Title: Powder coating 81d parts
Post by: Swachtelncc on February 15, 2012, 07:36:19 pm
I was going take my shelves and condesor pan to get powder coated this weekend. Was wondering if you guys thought powder coating the liner would be a good idea.

I had mine powdercoated and I'm happy with it...the shelves also...I would re-zinc the shelves If I had a chance to do it again.

That wheel on the 81 shelves does not do too well in the oven. There was a detailed discussion here a few years back on this subject.

There has been a lot of discussion regarding off gassing and its impact on powdercoating.  I powdercoated my shelves and the liner tub.  Extremely happy with the results and would do it again but they originally had to be done a second time due to the offgassing.  Before redoing the shelves I let them soak in a a large plastic tub with some muratic acid to eat off all the galvanizing.  Its a kind of nasty stuff but it helps insure a really nice finish.  The tubs are hard to put in an acid bath due to their size, so make sure you sandblast it or treat it with something before getting it coated.  I have read that the powdercoating holds up better than the zinc, but I will defer to those here with more personal experience using both options.  Here is a pic of the inside of my 56, everything you see is powdercoated in a light silver.

I powder coat the tank shelves and the face to the bottle rack and the compressor plate.

I was thinking silver for the tub, shelves and other small parts  . And White for the front of the bottle rack. Just might need a little help disassemble the rack assembly.
