Title: HOT NEWS !! New Show :) :)
Post by: Funtronics on September 22, 2010, 05:46:12 am
Here it is guys. Just found out from Rick Dale that his new show "Rusty Nuts" will premier Oct 18th at 9:00 on History Channel. We should start seeing it advertised soon. This will be a great show, and hopefully will put collectables back in the spotlight.  :happydrinkers:

I hope he has a variety of items on his show. Thats probably the main reason I watch pawn stars, to see some of the odd ball stuff people bring in.  I am still waiting for someone to bring in a vmc 81 bireleys, or orange crush. I want to hear what they say on the show ultra rare or fantasy???

I just signed up for Netflix On Demand on my Son's Nintendo WII. It is the greatest thing ever. Since have been overseas for the past several years I have missed pawn Stars but they have season 1 and 2 on Netflix on demand. I have spent the past few days watching all of the shows. They used Rick Dale quite a lot. I hope he took acting lessons before staring his own show :)The only think I don't understand is how or why they have him quote so low for his restorations. Such as they brought in an old early 1900's industrial coffee grinder that they media blasted, totally disassembled it powdercoated it and then hand lettered all of the embossing which was a lot. He did all of this for $350!!!

He also restored a Seeburg 147 trashcan from top to bottom and did a great job and he quoted them in the $2500 range! That is nothing for a complete rebuild including the amp, receiver, mech, all of the wood some plastics, new chrome and everything. It would cost more than that just in matterials.

So what I am getting at is if they say the cost is less than it really does cost for the restoration it could really hurt the hobby rather than help. I hope that doesn't happen.

I was in Vegas last weekend and made the trip to the PawnStars store and out to Rick's place. I was surprised at how small the Pawnshop was and how many people were in the store, including a waiting line to get in. My favorite thing was the superbowl ring that was in the case. The Pawnshop did have a few machines for sale. Vendo 110 dp- around ($4900, I think) and a Vmc 33 ($5500) and not very nice.

At Rick's place, we got a quick tour of all the shop areas and his showroom. He has a lot of room to do what he does and he has six people working for him. The were actually filming while I was there (in a different area) and his wife (I think) gave us the tour and explained how every thing worked. She was very pleasant and helpful. There was a great variety of stuff that he had restored out there : golf cart, safe, soda machines, signs, gas pumps, etc.

She mentioned that the show had filmed six, one hour long episodes and that they would probably be broken up into 30 minute shows. I was still surprised at how much stuff was out there, not counting what I call the graveyard (huge field of old soda machines). Even with six people helping out and the family helping out, there was still a lot of work out there. He must be doing something right to get that much work. I looked inside a few of the completed machines and the only thing that surprised me was that the inside was hammertoned. I thought he would have used powdercoating more.

Also, she said the do their own hand lettering, etc. The safe that they had out there and will be in one of the episodes looked very nice!

I was not originally a fan after watching the Pawnstars episode where the Vendo 39 turned into a Cavalier 72... but after seeing how much work is out there and knowing that reality shows are about everything except reality, I have a much higher opinion of him and his work. I know that one of the people here has had a bad experience with an item they sold to him , but I understand after seeing how much he has going on. It made my Vegas trip more interesting and I probably saved money because I wasn't at the card table...and the best part was that my wife even enjoyed going out to the Pawnshop and Rick's place.

Should be interesting.

Josh,

The episode you are referring where he did the Trashcan wasn't a full restoration. He restored it on the outside only (cosmetically). He even said in the show that he left the interior completely the same except for cleaning the mech and the inside. If you don't do it yourself, you can get the amp re-capped for under $200.

I also want to clear something up. I was the one that had a problem with him. Since the problem started he has made everything better and all is well. I am still waiting for him to pick it up but he paid me for storage and he explained that he asked for it to be picked up weeks ago and it is in the hands of his shipper. I would sell to him again if I had the chance. He has helped out quite a bit and has been friendly ever since in emails.

I guess they didn't allow you to take any pics - huh?
Was the DP 110 original or restored?

It looked like a poor attempt at a restoration from maybe 10 yrs ago and it had the stainless molding on it...

I didn't see any signs about photos, but I was in there with about 120 other people and it didn't occur to me...I couldn't believe how many people were in this little shop.

I agree I was there in July, The shop looks huge on tv , but it is tiny.  The machines both looked like amateur resto jobs.  and 5500. for a 33 wow

They say the camera adds 10 feet (or is it 10 pounds).  :tounge:
Outrageous prices for sure - didn't someone say a while back that the shop in Caesars Palace had some crappy restos that they were selling for unreal amounts.

yeah i commented on that too.. I was out there 2 years ago and stopped in there, Cool looking store, easy to get sucked into, but unreal prices for machines that looked like my kid restored them.. I don't even think the machines where taken apart, just repainted, there was overspray on the old crusty origianal door gaskets, Handles, and coin door locking clasps where painted over, Insides where all spray bombed with silver paint. not even a nice hammertone job, just to recolor it and hide the rust.. Logos where hand painted , but again my 9 year has more artistic skill... not sure if they where ricks, or where they where done, but poor and expensive, like 9500 for this V81a!!!

Here is a clip from the Pawn Stars series that I missed. I really wanted to see it because so many of my customers commented on what a beautiful job he did on that old Coke machine.
I know Rick didn't try and decieve anyone, but I wish the producers were a little more truthful.
Hope the new show is more realistic.

Nor have I, but Ricks' web site  mentioned the move daye also has been changed to  10/25.  It  sounds that, since it is mentioned it will air  9:00 pm Eastern  mondays that it will rpelace American Pickers
at least for a bit.
