Title: The Derecho...
Post by: tkaz on July 04, 2012, 12:07:52 am
A new word that I don't want to hear again...rough times in DC the last few days, a 'derecho' or land hurricane, blew through Friday evening and absolutely hammered the area.  A large branch pulled down my power and phone lines, but I was luckier than some of the neighbors who had 100-year-old oak trees laying on top of their house.  No power or AC was rough for the weekend with 100+ degree temps, I got power back Sunday night but as of tonight over half of the town is still out.

How'd everyone else fare?  It was a pretty wide storm path, from Illinois to Maryland, hope there wasn't any bad damage to anyone.

Glad to hear you came through without too much trouble!
It's tough living in 100 degree weather without electricity!
Fortunately, here in S. Fla, we haven't had any hurricanes visit in recent years...

We went about 36 hours without power. A neighbor had a large tree come down through their son's bedroom.

Glad to hear you are OK, all things considered.

We only got the fringes of it here in Southern PA, but I work in Baltimore so I've been hearing a lot about it.   Fortunately (I'm in IT) our datacenter power and connectivity was not interrupted and our offices in Baltimore did not lose power.

I took a few days off around the holiday and my staff has a running joke that whenever I take time off we get strange events.  This will add to the lore.  Last year when I took a vacation the area was hit with an earthquake.

A tree fell through my neighbor's house. The little boy was sleeping when it fell and they couldn't get to him right away as the tree had jammed the door. A 90 year old lady in the same zip code as me died when a tree fell into her house and another man died when a tree fell on his car (not the one pictured above, but similar). The wind sheered the trees and telephone poles in half.

I was Lucky this Time I was only off the grid for 3 days  .And of course We had the 100 + Temperatures  It sucked Trying to Sleep in Sweat at night when your house is 89 degrees inside at midnight , :censored:. But I did Manage to keep my 2 Freezers & Frig Cold with my Generator .I learned the Last Storm in 2008 that had us witrh out power for 7 days ,

We are thinking of getting a generator to have on hand. Since we moved here in the spring of '09, we've had at least three storms I can think of (snow/thunder) that have resulted in power being out at least two days, with the longest being about 5.

I was lucky to pick up a small generator three weeks ago that needed a new gas line...that $20 saved all the food in my fridge and freezer...and kept my beers cold to keep me sane all weekend!
