Title: New Addition. Post by: Sarman47 on January 23, 2014, 09:10:08 pm Well I brought home a Cavalier C-55-D coke machine tonight. There is actually 6 - C55-D's listed for sale within a 2 hour drive from were I live ( I will post the other one's, in case someone close to ontario is on the hunt ).
This machine was purchased new in the early 60's for his gas station. I have the original purchase contract, warranty and also found the check copies for $5.55 / month he paid until it was payed for in full. It has the shims, spacers, racks and he also gave me a spare vend motor. Hoping to update the sign to a lighted one and maybe add the chrome when I overhaul it. Title: Re: New Addition. Title: Re: New Addition. Post by: Pixel on January 23, 2014, 09:21:43 pm Congratulations! Are those shims the ones to adapt it for vending cans?
I don't think I've ever seen one of these in person, but from what I hear, you won't find a more compact square-top. In a hobby where floor space rapidly becomes premium, that's a very good thing. I wonder if this machine was inspired by the V44. Title: Re: New Addition. Post by: HowDueYouDue on January 23, 2014, 09:34:06 pm Very cool. Congrats!

I will post some better pictures of them tonight. Funny you mentioned space, I said the same thing to my wife. Yes this is machine #2 of ??????. It looks like that may be the case with the C-55D, a square top version of the VMC44 and V44. Title: Re: New Addition. Post by: Sarman47 on January 24, 2014, 06:26:56 am Very cool. Congrats! Thanks Howdueyoudue The best part the wife loves it. Title: Re: New Addition. Post by: Sarman47 on January 24, 2014, 06:35:42 am I have one and would love to also have a light up sign in mine. Great find looks to be in good condition. The paint is showing its age for being 54 years old. I think I may disassemble and prime and paint the body. I was thinking of making my own sign, if I can't hunt up an original. Also would like to add the chrome trim, which I think I read on here was part of the optional kit with the light back in the day. Title: Re: New Addition. Post by: tkaz on January 24, 2014, 10:40:21 am What size is the sign on these? I can send over the dimensions of the CSS/USS marquee if you want.
Title: Re: New Addition. Post by: Pixel on January 24, 2014, 01:08:47 pm I'm going theoretical on this one, as I don't recall seeing a C-55 in person, but I'm thinking that at least the coin entry pieces are the same as the ones on this style of CS-64.
This early C-55 has a taller coin door, as the vending spout is integrated into the door. From the picture here (http://soda-machines.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=233&Itemid=14), it appears a later redesign of the C-55 front separated the vending spout from the coin door, permitting the entire coin door on the later models to be shared with the same style CS-64, assuming the dimensions of the coin door are the same. I'd suspect this is why the early CSS-64 coin doors are made in two sections and bolted together. The C-55 has the coin entry section mounted to the body, the CS-64's have it bolted to the coin door. I'm thinking the CS-64 sign will work. However, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Time to get out your tape measure. |
