Title: Cavalier 96 - cant decide
Post by: Ezra on August 18, 2013, 01:38:41 pm
Guys,

Found this Cav 96 and it is fairly beat.  Any comments on the most you'd pay? Would you try to restore it or part it out. Note its missing coin mech. But has everything else.

Thank You

Looks rough, unless you can get it for really cheap I'd stay away. Looks more like a parts machine. As for restoring it even if you got the machine for free, given a proper restoration it would be hard to get your money back. I'd say it's a $300-$400 machine, tops.

Agreed, I've seen these in good condition pop up for $700-$900 lately. I wouldn't go more then $300.

Since it must be restored anyway, I'm waiting for the guy who tackles the job of turning a 96 into a 72.

He would remove the liners and make his first cut just above the coin door, all around the machine.

Then he removes the 6" of excess metal just below the embossed letters, all the way around.

Weld the top to the bottom, shorten the bottle door and lookout Rick!   :happydrinkers:

Are you joking  or serious?  It can be had for $400.  I have a nice 72 to model it after, just need a 72 ID plate . Glen to the rescue again???

Glens a fairly serious guy.  Think Dirty Harry but for soda machines.  It's 10.25 inches btw that would have to come off. Just checked Jeff's book.

Ah, I think Glen was kidding......

Not at all! There is a 1" gap on a 72 between the bottom of the the embossed letters and the top of the coin door.
Metal has been rolled there and will be ideal to weld onto without warpage. The entire door is solid across and should absorb the heat from a continuious weld easily.

But the body will be more difficult as a continuous weld heats and contracts the sheet metal way too much. So I would make my cut where I planned on breaking the red and white colors. There multiple spotwelds could be used to tack sheetmetal together, this line will be covered by a chrome divider strip when done. Hinges need to be moved.

If I owned a welding shop, I would try it, but farming it out could get cost prohibitive.

In that case lets go shorter and make the first Cavalier 56.

Seriously Dude........you are contemplating a job no one has ever done before, and the ID tag is the only thing holding you back?   :help:

If our suppliers don't make them, then an engraving shop should be able to copy yours.

I vote for the first Cav 96 Orange Crush. Now that would be cool. I have seen Alan H. do one into Pepsi and it was really neat.  :upside:
