Title: Dime-Awake Coin-op Alarm Clock Post by: tkaz on April 23, 2013, 06:41:48 pm I came across this in a local antique shop today, pretty neat little coin-op, found some info on it through a Google Books search in Popular Mechanics.

Title: Re: Dime-Awake Coin-op Alarm Clock Post by: BrianS on April 24, 2013, 12:34:28 am I really like that clock. I think I would be going back to the shop to keep an eye on that one.
Title: Re: Dime-Awake Coin-op Alarm Clock Post by: davethebirdman on April 24, 2013, 04:44:02 am $175.00 is a good price for that clock (providing they work) . I have been watching them on eBay for a long time now and like everything they have been going up in price. Title: Re: Dime-Awake Coin-op Alarm Clock Post by: tkaz on April 24, 2013, 11:12:41 am One concern I have is that there is no key with it, how hard are these lock style to pick/rekey?
Title: Re: Dime-Awake Coin-op Alarm Clock Post by: kbareit on April 24, 2013, 12:07:46 pm That's pretty neat. I doubt I would have used it back in the day, who wants to pay to be woke up?

Title: Re: Dime-Awake Coin-op Alarm Clock Post by: tkaz on April 24, 2013, 07:27:01 pm On one shoulder, I have a nice money savings conscience...on the other is the SMC forums!
So I went back today to see if the clock had the key, and sure enough it was in the locked case next to it. I tested it out with a dime and the alarm came on when the clock hit the right time, had to buy it at that point! Pretty neat little item, very simple device to accept the dime, it simply moves aside a small lever that allows the plunger to pull up and set the alarm. Nothing there to reject slugs, not that people were looking to trick a $.10 item to wake them up in the morning. I'll see if I can get a video of it working. The clock face has a small amount of grime on the inside around 8 o'clock, but it should just pull off so I can clean it. Title: Re: Dime-Awake Coin-op Alarm Clock Post by: davethebirdman on April 25, 2013, 01:26:50 am Well done... Now what you need is the radio that sat alongside it in the motel room. Dahlberg make them. Here's one on eBay at the moment... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1950s-Vintage-Dahlberg-Pillow-Speaker-Mint-Green-Tabletop-Vacuum-Tube-Radio-/160927412182?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2578056fd6 I'd have one of those clocks if it wasn't for the Hz issue.... Title: Re: Dime-Awake Coin-op Alarm Clock Post by: tkaz on April 25, 2013, 11:54:36 am I was able to clean out the rust stain on the clock face and pull out the Roy Rogers comic card this morning. I'm going to put together a small instructions card from some of the other examples I have seen on the web, I think that'll finish it off. (Got that done too!)

Title: Re: Dime-Awake Coin-op Alarm Clock Post by: Creighton on April 26, 2013, 01:53:21 pm Great Job!!
That was expensive to make back in the day. Anyway to have it work like a regular clock? Had never seen such a thing. Thanks. Creighton Title: Re: Dime-Awake Coin-op Alarm Clock Post by: tkaz on April 26, 2013, 02:13:38 pm Creighton, it works like a regular clock when plugged in, the alarm hand is the white one that is about 6 o'clock in the photo. You set that hand to the approximate time and insert the dime to get the alarm to work.

Title: Re: Dime-Awake Coin-op Alarm Clock Post by: tkaz on January 25, 2014, 06:07:30 pm Well, I sold the first clock I bought for more than double what I paid for it, so I couldn't resist buying another one in non-working condition. The cord was cut and the clock mechanism was for the most part seized up. I was able to pull it all apart, clean up the gears and eventually the clock starting working. Alarm kicks off just as expected. I just need to pickup a replacement gear and chain for the setting of the alarm, but that shouldn't be too hard.
Cool little clocks, I let it run all night and it kept perfect time. Title: Re: Dime-Awake Coin-op Alarm Clock Post by: HowDueYouDue on January 25, 2014, 06:24:27 pm Congrats on the profit and finding another one that works
