Title: Two new toys for me!!
Post by: johnnyselman on September 29, 2011, 09:04:36 pm
I picked these up a few weeks ago. I'm a sucker for all things coin operated. The first is a 1956 Chicago Coin "Steam Shovel". Fill the hoper to try to get as many tons of gravel(actualy beans) as you can!  Next is 1960 Midway "Shooting Gallery". Actual shoots 11/16 plastic balls! vacumm/air powered. 4 owls that drop when hit, 6 ducks going around on a chain that also drops and a bear that pops up and moves side to side very erraticly.

Very cool.

THere used to be a similar steam shovel game in the Fun Barn arcade in Dennisport MA up to a few years ago.  I believe they used to have the shooting game too, or something real close to it.

What a great place that was, there were a ton of old arcade games & pinballs and a few video games.  Mini golf and pitch & putt outside.  I loved that place as a kid.

Where did you find them?

Thats pretty awesome! I remember a game that they used to have at chucke cheese when I was younger that was very similar to that steam shovel game. I think for that one you had to scoop up these plastic balls and dump them on a conveyor and they would fill up this area and if it got above a certain line then you got some tickets or something like that.

Johnny,

Can you share how much the steam shovel game was?  I met a couple guys two years ago that travel around the midwest as a team looking for old pinballs to restore. Part time pickers looking for coinop arcade stuff.  They have two of those in their own personal arcade, one for each of them, and they are way cool.  I have been looking for one ever since.  They had dried corn in theirs because it was cheaper to fill up the bottom with , but I believe they said it was actually supposed to have lentil beans because the lentils look more like gravel.  Congrats on the find - it looks like it is in great shape.  How did you find it?

Johnny,
The gun game is just begging for attention way over there separated from the rest of the games. I have the perfect spot for it where it will be loved!
Great game - I remember it as a kid! They both are great finds....Congrats and do tell!

Love the crane game. I bought a crane game a few weeks back and my daughter loves it.

The Midway shooting galleries are awesome.  The best gun games out there.  Dale styles are good, but being able to shoot actual balls at a moving target is priceless.

The crane looks cool too, but although the crane is probably valued more than the gun game, I would take the gun game over the crane, anyday.  Thay are just that cool. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

I got them from a small town  of  Collinwood TN about an hour from me. There was an ad on CL for a yard sale. The ad stated that they had some arcade games. So I went to check it out and came home with them.
I didn't know how desirable they were until the next day when I researched them. Especially the Steam Shovel.

Thanks for the kind words guys! I would also love to see what you have in your rooms. Maybe someone can start a new post for you guys to show yours.
As far as open spaces I have had so many things go thru my game room people think I'm a dealer, which I am not!!! Usually I fill up the room until it just cant hold any more. Then I'll sell some to make room/cash for something new. I may be a little different (or not) than some of you guys. I get more enjoyment in finding ("The hunt" )then bringing it back to life than I do actualy owning it. Rarely do I buy anything that works and is ready to display.
Here a link to a photo album that kind shows how the room has evolved.

I like the pitch and bat machine. It is in the corner of the room and I think it is the one that gives out cards?

Yes a Williams "Slugfest" .Very fun game from 1991. It does give out baseball cards. It resides at a friend house now.

Nice gameroom....Love the MB(Monster Bash) pinball, great game. I sold my MB and AFM to buy my wife her engagement ring in 2003. They are probably worth nearly double now. I should have sold my Harley instead, would have been a better choice.

Dave,

I like your collection.  Are you confined to one room?  My wife wont allow anything on our main floor.  My stuff always ends up in the basement.  My basement is getting full too.  I think it's time for the wife to move her washer and dryer upstairs.

At least you guys have basements!!  Basements in Texas are almost as rare as dinosaurs in New York City!!!  I only wish I had the extra space, haha.

Dave thats alot of great stuff! I wish I had more room for signs and hangable stuff but being in the basement I only have 6'11" ceilling. But the great thing is, its a walk out basement that opens up into my driveway.
What  are the vendors above the Wurlitzer? I see a coin slot but do they have a handle or lever to vend??

The machines above the Juke are four British wall vendors from the 50's. Handle on the side. Polo Mint, Cadbury Dairy Milk, Rowntrees Fruit Pastilles and Milky Way.
I have about 40 vending machines on display. Can't get fried with an old wall vendor... No electricity.

Where do you guys find this stuff??  What do you search for as far as "key words" on an internet search to see any ads?  Makes me wonder what I'm missing in my area.

Dave, you really do have a lot of great items, coin-op, vending, signs, etc.  Great collection!!!

My search has been a labour of love. Every American Machine I have I've had to wait for.
Can't do a search here on cragislist and find a Stoner or a Vendo 39.

I've also bought bits back from holidays.
