Title: Vmc 81 7up door on ebay ends today
Post by: Bireleys1 on March 20, 2011, 12:57:08 pm
It looks to be a little rough but it does appear to be embossed and it comes with the coin door.

The rear door 7up outline, although real faint, looks crooked and offline. Could it be a generic? Hard to tell.

If it was generic it wouldn't have anything on the back of the door. Its an embossed door. even though it needs work its a heck of a good deal.

the picture of reverse side of the door shows it to be truly embossed, the trapezoid shaped teal color outline around the 7up logo is correct too. should be an interesting auction to watch... :oh:

the reason the rear view of the 7up logo looks uneven is because your eye is drawn to the gusset & the round corner of the door, if you look at the lower edge, you'll see that it's  quite parallel to the coindoor's stamping line...

Why would someone want just the door? To make a 7up out of a generic? If I were to shell out big bucks for an RC81 or 7up81, I would want to know that most of the machine was original and that there are photos documenting the original machine and the entire restoration along with the original ID tag.

It went from $100 to over $430 in the ten minutes I was watching... I'm guessing it goes for over $800. That's crazy $$$.  Any opinions on what a generic VMC 81 door is worth?

Title: Re: Vmc 81 7up door on ebay ends today

The door makes the machine, a generic bodied chassis with an embossed door will sell way over any other machine, the door came off of a genuine 7up machine at some point, & it would be no different than replacing a damaged fender on a collectible auto. & if they can locate a correct ID/Serial number plate, they're in business...besides even as a "fantasy"  machine, it would still be way cool!

Maybe the seller has the rest of this machine in a pile somewhere.

FYI...this is NOT a generic door it IS an embossed 7up...that's why the big bucks...  if it turned out that it wasn't  embossed, the winner would have every right to cancel his/her bids regardless...

Unless I misunderstood your question, I figure a generic door would go for around $200 tops in this condition, depends on how bad someone wants to complete their machine I guess... :upside:

when you say generic 81 door are you referring to the 7up on ebay now?

Title: Re: Vmc 81 7up door on ebay ends today
Post by: Cokemachinesandmore on March 20, 2011, 02:38:00 pm
Johnie G is correct that is not a generic door, that is an original vmc 7 up door.  a restored 7up 81 is worth over 5k

Title: Re: Vmc 81 7up door on ebay ends today
Post by: scoccermom on March 20, 2011, 02:40:34 pm
Interesting...are the parts on these machines worth more than the whole? An original 7up81, in rough condition, is maybe worth $3,000? Interesting what the door ends up going for.

Title: Re: Vmc 81 7up door on ebay ends today
Post by: Cokemachinesandmore on March 20, 2011, 02:42:12 pm
not sure what it will finish at, but it will be over 600 for sure

Title: Re: Vmc 81 7up door on ebay ends today

Also it has a correct VMC coin bezel on it. They can be really hard to find and I have seen a lot of VMC's lately that have had Vendo coin bezels on them. The coin door and bezel alone is worth $350 or more. I have sold bottle doors from $50 to $125 so we are already at over $400 without the embossed 7up door. It's going to go high I bet.

I popped a 1-click bid & it's over $480 at this point... :tounge:

I'm just curious as to how many where watching this till someone mentioned it on this site... I've been watching it since it was posted a week ago.. thinking just maybe ,just maybe it would go unoticed... not so with ebay...

Diego, your comment about a restored 7up is valued over 5k.. did you mean unrestored? I'd think the restored 7ups if done right are worth more than 5k?  maybe a typo?

will be fun to watch.. I'm guessing it'll go over 800

Title: Re: Vmc 81 7up door on ebay ends today

Oh you are so correct!, there are lurkers that watch this site for hot leads to be sure, so be careful what you post if you are a bidder & you're trying to get it on the cheap ( or at least affordable)

$500 20 minutes left

I've seen it on ebay since it was listed also. Thought it might have been a generic. Looks like the same two bidders are driving it up. At $610 now.

It's fun to watch.. now that I'm out at 500... every time I refresh it goes up a few bucks....

Title: Re: Vmc 81 7up door on ebay ends today
Post by: johnieG on March 20, 2011, 02:51:32 pm
Plus even you don't have a machine, you can sit on it for a year & double your money

( Caution this comment is a deliberate attempt to get lurkers to drive the bidding higher & higher)  :wow:

my max bid was for $500 also...fun fun fun

It still sounds like crazy $$$....didn't signguy pick up an entire machine for 3k a few months ago? Also, I only asked about a generic VMC door because I finally found one and wanted to know if I was overpaying for it...I wasn't suggesting the one on ebay was generic.

Mr. Coates' machine is way over priced. That's why it's not selling.

Title: Re: Vmc 81 7up door on ebay ends today
Post by: collecture on March 20, 2011, 03:08:31 pm
Vendo 80 = $500-$800
Mech = $300
Stack & Shelves / Brackets = $500
Plus 7UP door = $800

Coke 81D =$1500
7UP door = $800

Either way you get an embossed 7UP81 for about 2/3 the going rate. Good deal!

I am at work got a phone call, i was at 703.00  would have gone 900.  it would have still been a great price. The door makes the machine not the cabinet.

I would have done the same thing - put in the $40 asking bid just to prevent the seller from changing the wording in the title and then been there to snipe in the end. He could've attracted a lot more interest with a few more search words in the title. I believe the seller really did not know what he had.

I was in contact with the seller when it was first listed.. he did not know what he had, just and old pop machine door he told me ..
I of course at that asked if he'd sell it outright.. no go.

oh well. .someone still got a decent deal ... I had a couple of clients wanting a 7up , and they may have bid.. we'll see.

You'll most likely be able to find out who won it if you check the auction page in about a month.
Look at the seller's feedback and the buyer's user name will be visible if feedback was given by either party.

Sounds like the going rate for a rough, all original, is $3,000. Sooner or later as these things rise in price, someone is going to make a fake 7up door. That's why I would want to start out with an all original machine with the tag.

Title: Re: Vmc 81 7up door on ebay ends today
Post by: johnieG on March 20, 2011, 05:42:43 pm
Yep, the lack of Original machines can drive unscrupulous people to do fake machines...remember the RC Cola "made-in-China" "patch panels"  that converted quite a few generic 81's into some bogus machines, that all they do is dilute the value of the originals, just like all of those "fantasy" VMC 44's floating around out there that were billed as "rare machines"...

Educating ourselves to our hobby is a good thing in discussions like these here at SMC.

I was watching it too. Did not place a bid though. Thought it would go for around $400, it went for me!!! I had a really nice 7up 81 that I bought for 5k 4-5 years ago and sold it about 2 years ago for $6500. Boy do I miss it! They are nice! In fact the one I had is picture on our site's homepage. Jim put it up there. They are rare! Hope someone on here got the door!

Sadly, the tag can be reproduced, and the dies to stamp the serial number, etc are available for $20.  Knowledge is the key

My thoughts exactly.  It would be good to educate yourself on the originals and know what to look for if something turns up.

There's no feedback left from the sale yet. i would imagine not for a few weeks if the item has to be shipped via carrier.
And we're assuming the seller will leave feedback

you do have visibility on the winning bidder tho....

as the seller has already left feedback for them

just check "feedback left for others" drop down box

it shows winning bidder as      vintagevendos166w

I would like to see it after it's all nice and restored, I'm sure if he puts it on a machine he's make a nice profit.
