Title: Grant's Milk .... Thermometer
Post by: davethebirdman on August 16, 2012, 02:39:22 am
Morning gentlemen

I have acquired a Grant's Milk rounded Thermometer. picked it up for $1 plus a small amount of postage.

Its currently in pretty poor shape.

I always imagined these things to be the size of a PAM Type clock and of similar construction. This one however is much smaller
and the metal frame that surrounds the glass seems to be all in one piece. I'd like to take it to bits if possible to clean and try and get it working

Has anyone had any luck with doing such a task without first breaking the bevelled glass??

All help much appreciated..

Dave

I think a single screw holds the band together, which holds the glass and thermometer face.
Not much to them Dave.
Never had much luck adjusting if the temp is not accurate though.
Is Grant's a European diary company? Never heard of them...

Tom

thank you for the sensible answer. I can rely on you not to rise to the occasion.

The band that goes around this looks to be all one piece. No screw holes. Guess it would have been a throw away piece if the glass smashed etc. Good bit of decoration I suppose. If I can find some space.

I tihnk that it once travelled across the water. We never had anything like this. Can't get much of a hit on google either.

You don't have a lot of money into it.....you may as well try and fix it.

Maybe you could select a location to cut, tape the glass and then use a hack saw blade to break the front of the band and then the rear?   Fix the band later.

I the band  has no sea  then it was pressed on, and with extreme patience, you should be able to "pop" it off, Ir . Or as  Glen mentioned, cut the band, and repair or replace when you are done.

If this is made like a true Pam thermometer there is no way to take them apart.  I collect thermometers and have about 45 of them.  Most of the round Coke thermometers have the band around them with two screws.  They are easy to work on.  The Pam thermometer not so much.  They were made all in one piece.  I have a Dr. Pepper Pam thermometer that I would love to take the lens off of to clean the inside but there is no way to do it.  You would have to bend the frame all the way around to remove the glass and then bend it all back.

That was my next thought. Prying the band back to take off the glass.

Problem is the metal is thicker than on the removable band thermometers.  You would have to make so many small bends in the metal it would look like crap when you get through.  If you go on ebay and type Pam thermometer you can click on any of them that picture the front and back and will see how they are made. I found this post interesting because I just bought a nice one in an auction but didn't realize it had some trash on the back side of the glass.  I guess all of these things were made to use and then throw away.
