Title: Advice needed for cutting license plates
Post by: JimFromSTL on June 15, 2013, 07:02:09 pm
So, I bought one of these http://www.ebay.com/itm/SET-OF-USA-LICENSE-PLATES-FROM-ALL-50-STATES-BONUS-PLATE-/251208078129?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a7d2b1331

to make one of these : http://www.ebay.com/itm/3D-USA-LICENSE-PLATE-MAP-ART-ALL-50-STATES-Pub-Bar-Art-/281118008571?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4173f064fb

What type of tool do you guys think will handle this best?  A scroll saw with a metal cutting blade was my guess.

A good set of tin snips.

A metal cutting bandsaw would be best IMO but a scroll saw could be used as long as nothing binds when cutting with it.

Band saw would be quick and make better cuts...

That looks fantastic. If only I had a little wall space.

Maybe you don't need so many licenceplates for a UK map

Anyhow i would try to use a very fine-toth blade in the bandsaw for avoid ugly edge on the thin plates.
Don't forget to post pictures if you build that cool map and also remember that texas needs two plates (as shown on the picture)

Cool project!

But when did Hawaii move next to Florida and Alaska next to Cali?

I think they are just posing for their picture for the map of the united states that they use in schools  (at least ours always had Alaska and Hawaii next to each other since it was a map to only show the states and they did not want to put canada or mexico on the map)

You would need a scroll saw to cut out Alaska and Hawaii.

That is really cool.  The map is awesome but looks like an aweful lot of work.

I found a box of license plates years ago in an antique shop; two sets of plates from 1931 thru 1964 with a pile of miscellaneous non matching ones from 1908 thru 1930.  I had no idea what I was going to do with them at the time, but there were over 60 plates that I paid well under $100.  The collector in me told me that I just had to buy them.

You could take the easy way out & make a border around a room like I did.  I use them to cover a wire chase in my garage/office.

I thought I would post a picture of the project before it disappears from Ebay.

It really looks cool!  I say go for it!!!
