Title: Storage Wars... Anyone watch it
Post by: SIGNGUY on December 16, 2010, 09:37:05 am
Have you guys seen that new show Storage Wars on A&E... Wednesday nights, I think it's the 2nd week of it..
basic premise is these guys are buying Storage containers that people have stopped paying rent on and after 60 days or so , it gets sold..

it's interesting to see what they find in these things... again there is alot of "Staging" and "Drama" that goes with it, but its meant to entertain, and actually is pretty good..

check it out, they replay it all the time on AE i believe, plus you can catch a few episodes on AE Website...http://www.aetv.com/storage-wars/index.jsp

I watched a few episodes of another show about two guys buying storage units. I can't remember what it was called. It was auction something. It was so phony and staged I stopped watching. They would tell you that 80% of the units you buy did not make any money. But every unit they bought had some treasure in it and made them a fortune. They found a Jacobs roundtop fully restored in one unit. The problem I had with this show is that they could open the door stick something in the container close the door and then start filming. I believe that is exactly what they did on this show.

I did record a very strange show and watched 2 episodes last night. It was called Oddities. It about an antique shop that deals is very strange items. Lots of human sculls and bones, stuffed animals of all kinds, medical devices and training items from 18th and 19th century. The clientele of the shop is equally strange. Very very odd show. They put a disclaimer on in the beginning of the show. It states that this show contains very disturbing images and parental discretion is advised. They sold a guy a monkey scull, bought some liquor with snakes in it. This is probable the only show i've seen where the disclaimer is valid. It's unsettling seeing all of this strange stuff.

I saw the first few episodes of Oddities also.. it is definitely a very strange show. The guy that was excited about the straight jacket was equally as disturbing...

I watched a couple of episodes of Storage Wars. What I don't get is why doesn't the owner of the storage unit property get all the stuff inside. He is the one not getting paid - isn't the stuff inside like collateral? I would tend to agree that probably 90% of the units probably don't have anything worth squat inside.

I'll have to check Oddities out. Sounds like a show that won't make it.
When I was in Italy in 1990, I went to this basement area of a church or something. There were these rooms full of bones from monks arranged in designs. Very strange!
Here is a website I found about it:

When you dont pay your storage unit bill they will put a lock on it to where you cant get your stuff unless you pay the bill. and if you get three months behiend they can sell your stuff to cover thier loss. Its in the contract you sign when you rent' Its a shame to see ppl loose thier stuff it makes you wonder did this person die and the family didnt care about the stuff and let it go. when my dad passed he had a storage unit so I made shure to pay the bill till I could empty it if I hadnt some lucky person would have ended up with an all original 71 corvette. I do watch the show and its not too bad but they deff dont show the crappy units that are purchased thats tv. I take it with a grain of salt.

Oddities..............hmm. I remember years ago in Chicago, me and a buddy from Minn. sold some things to a guy from ZZ Top. Won't mention his name here. He bought skulls, old caskets, etc. we sold him a truck load of stuff. To each thier own I guess.

I guess it's not all that different from  collecting pop machines, jukes gumball machines. phones, etc.
People collect what they enjoy, I'm sure some skull collector wouldn't understand my fascination with a V81

What does it tell you when t.v networks run promos that say things like "this is the hottest Storage auction show on tv"???  Thats there is too many storage locker shows...  Not to mention the 2 or 3 other Pawn Shop shows and the Aucton House in Atlanta with its own reality series...  So whats next Estate Sale Kings, or American Garage Salers?  At least Antique's Roadshow is still keeping real....  Sadly I have seen all these shows as there isn't anything else to watch on tv half the time...  Which even if you can't find something to watch the cable company still sends me the full bill...  Might be cheaper to have a tv I put quarters in to watch like they used to have at the airport...

it's really amazing what's on tv these days, I saw this the other night and I'm pretty sure it's staged.

I saw an American Pickers show where they purchased a Creature from the Black Lagoon figure. They then showed them calling back to the shop and talking to the tatoo girl. I could see the creature from the Black Lagoon figure behind her. All of these shows are staged some what. Some are just plain phony.
