Title: Does this look like galvanized metal? Post by: on June 14, 2004, 09:48:14 pm Hi folks,
I bought a Cavalier 96, oh, NINE YEARS AGO, and I'm finally getting back to work on it. I have stripped it down (see pix, I hope). The metal looks galvanized to me; what do you think? Thanks, Jeff Title: Does this look like galvanized metal? Post by: vendobaldtops on June 15, 2004, 12:03:27 am That cav.96 actually looks like it could have cleaned up pretty easily....
Title: Does this look like galvanized metal? Post by: MoonDawg on June 15, 2004, 09:08:21 am No galvanizing, just looks that way after sandblasting. That is plain old cold rolled steel and in my part of the country, a bare cabinet like yours will start rusting within days, if left outside.
You may want to primer it asap, while you're still motivated Glen Title: Does this look like galvanized metal? Post by: on June 15, 2004, 11:09:35 am
It looks better in the pictures than it did in person. It had several different coats of red paint and the last one looked like they put it on with a brush; very rough and peeling in places. Title: Does this look like galvanized metal? Post by: on June 15, 2004, 12:02:34 pm
It did sit out and did not rust. That's why I was suspecting galvanized. I want to prime next, but the stuff I'm looking at has a different primer if it's galvanized. Any way to tell for sure? Title: Does this look like galvanized metal? Post by: Jim on June 15, 2004, 05:37:30 pm I haven't seen an upright machine made from galvinized metal. If you look closely at a galvinized product, it has a different look than the all gray metal look you have after blasting...
As far as not rusting, I wouldn't see how long it takes before surface rust begins! Then you'll be right back where you started... I would recommend using a decent/quality primer and this can depend on which method you plan for the body work. Some utilize body fillers prior to priming while others will utilize primers that can have body fillers applied on top of the primer. And then you get into high build primers for assisting the body work process... But this is another topic in itself! Title: Does this look like galvanized metal? Thanks Jim. You guys are great. I've got some more questions that I'll put in another thread. Title: Does this look like galvanized metal? Post by: on July 15, 2004, 12:01:08 pm My cav 96 was definitely galvanized under it's original paint. I sanded through it here and there and it was pretty obvious.
