Title: Whats in a SMC name?
Post by: BONOVOX on March 03, 2014, 08:34:36 pm
Well, after reading some old posts tonight, I started thinking what some of your names here mean, and some are obvious (Slider Bob or Eric... I assume ur names lol)

But others, like mine, can be puzzling.

My name BONOVOX comes from me being a HUUUGE U2 fan.  The lead singer, Bono whos real name is Paul Hewson, when the band first started when they were teenagers, went by the stage name of BONOVOX which in Latin means beautiful voice.  He got that name from a hearing aid store in his town that was called BONOVOX.
As a side note, to show how big a fan I am of U2... I actually named my son JOSHUA, with his middle name being TREE.  I never thought my wife would have agreed to that, but when he was born we agreed on Joshua, and as a somewhat joke, I said how about TREE, and she said she liked it!!  and so, Joshua Tree is my son :o)
I use BONOVOX or ACHTU2NG (which is my VW Golf license plate lol) for most of my names on the net.

So what does your name here on SMC mean? Would like to hear if there is a story behind it... etc...

Mysterious Ways was the 2nd song on our wedding playlist.

My user name is just a play on words and Johnny Cash's "My name is Sue, how do you do!"

In 1977 when I started playing college baseball everyone on the team had a nick name . The coaches and team captains would come up with them and when the program came out all the new players would find out what it was. Being a home run hitter they took my first two letters of my last name and added hammer - cohammer

No story behind mine, K for Ken and Bare it is the proper pronunciation of Barrett. Or a fun use is when I tell some one to kiss my arse and they tell me to bare it "that's my name, don't wear it out"  :tounge:

Title: Re: Whats in a SMC name?
Post by: Larry on March 04, 2014, 08:46:26 am
Mine is Larry because my mother didn't name me Lawrence.  It used to be Mills400c, named after a machine that I owned.  I chose that name because I was hoping someone would say that they had the same machine and had a schematic.  After selling the machine, I simplified my name.

Well Joshua Tree is better than 11 O'Clock Tick Tock.  I saw U2 right before Live Aid.  I just missed them at the Aragon Brawlroom, a local small venue, by two months.  I saw them at UIC, a college auditorium.  It was the Unforgetable Fire tour.  I had first row center, before the crowd rushed in to fill the void between the seats and the stage, but I could stand on my chair and tower over everyone.  It still was the best show that I have seen.  MTV was filming it, but they never released the film.  However, there was a European bootleg, made into and album.  I found that last year.  Only one skip, no pops.  I remember a guy, two seats away from me, giving me dirty looks when I screamed like a sissy girl at the electrifing guitar licks from The Edge.  It's funny that I found the bootleg tape a year after the show at a record convention, yes these existed back then, and I could here myself all over that tape.  On the album, same recording, they toned down my soprano whoops and hollers.

By the way, The Red Rockers opened up for them.  Who??  Exactly.  Too bad it wasn't the red rocker Sammy Hagar.  I saw him opening up for the Scorpions Love Drive tour, same era at the Aragon Ballroom.  That was my second favorite show, or maybe a tie for first.  Sammy played four or five encores.  The Scorpions kept letting Hagar come out for more encores, so in turn the Scorpions played all their awesome older songs, plus most of Love Drive.

11 o'clock tick tock.... too funny

When we were expecting our second child, a girl, people told us we should name her Gloria (old U2 ersong)  But we didn't like that name.
So we settled on Charlie Rose (only later finding out there is an old guy who does movie star interviews with the same name lol)

Some of your answers above are great!  Chris and Eric... too funny lol

Collecture....

Post by: SIGNGUY on March 04, 2014, 10:34:31 am
Mine is not that Creative either but I Dealt a lot more in vintage advertising signs than soda machines when I signed up..
I had an incredible collection of Vintage New old Stock Coke and Hamm's Beer signs that I worked hard at obtaining, lots of buying and selling and upgrading to the best signs I could get.
I sold a lot of my collection about 3/4 of it and ended up buying my 1959 Corvette with Cash.. so I must have done something right!
So Signguy was what my creative mind came up with then.
(a lot of people assume i'm in the printing/graphics business.. I'm not....)
Great Topic...! :happydrinkers:

I started out only collecting Coca Cola signs (tin and porcelain mainly), hence my name.  My friend always said that I would one day switch to cardboard signs and other products and sure enough these days I like country store, gas and oil, machines, and soda.  I only have a Vendo 44 and am still on the hunt for a Jacobs 56, but I love reading all about what you all find and how you cleaned, restored, or refurbished it.  I do not have any tools to restore anything and I like to buy all original so elbow grease is what I am good at as far as restoring!  Once I find the next machine on my list I will post pictures, I have a few friends who are pickers on the hunt!

Huge U2 fan from way back (Ed and I have talked at length) - went through 3 copies of Live Under A Blood Red Sky in my Walkman back in... What 1985? Thank goodness "The Wall" had a lifetime guarantee!

Finally saw them live during rehearsal for the Zoo TV tour. They practiced at Hersheypark stadium and semi-last minute decided to do a show to test their stage show live. It was awesome. They played their set list for the tour plus a bunch of older stuff that Bono said they don't really play live any more. Sunday Bloody Sunday, I Will Follow, New Years Day, etc.  My buddy and I were in the 2nd row center.

Larry - Red Rockers had a great hit called China. Still hear it often on satellite radio.

Jim

My name is the initials of my business name SC- Serious Cycles and part of my uncles old phone number 1101 that stuck in my head. Not sure exactly why though. I've used it as my email for years and I wasn't sure if I would remember my user name to log in so I used it. Not realizing It would be the name I would be known as in the future. Now I wish I picked something better.
I'm now curious to know if you guys changed your names what would you want them to be?

Title: Re: Whats in a SMC name?
Post by: Slider-Bob on March 04, 2014, 03:56:15 pm
I started out as Ideal-Bob, because I bought my first Ideal 35 slider from JohnieG (now owned by Foos).

Then I learned there were other sliders made by other slider companies (Glasco, S&S, Quikold, etc).

So Kilroy suggested I become SliderBob instead of Ideal-Bob, so Jim B changed the name for me.

But really I should be called FlipperBob (also penned by JohnieG), because that's what I do.  Guilty as charged!

But I do collect other upright machines (2 Coke V81D's, 2 VMC Pepsi 81's, Faygo 81 Transitional, etc.).

Post by: mznb1u on March 04, 2014, 07:16:21 pm
University of Michigan alum and big fan; hence, mznb1u (maize and blue). The reason for the odd spelling is that is how I had to spell it to get a license plate for my car because mznblu was taken. That was my plate when I joined SMC. Based on the machines I have bought over the years I should probably be StonerTim because I have owned just as many Stoners as Coke machines.

Tim

I have had Flippa (the Boston pronunciation of Flipper) as a nickname since 1979, long before it was used to describe someone who buys & sells stuff.

I have always been an avid swimmer and diver, and as a kid I would always swim underwater.  We used to go swimming in a local reservoir and would jump & dive off this big rock ledge into deep water.  I would torture my friends by jumping in after everyone else, staying underwater until I saw them start swimming back to the rock then grabbing one of their legs and pulling them under.  My nickname was Jaws for a while because of this game.

One hot summer day we were at the rock and a group of teenagers we didn't know were betting each-other who could swim the furthest underwater.  One of my buddies started bragging that I could beat them all.  These guys were quite a bit older than us, so after looking me over, they all laughed and said I could get in on the wager if we had the money.  Six of us were able to scrape together $10 so I could compete.  Three of the older guys went first, then I dove.  I swam twice as far as anyone else.  One other guy went after me, but I had beaten his distance as well.

One of their friends back on the rock started laughing at and taunting all his friends, saying that they all got beat by a little kid.  This guy kept calling me Flipper the Dolphin and making fun of the other guys.  The last guy that dove told me that he actually thought i had drowned because I was down so long.  I grabbed the $50 and we all got dressed and took off; we weren't sure if the teenagers were going to let us leave with the money.  We were 11 at the time, so we went to the store on the way home and bought a ton of sodas and candy bars and ate until we were sick.  The nickname stuck, my buddies still call me Flippa.

Mine is the name of our family's restoration business.

My dad "George" started it in the 70's airbrushing custom vans in the hippie days. He then moved to doing collision jobs and custom autobody and paint on cars. We started to do gas pumps and soda machines in the early 1990's in between fender benders to keep the guys in the shop busy, and over the years we slowly backed off on cars and did more pumps and soda machines.

Now that's mainly all we do.

Shane.

The Mrs: "Have you ever asked yourself how much money you spend on this stuff ?"
Me: "Nope, but the day you can take a pair of your shoes, restore them and make them worth 3 to 10 times more than what you originally paid...I'll fund your shoe collection too."
