Title: What do you stock your machine with?
Post by: Paul M. on February 03, 2005, 12:04:58 pm
Just curious what you guys are putting in your machines.  Are you going the nostalgic route with retro bottles and flavors?  If so, where do you get them and how much.

Or, are you just stocking with beer, coke, water, something else?  Plastic, glass, or cans?  Free-vend or pay?

(Maybe we should do a poll on this.....)

Sorry for rehashing old ground.  I just found the thread from Jul/Aug on bottled drinks.

Another question arises from reading that thread, though.  How many of you rebottle their own sodas?  In one post Adam101 mentioned that he uses a "breakmate machine".  How does this work?  Is it worthwhile if I had, say... 80 bottles or so?

I have store bought bottles in mine.  The only thing that is plastic is the water - I only use Deja-Blue since the bottles are stiff.  Let's see here what's in the Vendo...
MGD
Labatt Blue
Berry Weis
Water
Coke
Mt. Dew
Grape Crush

Paul It depends on how much you can get Coke in bottles where your at and then figure the cost for those as opposed to Buying something to refill bottles with Like a Breakmate or Wunderbar etc. I can tell you this If I were to Buy the little breakmate boxes filled with syurp, as opposed to refilling them with Syrup from a 5 gal bag in box the price is MORE per OZ then a 2 Liter However as soon as you Get the Bulk syrup and to another extent Bulk CO2 then the price shoots down to I believe 2 cents per 10 oz ( Ie one bottle). From there you judt need to run the numbers( math time) and add up Costs Upfront and then Add up what 80 bottles would cost to buy and divide and see how long it will take for you to break even. Hopefully that helps some more Adam

Does the stiffness of the plastic bottles really matter?

My Cavalier 64 has Coke (8 oz bottles) 2 rows , Diet Dew (16.9 oz plastic), Orange Crush 12 oz bottles, IBC, Grape Crush 12 oz bottles , Faygo 8 oz glass Strawberry (found at odd lots), and  Florida's Natural Orange juice in cans (sam's club).

A few times I will throw in an oddball like 9 oz bottled Chocolate Soldier (Dollar general 6 pack is $2)- very good better than YaHoo. I am too cheap to buy bottled H2O.:D

Since we have another baby on the way, a friend joked that we could put the bottles of milk/formula in my Vendo, so that when we need to feed the baby, I'd just drop in a dime and down would drop a chilled bottle for the little one!

I tried Ice Mountain at first.  The flimsy bottle basically crushed it's way out and and never released the vending solenoid.

Right now I have one functioning can machine (Cavalier C6-390-228).  I stock it with coke, diet caffeine free dr. pepper (wife), sunkist, A&W rootbeer, sprite, and.....(this is how much I love my wife).......mountain dew.  I have the machine set for .25 and let all the neighborhood kids buy sodas from the machine.  So far, after 2 years of doing this, I've only had two kids attempt to "cheat" me by putting slugs in the machine.  They're already half the price of any other machine in town, but still they gotta try cheating the system...amazing.  Coin rejector works beautifully I might add.

When the word started getting around about "Mr. Johnson's coke machine" I put the word out to all the neighborhood kids that I only had two rules concerning the coke machine:
1.  If the garage door is up, feel free to go right in and get a drink.
2.  If anything else in my garage is touched, the door comes down and stays down permanently.

So far I've been fortunate, nothing messed with in the garage.  Of course they're dying to see me finish the other machines (they loved my restored Vendo 144E; one enterprising 10 year old was attempting to save enough to buy it....if only more kids would show that kind of drive) but, unfortuntely, duty calls me to Maine, so will be moving from sunny Pensacola to Maine next month.  Guess I won't have to worry about the compressor running too much up there!!

Mountain Dew is THE drink of teenagers everywhere (AT LEAST IN SOUTHERN OHIO). I could probably put code red, live wire, regular dew, diet , and pitch black in my machine and it would sell out!

Had a Vendo 154 in my garage last summer.  I had kids knocking on the door with quarters in hand to buy pops.  They couldn't believe that coke came in glass bottles.  Usually I keep coke, diet coke, sprite,dr pepper, boylan's creamy red birch beer, IBC root beer, Orange crush, Grape crush, Mt. Dew and Cheerwine in Glass.  In plastic Pepsi 16.9's and Dasani water,  That's why I like the big slant shelfs.  I just can't get enough variety with a vendo 63.  BTW I went to Dollar General this evening and loaded up and Chocolate SoliderI havent had it in probably 20 years:)

To refill I dispense the soda poip into a large measuring pitcher and then use a funnel to get it into the bottles. Its not that difficult once you get the hang of it and if you have others that can help all the better. Especially if you have kids you can use them as cheap labor. then you get a bottle capper and blank bottle caps and your all set. Of course you need to clean the bottles beforehand :p

Someone earlier mentioned Odd Lots.  I tried Big Lots (don't know if it is the same chain) yesterday and they had zilch.  Dollar General sounds promising.  I never go, but it isn't far, so I might run down and check for Chocolate Soldier.  Someone said it beats YooHoo.Other than IBC, I can't find much in glass.  Boylan and Jones soda I can get at World Market, but they run about 3.99 for 4. WalMart had Crush, but not in the last year or so. :(

Adam101,
Do you know of any good websites relating to bottling your own sodas?

All,
I picked up some Orange Crush and Stewart's Root Beer in 12 oz twist-tops and some 8 oz Cokes that need a bottle opener.  All at Walmart.  They had other Crush flavors and IBC, too.  I might go back and stock up on some to try.  I didn't see any diets.  Here are the prices I paid.

Crush 6pk - $2.50
Coke 6pk - $3.98
Stewarts 4pk - $2.50

I've got a Dollar General about 3 blocks from home.  I'll have to check for this Chocolate Soldier y'all are talking about.  I've heard of them before but never had one.

Public's has 8oz coke classic bottle 6 packs for about $5. I think I would just buy beer at that price.

I have been checking out the small beer bottles & have found Bud, Bud lite & Corona in the small 8 oz bottles.

Adam,
What kind of capper do you use?  Hand or machine?

Why couldn't you just get some 3-liter Cokes and refill the bottles from them?  Or does that cause the drinks to lose some of their fizz?  Is using the Breakmate that much cheaper?

Title: What do you stock your machine with?
Post by: on February 15, 2005, 04:44:20 pm
Paul, I went back and found My orig. calculations for the breakmate as opposed to a Can...... they are, after you have the syrup and supplies and 20 LB external breakmate tank (holds much more then the dinky little one) It comes out to 25cents for a can (AVG. including deposit) and . 0135   I.E. 1.3 Cents each for a Breakmate made pop supply. Going further I went and did a calculation for your situation basing it on an avg. cost of a 2 liter of coke @ $1.10 yielding approx. 6, 12 oz glasses. So 1.10/6 glasses = 18 cents a glass (not too shabby) But when I run the numbers with My breakmate I get  back to that . 0135 per glass that's ( .18 / .0135) 13.33 glasses Of Mine for one glass from the 2 liter. That's 1333% savings/percent difference...........LOL. Seriously though lets get down to it, a breakmate costs say in total with the CO2 adapter and a 20 gal tank (external) hummmm around 400.00 . I have gotten them for much less due to luck and my willingness to tinker with them. OK so IM gonna go back to the 2 liter scenario, that's 18cents you would have to drink 400/.18 to break even that's 2,222 drinks then your home free, now 2,222 drinks divided 12 months is 185 of them a month for a year. So that gives you an Idea of how long you would have to wait to see a savings. Assuming your spending a Max of 400.00 you can get them for less I have seen them go for 250.00 ish on ebay etc. Hope that helps or maybe just confuses the issue.

here are some Key points:

Using the breakmate with the syrups they sell and the Small co2 costs you around 28cents for a glass..............IE NO DEAL

If you ditch the Small co2 buy 3 breakmate syrup boxes and refill you drop the cost to 1.3 cents each...........IE cheap

a can of coke costs avg. 25 cents

as for the bottling I use the lever bench kind See link above to the bottle caps its on the same page/ one like the one I use, Don't try the squeeze kind you will get tired quick the lever kind takes around 3 sec to cap the bottle (its a learning curve/ get in the groove of things kinda deal)

One major thing is when you buy pop in a 2 liter it still will taste like a pop from a 2 liter no matter what you rebottle it in. If you "make your own pop" its just like the fountain at any resteraunt/theater and will taste like a real glass bottled drink. Dunno how old everyone is but I recall glass and Its Much better tasting then cans or 2 liters :-)

Finally yes when you go to MCdonalds your being ripped off when you pay 1.15 for a pop, a funny tidbit Soda pop is the highest profit money maker for any restaurant, and the Movie theaters prices get real LOL

Hopefully I haven't bord everyone with this :-) have fun and reply if you have any other questions concerns or tell me my math skills stink........LOL

Guess I will jump on the wagon here too and kick up this old thread.

I am pretty fortunate that I live only a couple hours from the Dr Pepper Bottling Company in West Jefferson NC.  They bottle about 25 - 50 flavors (depending on demand) in glass bottles.  My in laws run a summer time produce market with one of my machines in it.  So in the summer, we make a trip about once a month and get a pick-up load.

In my machines I usually keep:
Nehi - Grape and Orange 10 oz Glass
Crush Grape, Strawberry & Orange 10 oz glass
Dr Pepper  Diet Dr. P 10 oz glass
Diet and regular Mt Dew  10 oz glass
Coke and Diet Coke 8 oz glass
RC Cola 10 oz glass
Welch’s grape
Assorted non name brands

The Cokes and Crush you can get at Sam's Club for about 9.00 - 11.00 dollars per case of 24

The others from the bottler cost me 14.50 a case

Also just started keeping some Cheerwine, they are headquartered about 15 minutes from me and have really put a lot of glass bottles out lately.  I noticed in the bookstore on campus where I teach that several glass bottles from West Jefferson have made an appearance and seem to be staging a comeback.

I would really love some pepsi in glass bottles.  I can find the little short fat ones but not the long necks.  Anyone know of anywhere to get some?

Jeff

Mexican Pepsi is available in  the 355ml (12 oz) bottles. You may try your local Mexican restuarants. Jungle Jims in fairfield Oh has them for $1.29 a bottle. A little pricey, but the pure cane sugar will make you realize it is worth it.

I've seen people discussing Cherrywine, but what does it taste like?  Cherry juice?

The UPS guy delivered some soda for me from PA on Friday.  Some Birch Beer from Kuntztown Bottling Works.  Pretty good.

I think that the next thing I'm going to try is some Root Beer from Point Brewery (Stevens Point, WI).  It is sweetened with sugar and honey.  Sounds interesting.  Any of you "Northerners" try this before?

How much was the shipping on the birch beer?

Cheerwine doesn't taste like cherry juice.  I think it is closer to, but not the same as a Dr. Pepper.  We had lunch/dinner yesterday at Old Dominion brewery in Ashburn, VA. Their root beer is made from sugar and sweetened with honey.

Red Rock Cola is decent, Dan V is right it's alot like RC but smoother.  Red Rock Ginger is one of my favorites though.  It's alot like Vernors was before they started tinkering with the formula.  Real spicy with a bite that takes your breath away.  Not as crazy hot as Bleinhein's but nice and spicy.
