Title: Latest weekend project with my son... Post by: collecture on October 26, 2013, 01:26:36 pm My oldest son is taking part in a Battle of Gettysburg reenactment. The whole 7th grade is involved as part of their Social Studies class. One project was to make a replica of a Civil War era gun to use in battle out of wood. So last weekend we pulled out the tools. I used the band saw to cut out the rough shape and the router to shape the barrel. Some extra shaping was done by hand with wood carving tools, a Micro Planer and the Dremel. A little belt sanding, some paint, varnish. Added a brass name plate and voila!
It was a fun project to do with him! Oh....since I have been into making springs, I embedded a spring in the hammer so it popped back. He said he was the only one to have that feature! Title: Re: Latest weekend project with my son... Post by: cola62 on October 26, 2013, 08:02:18 pm Great Job, I am surprised a school would be a part of anything with guns. They are so anal now about anything related to violence. I read where an autistic child was expelled from school for drawing a cartoon bomb. A first grader was also suspended for bringing a GI Joe 2 inch plastic gun to school. What a bunch of overreacting idiots.

Great Job, I am surprised a school would be a part of anything with guns. Well they gave specific instructions like he could not ride the bus with it. He had to be dropped off the day of his grade for it and he could not leave it at school. It had to be constructed from wood, but you could use a nail or screw here and there though. During the reenactment, he will have to "check" it in prior to participating.BTW - can anybody ID what gun we made? Title: Re: Latest weekend project with my son... Title: Re: Latest weekend project with my son... Post by: collecture on October 27, 2013, 12:45:53 am I know you all like old things and here is my band saw.
It is a 1940's 78 1/2" Montgomery Ward brand. The pulley motor is original as well. I bought it, a scroll saw and bench grinder for $100. The band saw came with 6-7 blades and the portable stand it is mounted on. I haven't used it much, but it works like a champ. Title: Re: Latest weekend project with my son... Post by: SelVend 7 up on October 27, 2013, 05:20:14 am Great, great job. I'm also going with the Spencer.......probably in .56 but believe .50 was an option later on. I'm glad to see some schools still appreciate our history........regardless of whether or not it involves firearms. Cool band saw too. The don't make 'em like that anymore. |
