nice looking coca cola clock but I think it kills the value from a collectors standpoint.

Seth, I am glad that you missed the auction and saved yourself a lot of money!
