The seller using the term "holy grail of soda machines" leads me to believe this one will not go cheap

If it's "The Holy Grail" do we need to bring him a shrubbery?

I think a 56 has to be up there, close to the top. In my humble opinion in the top five..

Sellers name is Jim.  He called me back and we talked for a while. Nice older guy...knows what he has.

He has 2 of them (Bookends as he calls them). One is a 1952, the other a 1953.  They are slightly different according to Jim.

He wants 3k for each of them.  I said they go for around 2k in the condition they are in.

He said then he'll wait and drag them to Chicago in Nov and get 3k.

After all, they are the Holy Grail.

The holy grail, huh... Well, we all have a idea of what that might be but my Royal crown VMC 81 sold for $9500. To me, that IS the holy grail of soda machines.

I would agree on the RC 81. Light Up Pepsi will always be a single vend machine.

How about a Vendo 83 with a Selectavend conversion - in vintage condition.  This looks more like a bookend.

What... is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?   :tounge:

Did you tell him, "Oh, but you can't expect to wield supreme executive soda machine power just because some watery tart threw a Jacobs Pepsi 56 at you."

I am a big Python fan and could quote this movie for hours!  After all, there are some who call me... Tim. 8)

Greetings Tim the Enchanter  --  Believe it or not, and I know this thread has completely digressed, but someone actually took the time to determine answer the question.  Apparently 10 to 11 meters per second.

Should we ask the seller 5 questions *three questions* Three questions about the machine?

Title: Final (for now) on the Jacobs 56 Light Up for sale
Post by: BeaYoung on October 20, 2012, 10:44:25 am
We ended up meeting the gentleman selling the Jacobs 56 and working out a fair trade involving a Vendo 81. He is a very nice guy and has an amazing collection of vintage items. The 56 spent the night in the Jeep because we got home late, but we are anxious to get it unloaded today and check it out at home. It's a sweet machine!

Here ya' go! As soon as we figure out how to un-jam the top latch on the coin door, I'll post some pics of that too. At the moment turning the key opened the bottom latch but the top one is stuck in the locked position. If anyone has any experience with that, please advise. My feeble attempts with a coat hanger to grab the upper arm and pull down have not been successful. I don't want to get too ambitious with it and bend the coin door. Any help from this group is always appreciated. Thanks!

I saw the pictures of the one Rod did and it is amazing! I hope this one looks that nice one day soon!

Hopefully someone else has encountered this lock problem and will have some suggestions... Even though it's a new lock, I am tempted to drill the lock out so I have a little workng room to get to that upper arm. I am not sure there are many other options.

Finally got the coin door open tonight. My SawzAll did wonders! LOL! Just kidding of course.

There are times when having smaller "girl" hands is useful! I was able to slide my hand behind the coin door and loosen the rod connected to the key Assembly. It was thankfully only hand tightened. The seller had a similar problem with his other J machine and was able to get it open using a similar method. I already don't appreciate the two latch system. Seems silly to be to secure the coin door with two latches when you can take a hex wrench and open the whole main door. Funny!

I added some photos of the coin mech and inside the Pepsi emblem.

We'd really love to see it lit up but that is another thread.

The coin mech looks huge to me compared to some of the other Vendo machines and sliders we have. Did someone different manufacture the coin mechs for Jacobs? It's a monster!

Be aware that the lightup signs original lamps are wired in series/120Volts so they will appear quite dim in daylight, I modified Pat Pixleys Pepsi Jacobs restoration with a diode so the lamps could be run in a standard parallel circuit without over heating the back paint of the sign ( as evident here in the picture)   DON'T go over a 7 watt bulb.

Thanks for those tips! I will leave the re-wiring to the restoration experts. We'll probably just plunk a couple of bulbs in to see that they don't work~
