Title: Long week but a good score Post by: mznb1u on April 04, 2013, 10:30:30 pm I have been on the road since Tuesday morning and by the time I go home today, I had logged about 1400 miles this week. My travels took me to Canton, OH, Baltimore OH, Columbus, OH and a nice long 45 minute delay :darn: in Kenton, OH while I waited for a stopped freight train to move. Also, all over west and northern Michigan. My detour to Baltimore, OH was to check out a machine that I spotted on CL over the weekend. I was pretty certain that I was going to buy it and was able to get the seller to pull the ad. I was willing to pay his asking price--not as good of a deal a MaineT got on the Pepsi but a very fair price given the rarity of this machine.
Well, I added another rare Stoner to my collection. This one is an older restoration and the machine if fully functional except for it is missing the coin mech but I can pick one of those up. In any event, say hello to my newest little friend--1950 Stoner Junior (technically a 120 according to Slider Bob) complete with gum/mint wheel! The guy I bought it from builds custom chassis' for hot rods and older model restorations. He had a lot of cool stuff at his shop and was a very nice guy. As the story goes, he got the machine from a friend who had bought a batch of Stoners about 20+ years ago. He did a pretty nice restoration and had the machine on display in his shop. It has a couple of minor dings but overall, I would put it at about an 8.5 out of 10. It is a little dusty but with a quick wiping down, it will be ready to move right into the game room and fill with candy. I may remove the mirror from the base which is actually plexi and not glass--to me that addition of a mirror is like the Coke bottle with the hand on an overdone soda machine restoration. He did an interesting job restoring the mirror for the top. That is the original mirror because he could not find anyone local to cut a custom mirror for him. So he removed all of the old silver from the old mirror and then placed a piece of polished stainless behind the glass! You can actually see yourself in it but it looks a bit hazy--kind of like an old miror. The rest of the machine is straight and working. This makes two of this particular model in my collection. My other one is a 1949 but the exact same machine. I am pretty stoked about this one because it is ready to display and use! On to the pictures. Too tired to bring it in to the house. Will post a better one when I get it into the house and put together. Apologies to the Ohio Underground for picking one out of your backyard as I do not wish for there to be trouble between the families! You talk about vengance. Is vengance going to bring a Stoner back to you or my Stoner to me? I forgo the vengance of my Stoner. But my youngest Stoner had to leave this country because of this Sollozzo business. So now I have to make arrangments to bring it back safely cleared of all these false charges. But I'm a supersticious man. And if some unlucky accident should befall it, if it should be shot in the mirror by a police officer, or if it should hang itself in it's jail cell, or if it is struck by a bolt of lightning... *then I'm going to blame some of the people in this room*... and that, I do not forgive. But, that aside, let say that I swear, on the souls of my grandchildren, that I will not be the one to break the peace we have made here today. 8) 8) :drinking: Tim :drinking: Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: sc1101 on April 04, 2013, 10:47:13 pm Well at least you came home with something good after all that traveling.

Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: halehouse on April 04, 2013, 11:44:22 pm Wow. 1400 miles in one week! We don't put that on two cars in a month. Looks like the detour was worth it. That's a nice Stoner. Take a rest now!

I guess this is the reason that I got held up by the train. :drinking: Tim :drinking: Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: bcharlton on April 05, 2013, 07:45:20 am Bonovox "sleeps with the fishes"

Great score !! You Didn't Even try and Swing By and Visit . 2Hr south west Of Columbus Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: cohammer on April 05, 2013, 09:22:54 am That was a great score but you have to have spent a lot on gas to round up that deal.
Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: Slider-Bob on April 05, 2013, 10:52:29 am Great find Tim...You must have been Jones'in...It's been too long since you bought a machine. You did well!
That last paragraph you wrote thru me for a loop. Huh? What? I must have missed that movie! LOL Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: mznb1u on April 05, 2013, 11:19:42 am That was a great score but you have to have spent a lot on gas to round up that deal. One of the nice things about having a company vehicle and a business reason to be in the area of a find is that it is work related travel. :happydrinkers: I could not do this otherwise. The last thing that I do before I leave on a business trip is check the local CL and see what is out there. I just got lucky on this one because I found it early and the seller was willing to pull the ad. Otherwise, it would be sitting in someone else's garage at this point. :drinking: Tim :drinking: Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: BONOVOX on April 05, 2013, 11:30:17 am Huh? I sleep with the fishies!?? :oh:
Brian... it wasn't me Tim was referring to... at least I hope not! lol. I don't have a stoner, never loked at or for one, nor a real interest in getting one unless it were free. No clue about "leaving the country" but it's easy to blame Canada lol. (and me for that matter as I'm one of a few Canucks here lol) Nice pick up Tim! I like road trips that bring in a haul other than shoes that my wife gets on her road trips lol. Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: kbareit on April 05, 2013, 01:44:53 pm If I knew you'd be in Akron I would have tried to meet up and treat you to lunch. I'm 45 mins from Akron.

Ken, If I had had the time I would have let you know. I had to do a training session in Canton that took a couple housr more than I expected it would and then I had to high-tail it down to Baltimore because the seller was waiting at his business after hours for me. I'll let you know the next time I get down that way. Ed, My Godfather joke (ala the Michigan Mafia) was a little confusing. I was ripping off a line from the movie and altered it to talk about Stoners instead of Michael trying to get back from Italy! We don't want any problems with the Canadian's either--otherwise you might stop sending us Labatt Blue! :drinking: Tim :drinking: :drinking: Tim :drinking: Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: mznb1u on April 05, 2013, 02:47:03 pm The Stoner is in place in the Home Theater Room. It fits rather nicely between two Michigan posters (what else). Now I just have to get out to the store and get some old school candy for it.
I am thinking: Milk Duds Junior Mints Sugar Babies Chuckles Jawbreakers or Lemonheads A few more pictures. :drinking: Tim :drinking: Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: Kilroy on April 05, 2013, 02:54:37 pm A nice find. congrats!
Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: Roadman on April 05, 2013, 03:13:44 pm wow, very nice Tim! Great buy. I've only seen one other photo of a Junior with a gum wheel, Curtis did a restoration. Any board members know of others? This model is probably as rare as your early grade 1941 Stoner Theate
Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: mznb1u on April 05, 2013, 04:01:34 pm wow, very nice Tim! Great buy. I've only seen one other photo of a Junior with a gum wheel, Curtis did a restoration. Any board members know of others? This model is probably as rare as your early grade 1941 Stoner Theate Thanks Roadman! I have only seen five of them over the past 5 years and I am fortunate to own two of them. I know of two other members who have one and I saw the one that Curtis did--I think that was for Jeff Wolfe. Here is a shot of my other one. Still needs new vend glass, a pull and a new locks. The previous owner found this machine in the trash and her boyfriend who worked at a bump shop cleaned it up and repainted it for her. :drinking: Tim :drinking: Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: Creighton on April 05, 2013, 04:32:12 pm Great score!!
Am I correct that a "Bump Shop" be an auto body repair? Never saw the term. Thanks! Creighton Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: BONOVOX on April 05, 2013, 05:25:55 pm Looks great in the man cave!
Kinda looks like Pepsi blue though lol If I ever were to get a stoner, that would be a good one to get because of it's narrow size. Ahh... godfather ref. It flew right over my head.... When I read Brians reaply to it, I immedietly started to think in my head "what did I do the past few months with CL posts of stoners" Phew... last thing I needed was the Mafia of Michigan pouring a new concrete floor in my garage! :happydrinkers: Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: Kilroy on April 05, 2013, 06:34:32 pm Creighton - Yes, "Bump Shop" is an auto body repair shop.
Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: rayg on April 07, 2013, 11:14:37 am Tim,
You are the "STONER MAN" Great find! Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: mznb1u on April 07, 2013, 12:02:35 pm Great score!! Am I correct that a "Bump Shop" be an auto body repair? Never saw the term. Thanks! Creighton Actually, the "Bump Shop" is where Ed is going to wind up if he keeps grabbing nice machines out of Michigan! 8) Just kidding Ed! Of course, Some day, and that day may never come, I will call upon you to do a service for me. But until that day . . . As Kilroy pointed out that is an auto body repair or collision shop as many are called here in the Motor City. My dad always called it the bump shop so that is where I picked it up. Must be a Michigan term. :drinking: Tim :drinking: Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: HowDueYouDue on April 07, 2013, 03:32:06 pm Great find
Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: BONOVOX on April 07, 2013, 06:57:28 pm lol.. What? Where? How?
Actually, I'm giving back to Michigan, and having that machine you sold me (the generic 110) being restored (as we speak I think) by one of the best in your state. So, as much as she's been good to me, I'm paying her back  Although as of late, MI is a little dry with the quality of machines (that I'm noticing) and OH, NY are raising the bar for good finds (for me at least) I'm actually working on getting 2 machines at the same time (from different sellers) from a state that I've never bought from before. I have a deal done with one guy, but the other is humming and hawing, and unless I can get both (they are just 30 miles apart of each other) I'm not doing the long drive that it is just for one machine. IF I get them, I will post my find here. Although I can't pick up anything until my large screw comes out of my ankle from my broken leg, which comes out this week FINALLY! The pins and plate along the side stay forever :glare: Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: Jim on April 07, 2013, 07:03:44 pm Off Topic...
OUCH ! ! ! Congrats on a good recovery! Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: Creighton on April 07, 2013, 07:07:54 pm Thanks for the clarity. We have not bump shops in the Pacific NW.
Dent repair, "restorers" etc.. more than you can shake a stick at :-) Creighton Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: Creighton on April 07, 2013, 07:10:12 pm Yikes!! Hope you mend soon!!
Creighton Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: BONOVOX on April 07, 2013, 07:34:52 pm Sorry, it was a bit off topic.
Never heard of bump shop before... we call auto body shops here scamm..... I mean "Body Shop" :happydrinkers: Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: SIGNGUY on April 10, 2013, 11:54:52 am Great Score Tim...
I am one of the other Members who has one too.. and it was funny i had a long conversation with a guy at the chicago show who restored stoners ,he even makes the reverse screen printed glass, and he was doubting the existance of them.. I told him i have one and konw of a few others... I may have him make up the glass I need for mine as it's two peices ... so if you ever need a set for the stoner jr with gum wheel.. let me know maybe we can get a package rate? Nice pickup! Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: Slider-Bob on April 10, 2013, 12:08:41 pm Ed...You keep buying all those machines in Michigan, and the Michigan Mafia will make sure your other ankle looks like your broken one!

Are you talking about Tony in Ohio ? Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: Jim on April 10, 2013, 08:49:37 pm Great Score Tim... I asked Tony if he was ever going to reproduce the glass in the other original colors I have seen instead of just the red/black version... At the time, he said no since it is too expensive to have other colors made...I am one of the other Members who has one too.. and it was funny i had a long conversation with a guy at the chicago show who restored stoners ,he even makes the reverse screen printed glass, and he was doubting the existance of them.. I told him i have one and konw of a few others... I may have him make up the glass I need for mine as it's two peices ... so if you ever need a set for the stoner jr with gum wheel.. let me know maybe we can get a package rate? Nice pickup! I'm in the process of getting several versions done on printed vinyl and layered between two 1/8 pieces. I'm working on the old 6select Univendor glass from the late 30's/early 40's which is very art-deco. This was before they merged with Stoner... As far as the Junior/120w/ gum wheel, this is model I would like to own some day as well ! ! ! Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: SIGNGUY on April 11, 2013, 09:50:30 am Signguy Yeah Pretty sure that was him.. Are you talking about Tony in Ohio ? Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: Ltransam on April 11, 2013, 11:41:36 am Yea , He's a Good Guy .But He Could Not Reproduce my stoner pastries Machine Glass do to the Condition .Its Been 2 years trying And Curtis is really busy he said he's got a Nice One that Could Be copied. But I had Bugging Him since it's been a long time We Spoke at the Fall show last year .But I don't think he's slowed down yet to Follow up on it So I spoke To Jim because He also is picking Up a 5 pull Pastries Like Mine . And I'll most likely send it to him .Jim Dose Most Of his own and offered his assistance . The glass is the Only Thing I want Before I start the Rebuild   Title: Re: Long week but a good score Post by: mznb1u on April 11, 2013, 08:24:40 pm I'm in the process of getting several versions done on printed vinyl and layered between two 1/8 pieces.
