What do you recommend to clean the galvanized surfaces of the inside of the machine? Mine is somwhat chalky, as well as just dirty. Steel wool? Soap and water? Thanks - Ace

I saw cleaning tips on the 4th page of this discussion forum. They said to use TSP which is used by painters.

I just got done cleaning out my VMC117 after it had been sitting idle in a barn hosting a family of mice for a bunch of years. I used Simple Green to cut all of the dirt on all surfaces. I'd estimate that the dirt and grime inside was about 1/8" to 1/4" thick. I would also have to say with some confidence that it had never been cleaned during it's service life.
For all of the galvanized surfaces I used C.L.R. I used a 30 gallon trash can filled with hot water using a 1 to 8 ratio of C.L.R. to water. The bottle recommends that you only let it soak for 2 mins or possible damage may occur. Well....I ended up checking it after 2 mins and it was working quite well but I figured I'd leave it in for a bit longer. "A Bit Longer" turned into about 2 hours! The particular peice that I was soaking was the Compressor Fan shroud. It was pretty nasty when it began it's soak. I used a stiff bristle brush to agitate the build up and it came right off! I had another garbage can with clean water for the rinse. After all was said and done the shroud looked good as new! For all other "static" or parts that have stay where they are i.e the inside of refrigerated portion. I used a spray bottle filled with C.L.R. and a sponge using the "greenie weenie" side and used another sponge with fresh water to rinse. So, in conclusion, C.L.R. worked great for all galvanized surfaces while Simple Green did a bang up job everywhere else.

Thanks Doc! I don't feel so "weenie-like" now!
