Title: E Reader advice. (Sorry for the non soda related topic)
Post by: loman4ec on March 15, 2011, 09:00:11 pm
Anyone have any suggestions on e-readers? I am buying one for Heather (my wife) for her birthday. She is a real bookworm and I think she will love it. I can't afford an Ipad but I was looking into the Nook or the Kindle. Anyone have any feedback whether it be good or bad? I have looked high and low and have not been able to find the answer to one question. In WIFI can you surf the web and check email on the Nook and Kindle or are they books only? I know they cannot do advanced computing but if they can go onto yahoo or google and read email or read the news or search for directions or ebay and so on it would be great! thanks in advance!

I'd say Kindle.. Nook I think is linked to Barnes and Noble and is the only place you can get books.. kindle is open format I believe.
My wife was going to buy one until she figured the library is still FREE!!  until then.. no kindle.

I asked the same of the group here a while back...here is the thread...

I like the Kindle and am hooked on the free word games - Every Word & Shuffled Row.
You can download PDF files from your computer to it too, but they are not formatted for it and kind of a hassle to read.
I understand that you can download the Library E-Books to it thru your computer, but I haven't figured that out yet.
No web surfing. Easy to read in bright light with no glare, but not backlit for reading in the dark which is the only drawback (to me).

It depends on what you want to use it for, the Kindle for books wins hands down ,  but for someone like myself I get allot of reference and tech books in PDF format and the kindle and allot of the EReaders don't handle PDF in their native format.  Most EReaders convert them to html and any pictures or graphics show up as tiny icons that wouldn't open. So what I been looking at is an Android tablet or an IPAD. The Androids tablets  I’ve been looking at are the  Archos 70 (7" screen)  &   Archos 101 (10" screen) . Both for under $300,  they are a cheaper alternative  to the IPAD  . These tablets are Google answer to the IPAD, you can read books using Kindle and PDF programs , surf the web, down apps  etc.  They also have the Archos 7 “7” screen ,a slower version  of the 70 for just $99 at tiger direct .  The   IPAD ‘1’ 16GB Wi-Fi at $399, while supply last right now is also tempting buy.

Josh I have a Nook. I love it. The kindle does have a longer battery life I can drain a battery on mine in a couple days because I like to read alot at night. It has web option I use it when I check facebook or my email when im not home.

If she likes mysteries with a southern twist she needs to read the anne george southern sisters series. well worth it.
