Title: Rewiring agitator/water circulator??? - Westinghouse Standard
Post by: matthayman on February 12, 2013, 05:46:27 pm
Just picked up a Westinghouse Standard with a Vendo 159 Spin Top.  Looking to rewire the agitator, the original wiring has disintegrated.  How do I crack this thing open?  Pull off what looks like the press fit cap from the top or separate the rotating lower potion from the mounting flange section? The motor works and runs great so don't want to screw it up of damage the bearings.

Under the pressed cap there should be the oil wick, top shaft nut and upper Bering. I have never took one apart past that point but I would start by removing the top shaft nut to separate the unit. I believe Fun-tronics sells them if wish to replace the motor.

So remove the top cap?   Any special tools or tricks to take it off and ensure it doesn't get damaged?

I used a putty knife on the lip and gently tap it with a hammer around the edges working the cap off being careful not to ding it up. I am sure there are better tools to use but that's all I had handy at the time.

I've used a flat screw driver and a hammer to tap around the edge to pop it off.

So I have it almost completely apart (see pics).  Now How do I remove the motor electromagnets from the upper section to get to the wire connections?

Also, How do I remove the shaft from the lower casting?

Looking to powder coat the castings and machine the shaft to receive a 5/16" bore impeller that I bought.

the hub that the stator coils (electromagnets as you called them) are pressed onto the center hub/bearing then the edged was "peened" (rolled over) to hold them in place. ( it's kinda permanent) you could grind it around the circumference but then you'll have to epoxy it back in place.

Cool pictures, never seen inside of the agitator. Keep us posted on your progress.

Update: This effort ended with a disaster during the stator removal.  We machined the peened over lip down to the stator core.  At that point the machinist at my work handed it to our maintenance person to utilize a proper puller to remove the coil.  Unfortunately when no one was there he first tried to utilize a pair of channel locks, clamping on the stator surface itself.  Needless to say he destroyed the stator in the process.

That leads me to orderings new one.  I see the units Soda Jerks has to offer and would prefer replacing with a closed steel unit bearing style motor as opposed to what appears to be open plastic housing units. Please correct me if I am wrong here.

Does anyone know how I can order this unit and what the price might be?

I have an agitator motor that works. I cut the wrotten wires off and there is still enough left to connect to new wires. let me know if you are interested. just bought a WE-6 for parts.
