Why did you have to post this. Now I can't get it out of my head.  :darn:

You'd think if he really thought is was worth five figures he'd put some dough into fixing the cooling leak.  :glare:

He said he has an offer over 10K. Still sounds like double what its worth.

$15k was the down payment on our new car.

That being said it's still a cool looking machine

If someone wants to give +$10K for it, more power to them. I think that's a ridiculous price but whatever, not my money. Surely they can afford to have the cooling leak fixed if they want.

Wow... like to know how they came upon that one... in the back of a old general store, or passed down through family...
amazing shape for what it is and age. Great survivor.

What should it be worth? This thing is rare, rare. No sales history and is in great shape. I can't afford it either but I'm not going to say it's not worth between $10-$15K because I think it is.

Because of how rare it is, and no recent sales of a machine like this, I would say the value is worth what someone will ultimately pay for it.  Is any machine we own worth what it is? Well, you can argue that they are worth what they are because that's what people are willing to pay for them (did I just argue with myself there lol).

Is this  machine priceless?  By no means no... it's just price unknown right now.  Even if someone pays 15k for it, it doesn't mean that the next one that ever comes up is worth 15k.  All it means is that one person was willing to pay that.  Is there another 15k buyer out there? If so, then a pattern emerges and we could then say it worth X.

Either way, it's a great rare machine, one that I would love to own, but I love my life more.  I would be dead if I payed 15k for this....  my wife can attest to that.

I did see two similar ones sold on live auctioneers. One is just an ice chest version from Schmidt museum sold for 2100 and a refrigerated version that sold for 2600 but wasn't the vend top style. I think it's probably in the 5000-7500 range but when their aren't many for sale ask what you want. You just may get it.

Well he has the offer option.. that's smart and probably the way it will go... He's testing the waters to see what it's worth... hope
if it sells we can find out some how... If I was a strict Coca-Cola collector that would be a piece to have.

Yes the refrigerated one in the schmidt auction was similar to this one and it was right at the $2500 mark like Seth said.  So is this one worth 15K???  If it was that valuable then I am sure that a collector at the schmidt auction would have snapped it up.  Just my 2 cents, but it is a very nice looking piece.

Could be a "head fake", put five figures on it, get someone maybe to offer him $3000 thinking they'd get a deal. If he's claiming he's had an offer over $10K, that's not likely.

Post by: sc1101 on December 01, 2013, 09:10:49 pm
I'm going along with you on this one. I think he threw up a bogus "buy it now" to see what happens. If your not sure what something is worth start high and go from there. Not a bad strategy.
If someone hits the buy it now at 15,000 in the end he will probably put 10,000 in his pocket after all the ebay fee's.   He might as well take the offer he has now.

Title: Re: Very cool Glascock cooler!
Post by: sc1101 on December 01, 2013, 09:22:26 pm
Then again if he would take 3000.00 It would be mine.  Seriously though It makes me not even want to make an offer after I hear "someone will give me 10,000". To me that means I'm taking nothing less which is ok if there's a real offer. Now if he doesn't and wants serious offers then that's a bad strategy because he may have just scared away a real buyer.

If I had a spare 15K, I'd think I'd put it toward an RC81. Or a Vendo 39, and pocket the change

I second that Leonard! I would love to have a deluxe if only they were more reasonable. Nice collection of Glascock's you have there. I do agree the deluxe would have looked good in there next to all those. I love the Glascock's color combo of green and red it just goes great together.

Well he ended the auction early so either he sold it or pulled it to make it look like he had an offer.

He must have sold it. He said he had someone coming to look at it this week. Good for him. Seemed like a nice guy.

The Glascock Deluxe is one of my favorites of the old style cooler.  If that one sold for $15K, I think I am going to fire up the DeLorean.  At an original price of $36.00 for a new one back in the 30's that is better appreciation than most other investments!  Great Scott!

I would also love to have one of the Glascock Portables with the spoked wheels for neighborhood parties!

Another one, albeit crispy one, just popped up on Ebay in VA, $3800 BIN

OMG I want that. However I'm a little confused because all the deluxe models I've seen have a completely different lid system. I think that may be a lid off of a standard model but a deluxe lower cabinet. Still awesome it survived.

Then again I take that back. The standard has smaller dimensions. I just found this one that's the same sold for 2100.00 in better condition. http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/12296317_coca-cola-glascock-deluxe-variation-floor-cooler

It is great. I was expecting alot worse. There is only surface rust and the fan motor still spins by hand but wires are toast. It is complete and unmolested exactly as he told me. The guy I bought it from said it came from a multi genoration family store in a town of 800 people in Virginia. It was out back of store in a storage shed for the past 50 years.

It looks so much better in your pictures Seth, great score!  :happydrinkers:

On no other machine does the compressor show such prominence, I can't wait to see this one restored.

Seth,

  I hate You !!!
Just Kidding !! Great Score!!! As I said once before I was trying to get the collection of Glasscocks But gave up due to the cost of the model you just got .

Wonder WHO's doing the compressor work !!!   Maybe KEN ???

I know Glen anything looks better then his picture of it covered by a tarp. Lol. I just felt I had to save it before he left it sitting under that tarp for 5 years.  John, Of course I wasn't going to pass that up, especially on my birthday.
Sorry Leonard!  I must admit it would look awesome along with your collection. I'm sure one will turn up somewhere.  When I get to restoring the compressor I'm sure I will need Ken's help. He is the man when it comes to things like this.

Great Birthday piece for you Seth.  The machines are addictive just like the signs that I collect and now that I have seen this Glasscock cooler I feel like I may need one in the future as well!  Can't wait to see the photos.  How long does it take to restore a cooler like that?

Nice buy Seth!
I have only seen a few of these coolers through the years. Can't wait to see it restored!

Title: Re: Very cool Glascock cooler!
Post by: sc1101 on May 29, 2014, 06:56:48 pm
Thanks guys. I'm not sure exactly how long it will take but I would assume with all the jobs they have going I would think at least 6-8 months. It's much bigger then my countertop cooler and that took them about 4 months. I have so many things with them getting restored they will probably shoot me if I drop this off also. I may wait till I get one back to drop this off. I'm looking forward to it though.

I thought you would be sending the base to the powdercoater, then only the signs and the lids to the painter?

Post by: sc1101 on May 29, 2014, 09:09:00 pm
My counter top looks good painted so I think I will go the same route. I know the powder coating is durable but question which would look better.

The guy was from Big Island. Not sure if that's the town he got it from though. Sounded like it was a close by pick.
