Title: CFLs
Post by: pinballdude on August 12, 2012, 04:33:53 pm
Anybody ever try a CFL in a vintage clock or light up sign that normally takes
incandescent bulbs? They don't give of heat, right?, so they wont warp or burn
clock faces. Any pros or cons? I'm sure the "look" would be different.

I haven't tried  a CFL yet, but I'd agree with you on all your thoughts, including a difference in the light produced. Not sure if it will look better, worse or the same.

I've had a couple in my DP bottle cap clock for a couple of years now. I can go with a higher wattage too.

If you shop around, you can find CFL's that give off a more "yellow" light similar to incandescent bulbs.  I use them in our table lamps in the family room.  Much nicer than the harsh white light of the average CFLs.

Only thing I would worry about is that they might discolor things since I noticed at work when ever I change out a burned out CFL the white plastic base is allways yellow where the glass connects to the base.
