Title: Pimped out cooling system on ebay
Post by: loman4ec on March 22, 2011, 10:11:50 pm
This guy has been posting on ebay for a long time but this one is the best so far. Talk about over-restored. What do you guys think of this? I just wonder if he ever sells them? I couldn't imagine putting this in a restored machine. I can't believe he uses polished diamond plate for the bottom     I am surprised he didn't chrome plate the compressor

Nice... :Oo: that'll look OEM in a restored Cavalier96   maybe some pin-stripes & side flames???

hope that's not a liquid/high side filter-dryer installed on the evaporators' suction line looks like he chopped of 1/3 of it & braze it onto the line...yikes!

I can't see how this configuration would even work in a V81? or similiar? lots of tubing would have to be bent and moved around? and from the looks of it the compressor and condensor are switche around and backwards... hmmm

Since he makes them I think he would have one for the 81 specifically.

I can't believe it has 7 bids. I guess its only $150. For that price you cant even get the compressor. You could use the original deck plate get get rid of the polished diamond plate one.

Upon closer inspection...yes, that is a drier...being used for an accumulator.
Also, it appears, that the same coil is being used, for the evaporator and condenser.
Now, I'm no expert... :glare:  but, since the coils are only 2 row and extreamly small in size,
what would happen if you installed a true 1/4hp compressor in say, a coil system
sized for, oh...1/5 or 1/6hp?  "snicker"...lol

I'm just say'n... :tounge:

Yeah, I noticed the condenser's coil is a "tad" undersized, & I don't even see a liquid line filter/dryer anywhere on the condensing unit...and I'm not too sure about that meat-ball shaped import compressor either...low torque/ no start-capacitor.. once it does start go into heat-soak mode & over pressure the system, it will stall & trip out on the restart...

Funny, I just ran into a commercial freezer that had been "serviced" by having it's original 1/3HP R-502 compressor ( which was bad) replaced with a good used 1/2Hp low-temp unit ( which you'd think would be fine...BUT>>>) the undersized condenser coils were hot enough to fry an egg on & when the heat-soaked R-4040A reached the evap valve, it basically flashed straight to hot vapor & wouldn't cool the "freezer" down past +45-degrees/F  High side pressure was WAY up @ >300PSI...there she blows!    he paid $800 for this "rebuilt" 2dr freezer & now has to put another $500 into a whole replacement compressor/condensing unit..not a happy puppy.  :wow:

502/404 and 134a....not the same thing....

John, you should see the stuff I get in sometimes,
by "professional" techs...make your socks curl.

Now check out what he is selling. I think this is just wrong. I know at one point I would have bought this thinking I could figure it out and then finally figure out that the reason it is so expensive to have a cooling unit fixed is because its really complicated and takes a specialist. I don't know about everyone else but I think this is VERY misleading.

i saw these and was considering them, aint a bad price, glad to hear your guys's opinions on them. buying a $700 cooling unit for every machine missing one really shrinks the profit margin, but then again never have had a problem with a $700 unit either

Just my .02. I bought 2 compressors from this guy several years ago and they ran fantastic. Also, I didn't know exactly how it needed to be wired when I installed it but after a couple of phone calls to him, everything worked out great. Really nice guy and had no problems with my 2 units. Good luck!

I have talked to him before and he is friendly. I just think the systems are funny looking with the shiny diamond plate bottom but I asked and regular bottoms are available. I would be worried about the smaller sized coils. You would think the lack of a row of coils on the evaporator would make the cooling not as good and take a lot longer to cool down.
