I like the transitional machines, I'd say $500-600 would be fair

I could probably get it for $300

Here's another one that sold earlier this year, better shape but it'll give you a good idea of worth: http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-1050s-Vendo-Vendorlator-VF56E-SA-Embossed-7UP-Soda-Pop-Vending-Machine-/251247182316?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a7f7fc1ec&nma=true&si=7mLVh9Zp5s9V7UUdgBu5eONoDtk%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

That one only went for $619 and it would take more than another $300 to make this one close to that one.  I may have to pass...I don't really like it enough to keep.

Thank You for the quick reply...

Should I take the shelves out before laying it down flat and I guess anything else that is loose.....?  I know not to turn it on until it sits up right for 24 hours....I will re-wire it anyway so that part is not an issue....I think it's missing 1 shelf. The guy says it's not rusted thru anywhere including the door.  Glad to have a winter project to work on because we are bringing the Vendo 80 up to the big house.

Auto-body places should have it - if not, I believe you can buy it on eBay.  I've never used it, but wow... just wow.

In Cincinnati your local O'Reilly auto parts store can get it for you in 24 hours.

I said it was growing on me....I sure would like a nice "How to..." when it come to using the rustmort....?  I'll search here and on the web...Maybe there is even a nice how to video on youtube....If I find one I'll post the link here....If I don't I'll make one when I'm thru even if it's titled....."How not to use rustmort..."

Thanks Glen for giving that little push I needed to go ahead and get this machine....It just worked out well that this guy really likes Coke stuff in his shop, so the trade worked out great....I got $140 in this one as it sits in my shop.

The door looks solid as does the rest of the machine...Worst rust on it is by the ID plate....Even the liner looks good.....There is one small hole in the catch basin where the screw for the top cooling unit would have been.

I'm just happy to have a new project to work on....

Here are a few pics after I got it home.....It fit nice in the back of my HHR.

WOW....

Wow is right, that is quite the transformation!

Title: Re: 7UP square top big coin door....?
Post by: MoonDawg on August 30, 2013, 07:50:08 am
A video of your transformation would be great!  First, al lot of that surface will clean with soap and water

The rustmort is made for bodywork, to pull rust to the surface and kill it. On white surfaces you will draw it to the surface and rinse it off.

Best way is to spray it on evenly, scrub on the darker areas while letting the chemical work. Rinse, dry and spray again where needed.

Try out the back first, don't let it run down dry surfaces, make sure it is sprayed evenly then rinsed. Keep a close eye on decals.

I don't know if this will be a winter project, as fast as you have been moving on this thing,it will be ready next weekend.

Well here it sits besides it's big brother in the shed....I had to make room even though it's real small.  What kind of screw driver or bit do I need for these screws, I've never seen any like these....? See 2nd pic.

It's a 5/32" clutch head screw, you can find the bits at the hardware store, I've had better luck finding them at small stores.

If you have an Ace hardware they have them... That's a great machine I had one of those....
ST they were the beginning of a new era.... Hope it cleans up well for you!

If you have a Harbor Freight Tools, they sell a "security bit" set for about ten bucks.  Comes with that clutch-head driver in several sizes plus a lot of other odd bits.  Very handy to have on the shelf in the garage.

Well the wiring is brittle but I didn't see any places where it was touching so I got brave and plunged it in....I only let it run for 2 or 3 minutes....Both fans run, the compressor kicked on and the upper coils were getting cold....No way was I gonna leave it on long enough to actually cool the box down...It has to have a rewire first.

Is this machine really post 1960...?

I do have a question about the vend mechanism....See pic below.

What function does this switch do....?   Unless it's a manual vend switch I can't see anything that would activate it....? It's the red one on the left I'm talking about.

It (the switch shown in the prior post) operates the CREM coils in the coinmech.  basically it prevents the machine from accepting any coins until the bottle from the prior sale is pulled from the rack ( and in doing so resets the rack)

Title: Re: 7UP square top big coin door....?
Post by: wee on September 01, 2013, 05:55:12 pm
Is there something missing or broken....? Because I don't see anything that would activate it. I didn't try to get it to vend when it was plugged up because I had already taken the door off...But when the solenoid is pulled down it will vend and will only vend once till it's pulled again, which I guess is how it works.

Title: Re: 7UP square top big coin door....?
Post by: johnieG on September 01, 2013, 08:30:02 pm
Yep.  Now that you mentioned it & I looked closer at your picture, the pin that hits the little lever on the switch is broken off!  you can see were it was spot welded to the link/lever that slides back & forth to pull in the latching mechanism when the solenoid gets pulsed. it's a pretty easy fix to drill the link & install a 1" long #6/28 threaded rod or bolt & a nut to hold it in place..

These clutch head screws are a real pain....I won't put the machine back together with them.  The bit seems too tight I have to tap it in or I'm afraid I will strip them out. Hope to get the cooling unit out while tinkering around in the shed today.

The only thing I found using the rustmort, I sprayed it on the white librally and it ran down on the red (coke machine) and left streaking because I left it too long. On the all white, that's not an issue, but be attentive to spray an even coat if possible and keep a closer eye then I did. You may be able to avoid my issue of streaking. It sort of bleached the red out, and lifted the paint in the worst spot.

Rookie mistakes, and all my fault! It's great stuff.

I think I will start at the bottom and work my way up....I'm also thinking about covering the logos with cling wrap....I will do a test first to see how the rustmort reacts to it. I will also see how it reacts to the chrome.

So far I haven't stripped out a screw...Knock on wood.

The cooling rack I built for my Vendo 80 is gonna work great for the 7up.

Be sure to use the correct size & type of bit to remove your clutch head screws. also heat works wonders on rusted screws & bolts to loosen them, but you don't want to swing an open flame near the machines finish & flammable components,

I have used my leather gloves and vise grip pliers & a bolt big enough to just cover the head of the stuck screw , I heat the bolts end up red hot & stick it onto the screws head for about 10-30 seconds, then let it cool & try to back it out, sometimes it takes a few heating/cooling cycles to loosen a stubborn one,  and be aware of where you lay down your "working" tool ( the red-hot bolt) it might tend to set things ablaze.   used this trick on a lot of old car fasteners over the years.

So folks have used a Dremel tool with a cutting disk to cut a slot into a stripped out clutch head to allow a regular screwdriver to turn it out too.

Second what Johnie mentioned about heat - if it won't ruin the finish, the old "smoke wrench" is a great tool to have in your arsenal.  I've had a ton of success using a torch on old rusty car bolts.

I've had some luck with heat/cold cycling using the torch, followed by hitting it with some water or some spray stuff called "Cold Coat" designed as a heat block for sweating pipes.

Thank You...It looks much better in photos than it does in person....Paint is a 20 footer at best.
Spent sometime over the holiday weekend cleaning and going over all the pics I saved when I first started working on it.....Got all the electrical connections and wiring finished....I just got to get the wires back in the power block.

It didn't clean up as well as I had hoped but I just don't want to spend the time repainting everything.

Has the market changed over the last 4 years....?

Oh well....Just my luck.  It won't be restored as far as looks go but it should run like new.  I'm surprised with all the rage on ratrods that these older machines haven't taken off. I think every shop needs one. My original plan was to actually take this machine to the local car show when I got it finished to try to sell it, too late now car show season is already over.

Thank You for the offer.....I'm going to make a list of parts and pieces that would be needed if the next owner wanted to take the restoration to the next level. Does anyone know how the 7UP logos were done....?  They remind me of the decals you put on model cars, but maybe they are just painted on.

I finished it up, the coin mech even works....Well I'm not sure if it will make change or not but it will vend with a quarter dropped in.  It cools great, down to 30 deg and it cycles the compressor just fine.  It even has keys. I'm not sure yet what I'm gonna ask for it....?  It would look good in the game room and I might just keep it.
