Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 01, 2005, 01:05:21 pm Hi guys,
I am starting this thread to list vintage Coke machine models seen in movies, tv, etc. I thought of this while I was Googling "Coke Machine" images and stumbled across some video captures (still photos) from the old Monkees movie, "Head". Now I'm not a Monkees fan (though I enjoyed the show when I was a little kid) and have never seen that movie, but I thought it was cool that (according to the stills) there was a scene inwhich Mickey is dying of thirst in the desert and stumbles upon a Vendo 144, to which it looks like he can't get a Coke. There are about 4 stills here: http://www.monkee-mania.com/Head/HeadPics1.html Here's one of them: Please add any fun media sightings. This could be fun! Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 07, 2005, 04:09:52 pm O.k., then I guess I will go it alone.
This next one wasn't a vintage machine, but: In the film, "21 Grams", fledgling caddy Benicio Del Toro gets fired after dropping some golf clubs in front of a Coke machine. The man who fires him then offers to buy him a Diet Coke. Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: Bob K on February 07, 2005, 05:57:57 pm I was watching "The Nutty Professor" with Jerry Lewis (yeah, I know...), and right outside his office is a big tall Royal Crown machine. I haven't figured out what model yet...
Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 07, 2005, 06:11:40 pm Great contribution Bob!
I really appreciate it! Maybe you could play it again, pause it and take a digital photo of the screen? Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: Eric on February 08, 2005, 09:50:28 am Devil With a Blue Dress starring Denzel Washington has a Vendo 39 and a Westinghouse Master.
Tucker you catch a image of a Vendo 83 in a gas station Back to the Future Michael J. Fox stops to enjoy a bottle of Pepsi from a Pespi Jacobs but needs help finding how to open it. There was a contest years back in Club Soda on naming movies and shows that used a cooler or machine. and at the time I knew of 12 and I didn't even win. Movies you'd think would like American Graffiti didn't:( And of course there was the Superbowl Commercial Last year with the Vendo 81 Coke and 81 Pepsi. Eric Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: MoonDawg on February 08, 2005, 10:44:10 am PUNCHLINE with Tom Hanks and Sally Field has a Cavalier 72 throughout the movie.
LOVE FIELD with Michelle Pfeifer and Denzel Washington. A Cavalier 96 is in the bus station and a huge Coca Cola porcelin sign outside. Their car breaks down in a small forgotten town and two machines on the porch of the old store One entire episode of Married with Children is filmed in front of an early model 39. Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 08, 2005, 10:56:29 am Wow, thanks guys!
This is fun. Keep 'em coming. If I own any of those movies, I'll snap a pic of them on the screen. Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: Eric on February 08, 2005, 10:58:37 am Speaking of 72 .
In the movie Nell with Jodi Foster there's a 72 in a general store and the old TV show Chico and the man they had a 72 at the garage. Eric Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 08, 2005, 11:07:21 am Ah, "Chico and the Man", that sure takes me back.
Did "Sanford & Son" ever have one? Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: Eric on February 10, 2005, 08:27:44 pm Oh yeah.. forgot... The Drew Cary show... He has a
Coke Bow out master in his kitchen with a genaric soda sign bolted over the embossed Coke. You see it a lot in the show..... Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 11, 2005, 12:16:58 am Well on the Happy days Reunion special last week they were showing clips and one was " the fonz" kicking a drop Cup coke machine that happens to be a APCO like the one thats on this site. Well, I happened to have it recorded on my ReplayTV unit, so I scanned through and paused it for a pic. First of all, they put a sign over the front saying, "Spring Cola" (?!?) to hide the real brand and then if it really was the drop cup model, they did some TV tinkering, because two dark brown glass bottles dropped down at the same time so both the Fonz & Ritchie could have sodas. Here's a screen shot: Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 11, 2005, 12:58:36 pm The two bottles are just starting to come out here in this closeup:

Actually, it wasn't Denzel. It was Dennis Hasbert (President Palmer on "24") back in 1992. After you mentioned it here, I checked and it was to play on Lifetime TV or something, so I had my ReplayTV record it. I scanned through the whole movie, found the two vintage machines, paused and then took pics. Here's the bus station one: Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 11, 2005, 01:04:35 pm And here is the old store/gas station one on the porch. It is a 50's vendo, but not sure which model:
Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 11, 2005, 01:07:12 pm I plan to do the same with the other shows as they pop up on TV. I am presently recording random Drew Carey episodes until I find his machine. Keep the mentions coming.
Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 11, 2005, 04:47:54 pm O.k., despite that it's an ugly 1980's machine and Pepsi <<shudder>> (I am a Coke only guy), I thought I'd include this shot from Tom Hanks in chapter 15 of "Big" in his cool Manhattan loft apartment:

This is a vendo 80. Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: vendobaldtops on February 12, 2005, 09:15:13 pm I love these threads...here is my contribution:
1) Texas Chainsaw Massacre - kid vends a coke out of a Vendo 81 at the gas station (before Leatherface gets to em) 2) Thunderhear with Val Kilmer as an FBI guy investigating a murder on an Indian Reservation - Cavalier 72 3) The Natural - Robert Redford meets Glen Close in a 1920-30's candy store..but at the top of the window, you can see the 1960s Fishtail decals! 4) The Sting - Also with Robert Redford has a big porcelain 1930s sign - Drug Store or Luncheonette...can't remember 5) Rebel Without a Cause - James Dean drunk at the police station..looks through the peep hole and you can see the Cavalier machine with the ships wheel...33? 6) Bullit with Steve McQueen....investigating a hoimicaide at a San Francisco hotel...there is a 1960s square corner 7) Superfly - Blackploitation film of the early 70s...towards the end, Superfly walks out of a deli and you see a nice fishtail flange. Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: Eric on February 12, 2005, 09:26:52 pm Pearl Harbor There's a Coke Westinghouse on the base and there's also a Pepsi (maybe Coke) vmc 33?
Notice the double dot bottles they drink out of with a straw and. After the attack the two guys give blood and (this is said to have really happened)They run out of bottle for blood and they use Coke bottles. Eric Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: Bob K on February 12, 2005, 09:41:50 pm Here's the Royal Crown square-top from The Nutty Professor. You never get a clear shot of it. RC must have been a sponsor as a Royal Crown delivery truck is clearly shown in another scene. This machine looks pretty tall.
Here's one shot: and another showing the side graphics: Talk about product placement... Can anybody make out the model? Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 13, 2005, 09:41:33 am Thanks for the movie titles guys. I will keep adding screen captures. I will post the "Back To The Future" one later today.
Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: MoonDawg on February 13, 2005, 12:38:48 pm The producers of Pearl Harbor came to me looking for an old Coke machine, but I didn't have anything from that early time era
I thought they said they were going to blow it up. Did they? Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 13, 2005, 02:16:45 pm Cool!
I don't think they blew one up. Did they use this one?: Heehee Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: Eric on February 13, 2005, 05:38:46 pm I'll have to watch it again but I don't remember any soda machine getting messed up
in Pearl Harbor... Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 14, 2005, 02:14:35 pm
Eric, is this the Coke machine you were referring to? If so, which model is this Coke cooler? Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: Eric on February 14, 2005, 02:18:43 pm Yeah that's it.... It looks like a westinghouse... But it has the coin mech to the
right side? Jim, or anybody, what model is it? Eric Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 14, 2005, 02:20:27 pm
I couldn't see the machine in that scene at all. It was just a small dark corner on the TV screen. But then I remembered that you could probably see it in a movie's widescreen (16:9) aspect ratio, but not on my TV's (4:3) ratio. Oh well, sometime I'll rent the widescreen DVD and then re-post the photo. Boy did Pepsi have MAJOR product placement. The might as well have called the film, "Pepsi Presents: Back To The Future". I remember there was a lot of co-marketing going on between this movie and Pepsi. MJF appeared in a lot of Pepsi ads at the time, too. Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 15, 2005, 10:10:37 am
Hi guys, I scanned through a few more Drew Carey episodes that I recorded and found this great shot of the cooler from another angle. Looks cool. Anyone have any info now? Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 15, 2005, 03:24:15 pm Come on Jim, you'e great at calling these things.
Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 16, 2005, 01:08:54 am I'm just about positive that there will be a vintage Coke machine in the film, "The Notebook" because most of it takes place in the 1950's, etc. I just bought the DVD for my wife for Valentines Day, so I will scan it soon.
Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: Eric on February 16, 2005, 08:52:58 am Yep! We just got it for Valentines Day too! There's a Westinghouse Jr. in the background during their walk down the street! Some great signs too! Great movie! I even cried...I..mean
I got something in my eyes!..... Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 16, 2005, 09:40:49 am I just knew that I vaguely remembered at least one old machine in that movie. And that was before my addiction to vintage Coke machines began.
That's weird, I got that same something in my eyes when we saw it in the theater last summer. Theaters and homes need better air filters. Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: Jim on February 16, 2005, 07:00:04 pm Sorry for the delay...
I'm leaning toward a Westinghouse WE-6 for the Drew Carey Show machine. Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 22, 2005, 12:01:29 pm
So I recorded "The Sting" and while there were a few Coca-Cola signs and a Hires sign, I want to keep this thread for vintage machines only, so after scanning the whole movie, luckily I saw an old Dole "Coca-Cola" soda fountain at the drug store where the bad guys would get their racing tip phone calls. This was the best shot of it possible, because they quickly panned right past it a few times: Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 22, 2005, 12:06:17 pm
Here's the view (James dean's POV) through the detective's office peep hole (great memory vendobaldtops) Thurston Howell/Mr. Magoo is yelling at his wife, but it's not Lovey. Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 22, 2005, 12:07:36 pm Here is another shot of it. But I don't know which is more beautiful, Natalie Wood or the machine...
Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: Eric on February 22, 2005, 02:14:40 pm The machine would be less maitenance.....:D
Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on February 22, 2005, 02:34:34 pm heh heh.:D
Title: Coke machines sightings in the media Post by: on March 04, 2005, 12:44:49 am The wife and I went to "Million Dollar Baby" in the theaters tonight. In the boxing gym in the background in MANY shots, you can see a Coke slider-style cooler, but it looks to be circa 1970s or 1980s. It wasn't the most attractive model, but great product placement for Coke. Anyone else see it?
