Title: Popcorn anyone??? Finding stuff left and right
Post by: bcharlton on September 28, 2011, 05:17:57 pm
Just picked it up.  It is a Popcorn Sez machine.  Got it to work on a dime after I brought it home.  Can anyone  help with this?  I have a few questions regarding the warming mechanism

Looks like a nice original, I'm assuming the warmers are either Light bulbs or some sort of element?
I mainly do the old poppers so not too familiar with the warmers?
I have this on and never seen another like it?

I was told a good working original  go for over $1000  I traded a couple of old AMI jukeboxes for it.  I will restore it.  It does not look  as hard as a Stoner Candy machien to restore.

question, you guys who have the warmers... do you just fill it up for like parties and such , or do you constantly keep popcorn in it , so you have it available when you want? and how fresh does it stay?, would assume it would go stale, as I'm sure the compartment is not air tight?
Just curiuos?

From what I 've seen on a few it's a ceramic/asbestos heating element, they are usually wrapped in a fiberglass , type of fabric material.. and usually pretty shot over the years... not sure what they could be replaced with.

others I've seen use ,plain old light bulbs..

I know that a little bit of popcorn can stay pretty good for over 12 hours in a popcorn medium sized popcorn popper (not one of the vending machines but a regular one) but it usually gets dumped out at the end of the night so I don't know how many days it would last.

Instant of a light bulb they sell at pets store (kids had a ball python) a ceramic heater that fits in a light socket. They also sale heating pads the might work as well.

I was just curious what the original looked like. Pretty sure it uses resistance wire. It's always nice to be able to find a modern-day, inexpensive alternative when it comes to critical parts like that. The IR bulbs and cermaic heater bulbs are nice especially if you concern is just to heat, not to cook. A huge difference in temp!

Brian,

I think these are just popcorn dispensers with warmers not popcorn poppers.

Ray,

Absolutely. These are just warmers, not poppers. I've always kind of like the looks of the Popcorn Sez model but just can't bring myself to drop cash on them when I know there is a perfectly good Popperette, U-Pop-It or Minit-Pop out there that needs to be saved from the scrap heap!

I was just wondering about what exactly these dispensers use as a heat source. I reproduced the heating element for the Popperette a few years ago and just thought that I might be able to help a bit with understanding this one.

Here is a picture of the warmer/heating element in the Popcorn Sez.  Any ideas would be helpful.  I too was looking to restore a Minute Pop because of the actual popping of the popcorn looks very appealing.  I have heard however, that clean up can make those units a little frustrating.

I would not turn one down however.

Brian,

Thanks for the info!  I looked up both U-Pop-It  and the  Minit-Pop because they were new to me and found a decedent website on them.  I think I like the Minit-Pop best.
