Title: Rusty Gold QUIKOLD Part II
Post by: BONOVOX on March 26, 2014, 06:00:31 pm
So when I saw a member her post a pic of his great Quikold Jr find... I was one pf many who congratulated him on it,  and had a dream that night that I wish that were me making a find like that.
Fast forward a few weeks and that very same cooler is sitting at my shop! (I'll spare you all the details of this hunt, as it basically involved a computer and me sitting on the couch lol)

1refrescofan, I just want to thank you for all your help, and for letting the cooler go to someone who will enjoy it forever, and even pass it down to my kid!
I know pics of the cooler were posted earlier, but now that it's new for me, I just gotta post a few more

I just picked it up yesterday, and since I'm slow at work, I already tore it down and started to work on it.  I'm attaching a few pics of the sides where I cut off the rust of  the  lip and will be welding in a new pc in to support the new base I have to put it.
I'm also having to make a new liner.
Sending it off this week to get acid dipped (free for me as I send off about 50 tons a year for galvanizing... so the guys at the plant do me a solid  )

Will post more pics as the progress goes..... this is my first resto that I am EVER undertaking, so I hope I don't screw it up! (seems like this Jr. is easy, as it came apart pretty easy..... I guess I should be carful what I say lol)

Ed

Everything it doesn't have Rod carries... the lid, cap catcher and gasket....  Ace hardware carries a handle almost identical to the original if you don't have one....
let me know and I can get the part number for you... also check out quikold.com (the site ld26 built) it has other info for parts and new casters...
Can't wait to see it finished.. best of luck and congrats! :happydrinkers:

hi ed does the acid dip work as good as sand blasting. cant wait to see it done

its a MUCH slower process.... depending on the amount of rust and / or the amount or type of paint.... it can be a process anywhere from 1 to 3 days.
Ive never done a small thin item like this before.... I usually send beams, HSS tubing etc... but I would think it's al the same.... we shall see.
Whats better ( I feel) is that it is not as harsh as blasting.
I am bringing it tomorrow so I hope to have it back by Monday.  Will post pics when done.

I made a new tub today, but forgot to bring my camera to work... will post those tomorrow.

I'll be curious to see what it looks like too after the acid dipping.

The only negative I've heard about that process is that if there are any seams, the acid can get caught in there and continue to eat away over a long period of time.?

do they put it in a neutralizing bath afterwards?

I'm sure they and you know what your doing, but just my thoughts... hate to have it come out looking like Swiss Cheese on ya?

Well, after a summer of coaching Baseball, camping, working etc... I finally got around to getting the Jr sent off to be dipped (pickled dip).
I brought it to where I do all my galvanizing for work, and they told me that it was too thin of a material to be dipped in their tanks... if they tried it, they and I were worried that it would be too strong of a solution that it would eat away the metal faster than the structural steel that they dip for me all the time.

SO, with a friends recomondation, there is a local place to me (just 5 minutes from my work) that specializes in dipping car parts, and special / thin metals....
Dropped if off on Monday, and it was ready in 3 days....  It came out PERFECT!  I can't believe how it took off all the rust and paint and turned the metal to something that looks better than if I ordered the sheet today! lol

Now it's off to the auto body......
This is my first self resto, and I'm looking forward to the challenge.... not too much to it, but I have two left hands so we shall see

That looks great!  I think of all the time I've spent behind a DA sander getting all the junk off parts and nothing ends up looking even close to that, good luck with the rest of the resto.

Find good people to perform the technical stuff is key to making things easier for you.
