Title: Coke Sign - What Do You Think?
Post by: Eric on May 03, 2013, 06:13:10 pm
Just found this on ebay... What do you guys think... the lettering, type face, layout... looks like someone took a old sign and repainted it
Coca-Cola has uneven edges and thickness and the date is painted in black?....
I would think buyer beware...

It looks way to perfect to me.

the word DRINK.. the N doesn't look the others on other button signs too wide and the word FOR the R looks off... and again the Coca-Cola logo
is wavy... Thanks Halehouse, never seen the black date before... good to know... did you see his other button? Art looks poor on that too...

I see what you mean about DRINK the letters appear to be larger than on others. Not to say it's not real but I would have it checked before buying to be sure. Here is a pic of mine.

I agree with Eric  that the lettering is not consistent with Coke's standards of the time.
Trade mark was usually followed by the letter "R" with a circle around it.
Every button I have seen has the CC script directly in the center.
Pricing would have been on a sign above a display rack and subject to change, why would Coke use a porcelin button?
The "cent" symbol is wrong.

The more i look at it, the more I think it is a button that was redone

I think it's a neat idea... If I could find a rough button at a decent price (people think the rough ones are priceless too)
I'd redo one to hang on the wall... Course by the time you get the vinyl masking, paint and time you could almost buy a mint one!

This one the CC logo is higher and off to the right a little and just so much going on in it and all the flaws in
it makes me think someone took a rough one and redid it... probably painted it white,  laid down a vinyl masking, shot the red
and then peeled off the vinyl... I've seen other buttons restored like this.... this one just has too many red flags to me
and I thought I'd post this to let you guys know you really got watch stuff out there...
I think with someone taking their time... getting a clean logo and correct type faces.. you wouldn't be able to tell.

Be careful out there...

The button it self is right, but the lettering is not, as noted above.

The Seller is from Germany, and note they say that it was a Porcelain button.. to my understanding, sign makers who made 16" buttons for Coke in the US never made them in porcelain.. the only Porcelain buttons you find are overseas items and not too many,

Yes there are 24, 36 and 48 Porcelain buttons but not 16".

the other red flag is location, Germany is known for many reproductions in porcelain..  there are a ton of gas /oil signs that are coming from over there that are fakes.

so yes buyer be ware...  I think I have seen this same sign sell a few times before on ebay in the past.. so I'm sure they made a run of them and are spacing them out..

Neat sign, Yes... real... No

my 2.5 cents worth!
