Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: ussexplorer on February 16, 2005, 06:03:41 am Update:
As you might have noticed. Nobody bid on the soda machine. So I sent him a e-mail after these couple of weeks to see if he still had the machine. He said yes he still has the machin I then e-mailed asking for pictures of the inside. My wife now has a job but I still got a few things to do first. He did say I could go and look at the machine. But I didn't want to get my hopes up until I had the cash in my hand. That will probably be on the 31st or so. My fuel pump died in my truck. later, Josh Well after searching and searching I found this little gem. To bad I have bills to pay. Plus I think the $150.00 is a little high. But here is a link. Maybe nobody will bid on it. Perhaps the only other person I know of in Idaho will get this. Would at least be nice to know it was going to a collector to be restored. Speaking of restored. Can I order the coke graphics on the side? "Things Go better with coke". Perhaps if it doesn't sell. I can talk down the price. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws....07&rd=1 Later, Josh Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: on February 16, 2005, 09:55:52 am Yeah, I saw that one too, but it's not in my area.
I see that graphic on page 75 of the Funtronics catalog says (288-CC), reproduction clear water release decal 9.5" x 8". $20 for the pair. By the way, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE nobody bid on the auction of the HA56B in Iowa that ends today, as I've been watching it for all 7 days and hope to get it for $99 before it ends. It would be a full day's round trip for me to pick it up (4 1/2 hours each way), but that is about the only way I will be able to afford a square corner V-56 these days. I really hope no one else bids. Good luck on your Idaho auction ussexplorer! Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: loman4ec on February 16, 2005, 10:14:09 am Markito,
Where are you located again? If that doesn't work out I am going to pick up a Vendorlator 81 square top in a few days. It is pepsi but I would make you a heck of a deal on it. Just a thought if that doesn't work. Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: on February 16, 2005, 10:56:55 am Thanks loman4ec, but I am in Minnesota and I would have loved to buy one from Kevin or you or any of the guys, but right now we are going through a family financial crisis and all I can afford is about the $99 for the whole thing. That's why I'm going for the fixer-upper in Iowa, to drive to, because the SHIPPING ALONE on anyone else's machines would cost twice or triple what I'm hoping to get this one for.
I'd prefer a different year/style for the V-56, but that exact machine and price is the only way I'll get another machine for my game room these days. I sure hope no one else bids. But thanks so much for the offer. Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: on February 16, 2005, 11:07:27 am By the way, I'm selling lots of stuff on eBay in hopes of raising extra cash for my family (but it can't go to my Coke Machine addiction )
Check the stuff out here: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZreallywonderfulstuffQQhtZ-1 I'll be adding new stuff everyday, including some neat old Coke stuff, so keep checking back. Sorry to have hijacked this thread ussexplorer, we now return to our normal programming... Thanks, Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: loman4ec on February 16, 2005, 12:20:09 pm Markito I understand. I am going to get the machine in a week or so and I really don't want it. I just wanted to offer. I think I am going to part it out so if anyone needs parts to a Vendorlator 81 square top let me know.

ussexplorer, in addition to Funtronics, I see that one original decal is available on eBay right now, but again it is only one decal not two: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws....MEWA:IT Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: on February 16, 2005, 04:39:47 pm
Whoo hoo, I won it! It ended up being $157.50 in the end because another Minnesotan bid too, but still a nice low enough price. I would have prefered an older more charming V-56, but this was all I could afford. I plan to have the grubby dark coin door and lower plates eventually painted red to give it the older model look. That will make the whole thing look better. Thanks for not bidding everyone! Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: sodaworks on February 16, 2005, 04:50:00 pm Markito,
I have 4 of the Things go better with coke decals in white vinyl, if you are interested let me know. Terry Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: on February 16, 2005, 05:04:05 pm Thanks for mentioning that Terry. I assume those are reproduction ones?
How much for 2? I may buy two and ussexplorer could buy the other two. I hope to remove the huge Coca-Cola script decals off the sides and then put the "Things go better with Coke" decals on the sides to make it look like the cooler, earlier 60's V-56's. But, and it's a big but, if the there is sun fading that would still show the script even after the script decals were removed, then I can't. I don't plan to paint the wntire machne. It is for personal use in my game room. Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: MoonDawg on February 16, 2005, 06:15:37 pm If that were my machine, I would just paint the front door and leave the rest alone
Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: on February 16, 2005, 06:53:07 pm Probably good advice. Do they sell red replacement doors? Or would I have to have it stripped and painted?
Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: ussexplorer on February 17, 2005, 12:13:58 am Well, the decals are not a concern right now. I also need a coin mech. Until I get my UGLY westing house machines up here. You know the 6 handle critters. I'm not to worried about anything. It is nice to know about the decals. It will probably all happen this summer. Though I hope to at least get one machine up here before then. As for the current machine on ebay. I got a few days to think about it. To be honest it would probably sit outside with a tarp over it until summer if I did get it. I really love the black shiny compressors.
Later, Josh Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: Creighton on February 18, 2005, 06:51:23 am Hey Kito,
Congrats on the new score!! That will clean up just fine. Let us know how it goes, Creighton Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: on February 18, 2005, 09:52:25 am Thanks so much. I would love to have machines that are more cool, but this is the only way I can afford having machines in my home right now.
Question for you guys: If I drive my 2001 Town & Country minivan down there to pick it up, can my van handle the weight of this Vendo HA56B? Or a I gonna have to go through the heck of trying to borrow someone's pickup truck? I have no sense of how much these weigh since my only other machine was 77" tall. It'll be about an 8 hour round trip. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws....MEWN:IT Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: loman4ec on February 18, 2005, 10:54:01 am Kito
I had a guy come and pick up my Cv168 that weighed over 500lbs in a mini van. No problem. The V56's are rather light and really small. Only about 4 1/2 feet tall. Since you are not looking for a perfict restored machine I have known people to take their machines to Maaco. They charge something like $125 to paint the whole thing including body work. I have never used them but I would bet that they would do a pretty good job. You would need to take the machine at least slightly apart. Like take the bottle and coin door off and all of the trim off. It wouldn't be a restored machine but atleast you could have the coin door painted and the Coke scripts painted. By the way your machine looks like an older machine that was updated later in life. I posted a pic of one of my old 56's. This was a later model machine before I started. The whole machine was painted woodgrain. I think next to the 63's the 56 is my favorite. Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: BryanH on February 18, 2005, 12:36:10 pm Kito - picked up my VMC56 in a minivan also... No problem. They're not heavy at all. Had help loading it but unloaded it myself by sliding (on a blanket) over the rear bumper. Just load it top first so it'll come out feet first.
Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: on February 18, 2005, 02:25:51 pm loman4ec & hartlenb,
Thanks for the great info. Especially about Maaco. I am very relieved that I will be able to use my minivan. I hate to bother relatives for trucks, let alone put 8 hours worth of milage on their truck. Plus driving my own vehicle is more comfortable for 8 hours than someone else's that I'm not used to. Thanks guys! By the way loman4ec, your 56 is the look that I want for mine, that is why I want to remove the script and have the majority of it painted red. Do they have to sand it down or anything first or do they just put a new layer of red over the right areas? Obviously I would remove the script decals first. Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: loman4ec on February 18, 2005, 03:10:19 pm Well Maaco obvously doesnt have the best name in painting but it is mostly because they don't do very good body work. If you are able to do most of the prep like removing the decals and the woodgrain contact paper on the front, filling any dents that you want filled and sanding out most of the scratches they will give you a rather nice paint job. When I turned 16 I bought an old S10 pickup and I did the body work on it and took it to Maaco and they did a great job. They paint with Dupont Nason paint which is what I use. If you go ask them if they will paint it in Sprint red. It is a factory pack color and it is the same color as the Vendo 56 that I posted before. If you are going to have it done have them paint the whole machine. and remember the more prep work you do the better the machine will turn out.
Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: on February 18, 2005, 05:13:09 pm Thanks loman4ec, again, really great info. By "have them paint the whole machine", I assume you mean just the exterior, right? Can they mask off the white bezel framing around the glass door area like on yours? I obviously want to keep that part white.
I am now very excited to give this eye-sore a new makeover. So the paint I ask for is "Sprint Red" Dupont Nason paint, eh? If I need to sand off any decal residue, etc. What do I use to sand it with? Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: loman4ec on February 18, 2005, 05:35:58 pm Wash the machine first and then wipe off the decal adhesive with paint thinner or an adhesive remover. Then sand the machine as necessary. I really suggest removing the white parts from the machine and having them repaint them as well. It is rather difficult taking the machine apart but since you are doing the job it doesnt cost anything to prep it. The more you do the better it will turn out. I don't think that I would have the machine painted and leave the origional white parts unless they are really nice. You can always paint the entire machine red and just paint the door white. That is what I did on my first v56. Here is a pic of what that would look like. This machine is painted sprint red as well.
Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: on February 18, 2005, 05:57:26 pm That version is nice too.
Is the "Have A Coke" white sign on the side a vinyl decal? Is it on both sides? Thanks so much, Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: loman4ec on February 18, 2005, 06:30:21 pm The signs are on both sides and they are vinyl. I just went to the local sign store and took them a picture of a machine from ebay I think and they made them for me. It is just a piece of white Vinyl with the letters cut out so the red paint from underneith showes through. I think they only charged me $30 to do both sides. If you want I can give you their number and I am sure they would send them to you.
Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: joesquid on February 20, 2005, 04:50:08 pm Kito,
Too bad you're in MN and I'm (soon to be) in Maine, I could show you alot in the way of bodywork and basics in paint. When I picked up my Vendo 144, I stumbled across an older gentleman down in Gulf Breeze, FL (I was stationed in Pensacola at the time) who restores coke machines and sells them through his coke memorabilia shop "Buccaneer Giftshop" in FT. Walton Beach. I started bugging him with questions, he invited me down to see his operation, I noticed several machines had electrical wires hanging all over and offered my electrical expertise in exchange for his restoration expertise and use of his facilities....and the rest is history! In the end he thought he was getting the better part of the deal so he gave me two Vendo 39s (needing parts and restoration), one Vendo 23 (even replaced the compressor for me), and one Westinghouse WC-44SK.....oh yeah and a K-line O-gauge Coca-Cola Steam Engine Train Set!! Horsetrading is such a wonderful thing!! I figure it would be nice to assist someone else with the same passion...so if you're ever in Maine.... By the way, if any of you find yourself in FT. Walton Beach, stop by Buccaneer Giftshop and tell Oscar Ring what a great guy he is (he'll probably cut you a discount too! ) Congrats on your new baby kito!! Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: Bob K on February 20, 2005, 05:15:50 pm joesquid, where in ME are you relocating to? I'm in MA, around 20 miles north of Boston. Be nice to have a fellow SMC'er nearby.
Bob Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: joesquid on February 20, 2005, 05:22:38 pm Brunswick, Me. I'll be up there working on my ship (currently being built at Bath Iron Works, Bath, ME) for the next year and a half, then back down to (disgustingly) warm and sunny Jacksonville, FL.....gotta love the Navy!!
Maybe we can hook up while I'm up there...my wife would love nothing more than to deal with someone else who has my "sickness" Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: BrianB on February 20, 2005, 05:33:14 pm Bath, what a great place......I take it you're pre-comming the Farragut, Eric. I had the pleasure of being a part of the precom crew for the USS Prebble (DDG-88). I kinda wish I had my current "affliction" back then, it would have kept me more busy with something a whole lot more fun! Good to see another squid with the sickness!
Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: vendobaldtops on February 20, 2005, 09:26:48 pm Hey Guys,
I also like the look of the early 60s square corners and really dislike the woodgrain finish of the mid to late 60s machines. For those who want to get the cooler look (IMHO) of the Have a Coke or TGBWC sides and the all metal front door, I have found that a heat gun, maybe even a hair dryer, can take off mid 60s / replacement decals and woodgrain more effevctively...I just took off the woodgrain today and used a heat gun...it just pulled right off in big pieces. I feel sorry for my buddy who once used a razor blade to cut it off...in small pieaces I am sure.... Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: joesquid on February 20, 2005, 10:05:33 pm Brian,
You guess right, I'm going up to set up engineering dept programs (I'm the ship's GSEC) and will be up there until June 2006. In fact I'll most likely be two machines heavier by the time I get there next month. I've got a Vendo 56 squaretop to pick up and possibly a Cavalier CS-64 on the way up. So how about you? Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: BrianB on February 20, 2005, 10:55:48 pm Good luck to you Chief!! If you've never pre-commed before, it's alot of tough work but really rewarding. I was an STG1(SW) before I got out after 10 years to go to work for NAVSEA out here in Indiana at NSWC Crane as a Techrep for SQQ-89(v) Sonar Equipment. I'm currently in the Reserves and recently crossrated to Master-at-Arms for a bunch of different reasons.
I didn't get bit by the Soda Pop machine bug 'till I moved from San Diego to Indiana. I had to find something to do with all my new found "spare time". I figured out that leaving my watch in the house while I'm in the garage with the door shut helps simulate underway time (paint fumes and cold coffee too!) Currently I have a biggin' square top 1960 Vendorlator VF117B-H Pepsi Machine and a recently purchased Cavalier 55D. The Pepsi machine is all ready to re-assemble, just waiting for the body to be painted and the Cav 55 is a project I just started on. I am however always on the lookout for other machines to add to my "fleet"! Different subject - Hey Josh (Loman4ec), My buddy Joe says the Candy Machine rocks (We both work together in the same engineering group at work), he's just worried about what his wife is gonna say when she see's it. He's kinda an "impulse buyer" I got him started on pop machines after I got my Vendorlator and then he thought my Stoner Junior candy Machine was pretty cool....An so it goes! Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: on February 21, 2005, 12:09:12 pm
Eric, How wonderfully kind of you to offer to take me under your wing. That is so nice and exactly what I need. Too bad I a never in the Maine area (though I sure wish I were). I will remember your good deed and who knows, maybe someday. But if you (or anyone else here) are ever passing through Minnesota (I'm only 15 minutes from the Minneapolis/Saint Paul Int. airport) I'd love to meet you and vend you an ice cold glass bottled drink from the V-216MD in my kitchen. Thanks again Eric, really nice of you. Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: on February 21, 2005, 12:13:32 pm
Hey vendobaldtops, Thanks for the great info. I will be doing a lot of decal removal on my newly won V-56 and will use the heatgun/hairdrier. That just saved me a lot of time and effort. I haven't driven down there to pick it up yet because financially times are really tough right now and I think the wife would freak if I showed up with a new toy (since I don't plan to ever sell it). The seller told me I could keep it with him in his storage unit for a few extra weeks. Frustrating because I want to get started on it right away, but then staying married is important too. Title: Only if i had the cash vendo h83a Post by: ussexplorer on March 04, 2005, 11:41:45 pm Just a little update. I'm not sure how many of you go back and re-read old posts. I do once in a while. I was going for after I modified this. It would go back towards the top. But it didn't. So I added this part.
