Title: Hot compressor
Post by: on June 25, 2004, 12:21:01 pm
I have a Cavalier Model USS 12-96.  I plugged it for the first time and it immediately started cooling, however the compressor and condensor seem to be hotter than they should.  Also, the fan doesn't come on.  My questions are:  Should it run hot and is the fan thermostatically controlled, should it run all the time or is it clutched.  Thanks in advance for any help.

Fan not running Is a bad thing Compressor Hot Is preaty much the normal when you First cool down as its major work to do so after the Initial coolo down it will run cooler, My breakmate machines do the same I touched the compressor during the initial cooldown and It was HOT too hot to touch but after that its just kinda warm But GET THE FAN FIXED :)

the condensor fan should run at the same time as the compressor, so I agree, replace it!

Try spinning the fan blade. If it is hard to turn you may get lucky and save the motor. Take it out, lay it flat and lubricate the shaft. Also make sure it's not a bad wire  or connection.
Even if you get it working again, (if it's the original motor),the bearing becomes worn and it runs loud.
$25.00 for a new fan motor is a good idea for any machine that is going to be put inside the house.

how hot is too hot? I have A 96 as well and I think the compressor is on its way out. Draws 6 amps (suppose to be a 1/4 hp unit!) anf my IR gun had the thing at 200 degrees (felt like it too, ouch!). The 3-in-1 keeps tripping out.

Any comments?

I'm not sure how to hot is.  I've unplugged it til I get the fan motor replaced.  I just got the motor today.  Grainger Industrial supply had one, part number 4M502.  It's about 18 dollars.  I should have it up and running today.  I'll check it all out and see how hot it gets.  Thanks for the input.

I just went to my warehouse to check on the machine.  It's purring like a kiiten and staying very cold.  I'll check it again on Monday and see how it did.  I was goig to check the temp, but the battery in my IR thermometer is dead.  I guess it will have to wait.
